Justifiability Of Littering: An Empirical Investigation, Benno Torgler, María A. García-Valiñas, Alison Macintyre Sep 2008

Justifiability Of Littering: An Empirical Investigation, Benno Torgler, María A. García-Valiñas, Alison Macintyre

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper investigates the relationship between environmental participation and littering. Previous empirical work in the area of littering is scarce as is evidence regarding the determinants of littering behavior. We address these deficiencies, demonstrating a strong empirical link between environmental participation and reduced public littering using European Values Survey (EVS) data for 30 Western and Eastern European countries. The results suggest that membership in environmental organizations strengthens commitment to anti-littering behaviour, thereby supporting improved environmental quality.

Rotational Grazing Adoption In Cattle Production Under A Cost-Share Agreement: Does Uncertainty Have A Role In Conservation Technology Adoption?, Seon Ae Kim, Jeffrey M. Gillespie, Krishna P. Paudel Sep 2008

Rotational Grazing Adoption In Cattle Production Under A Cost-Share Agreement: Does Uncertainty Have A Role In Conservation Technology Adoption?, Seon Ae Kim, Jeffrey M. Gillespie, Krishna P. Paudel

Faculty Publications

Rotational grazing has been promoted as a best management practice with environmental benefits and associated higher revenue. Its adoption rate has been relatively low. This study investigates the role of uncertainty in the adoption of rotational grazing with a cost-share by cattle producers. Mail survey results indicate that 63-71 per cent of cattle producers are uncertain about adoption with a government cost-share. The study suggests that the possibility of uncertainty should be considered in cases where willingness-to-pay is elicited in the context of adoption of technology. © Journal compilation © 2008 Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society Inc. and Blackwell …

Interneuron Subtypes Are Differentially Altered In Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Amanda George Sep 2008

Interneuron Subtypes Are Differentially Altered In Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Amanda George

Theses and Dissertations

The propensity for seizures in patients with epilepsy is due to underlying cortical hyperexcitability, the mechanisms of which are poorly understood. Particularly difficult to treat are patients with developmental malformations of cortex. Using the freeze-lesion rat model of one such malformation, polymicrogyria, we identified, in lesioned cortex, alterations in specific interneuron subpopulations that may promote hyperexcitability. Previous studies demonstrate increased excitatory input to the paramicrogyral region. An increase in the frequency of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) recorded from pyramidal cells has also been shown. We report an increase in sEPSCs recorded from one subtype of interneuron, the low threshold-spiking …

Altered Vascular Function In A Rat Model Of Reduced Utero -Placental Perfusion., Cindy M. Anderson Sep 2008

Altered Vascular Function In A Rat Model Of Reduced Utero -Placental Perfusion., Cindy M. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to characterize vascular responsiveness and leptin signaling in small mesenteric and uterine arcuate arteries in a rat model of reduced uterine perfusion pressure. The reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) model was utilized to mimic the underlying pathology of preeclampsia. The uterine arteries and abdominal aortae of pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were surgically constricted on day 14 of gestation. Systolic blood pressure measurements were obtained before and during pregnancy using a tail cuff measuring system. Weight was measured with each blood pressure evaluation. The rats were euthanized on gestational day 20. Fetal number, fetal weight and placental …

Unforeseen Misuses Of Bed Nets In Fishing Villages Along Lake Victoria, Noboru Minakawa, Gabriel O. Dida, Gorge O. Sonye, Kyoko Futami, Satoshi Kaneko Sep 2008

Unforeseen Misuses Of Bed Nets In Fishing Villages Along Lake Victoria, Noboru Minakawa, Gabriel O. Dida, Gorge O. Sonye, Kyoko Futami, Satoshi Kaneko

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background. To combat malaria, the Kenya Ministry of Health and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have distributed insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for use over beds, with coverage for children under five years of age increasing rapidly. Nevertheless, residents of fishing villages have started to use these bed nets for drying fish and fishing in Lake Victoria. This study investigated the extent of bed net misuse in fishing villages. Methods. Seven fishing villages along the lake were surveyed to estimate how widely bed nets were being used for fishing and drying fish. Villagers were asked why they used the bed nets for such purposes. …

Experimental Polychondritis: Induced Vs. Spontaneous., Jennifer L. Lamoureux Sep 2008

Experimental Polychondritis: Induced Vs. Spontaneous., Jennifer L. Lamoureux

Theses and Dissertations

We demonstrate evidence supporting two independent hypotheses related to experimental polychondritis: (1) co-expression of a “nonpathogenic” HLA-DQ allele with a “pathogenic” allele results in enhanced susceptibility to disease; and (2) age related immunological changes allow for the spontaneous onset of disease. Relapsing polychondritis (RP), a human autoimmune disease of unknown etiology in which cartilaginous sites are destroyed by cyclic inflammatory episodes, occurs most commonly during middle age. Collagen-induced polychondritis (CIP) develops in heterologous type II collagen (CII) immunized young (6–8 wk old) mice expressing HLA-DQ6α8β transgenes (tg) regardless of gender, and mirrors clinical RP. Although both DQ6αβ8αβ tg and DQ6α8β …

How Movement Properties Affect Prey Encounter Rates Of Ambush Versus Active Predators: A Comment On Scharf Et Al, Tal Avgar, Nir Horvitz, Luba Broitman, Ran Nathan Sep 2008

How Movement Properties Affect Prey Encounter Rates Of Ambush Versus Active Predators: A Comment On Scharf Et Al, Tal Avgar, Nir Horvitz, Luba Broitman, Ran Nathan

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Using an individual‐based model, Scharf and coworkers showed that ambush predators may encounter prey more frequently than active predators. We show that this surprising result emerges because active predators were oblivious to prey during movement, an assumption that refutes the common conception about active foraging and lessens the key difference between these foraging modes. A revised model confirms that active predators always encounter prey more frequently, unequivocally supporting the authors’ conclusion that the advantage of active predators diminishes as prey moves faster or more directionally. We suggest that movement‐dependent perception quality can determine the relative efficiency of these two foraging …
