Phosphorylation Of P27kip1 Regulates Assembly And Activation Of Cyclin D1-Cdk4, Michelle D. Larrea, Jiyong Liang, Thiago G. Da Silva, Feng Hong, Shan H. Shao, Kathy Han, D. Dumont, Joyce M. Slingerland

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

p27 mediates Cdk2 inhibition and is also found in cyclin D1-Cdk4 complexes. The present data support a role for p27 in the assembly of D-type cyclin-Cdk complexes and indicate that both cyclin D1-Cdk4-p27 assembly and kinase activation are regulated by p27 phosphorylation. Prior work showed that p27 can be phosphorylated by protein kinase B/Akt (PKB/Akt) at T157 and T198. Here we show that PKB activation and the appearance of p27pT157 and p27pT198 precede p27-cyclin D1-Cdk4 assembly in early G1. PI3K/PKB inhibition rapidly reduced p27pT157 and p27pT198 and dissociated cellular p27-cyclin D1-Cdk4. Mutant p27 allele products lacking phosphorylation at …

A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones Oct 2008

A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones

Communications Faculty Scholarship

Communitarians have criticized liberals for being too focused on individual rights and responsibilities. But not many scholars have raised this criticism in the area of self-help rhetoric. To address this void, this essay formulates a communitarian critique of the rhetorical devices Dr. Phil uses to counsel guests on his television program. Many scholars have published insightful work on the communitarian/liberalism debate. This paper extends that debate by providing a moral critique of the rhetoric espoused in this popular form of self-help entertainment. Dr. Phil's persuasive appeals to his guests reveal how notions of individualism appear during the show's dialogue.

Portsmouth Vernal Pool Inventory, West Environmental Inc. Oct 2008

Portsmouth Vernal Pool Inventory, West Environmental Inc.

PREP Reports & Publications

West Environmental, Inc. (WEI) conducted a city-wide Vernal Pool Inventory to locate, document and map vernal pools in Portsmouth. This effort was coordinated with the Portsmouth Planning Department and Conservation Commission to help the City of Portsmouth in vernal pool identification and mapping. The goal of this project was to locate isolated wetlands that provide vernal pool habitat. Currently the City of Portsmouth’s wetland regulations exempt wetlands less than 5,000 square feet from the local 100’ buffer zone. This study identified smaller wetlands which have the potential to provide vernal pool habitat that may deserve the 100 foot buffer protection. …

Got Controversy - Milk Does, Margaret Sova Mccabe Oct 2008

Got Controversy - Milk Does, Margaret Sova Mccabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article analyzes ongoing controversy over how to best label rBST-free milk. Recombinant bovine somatotropin is a genetically engineered drug administered by some farmers to their dairy herds to increase milk production. FDA first approved its use in 1994, despite great controversy. The FDA also issued labeling guidelines that allowed voluntary disclosure of rBST-free milk, so long as it carried the disclaimer that no difference could be detected between milk produced with rBST and rBST-free. The controversy continues today as consumers express a preference for rBST-free milk and many rBST-free producers label their milk this way. "Conventional" milk (with rBST) …

Extralegal Practices Of Afghan Refugees In Iran: Exploring Feminist Transnationalism And Immigration Theories, Shahin Gerami Oct 2008

Extralegal Practices Of Afghan Refugees In Iran: Exploring Feminist Transnationalism And Immigration Theories, Shahin Gerami

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

A growing trend in population movement is transnationalism in which immigrants move between communities in host and home countries. Most research on transnationalists has focused on affluent immigrants engaging in global economy from the above and in the North. Transnational feminist narrative of agency allows that both licit and illegal activities practiced by marginalized communities of the South make a significant contribution to the global economy from below. A case study of Afghan refugee families in Iran revealed that their movement into Iran, another less developed country, resembles the immigration and integration of ethnic workers into advanced industrial countries. Their …

Supporting Children's Participation In Second Language Stories In An Irish Language Preschool, Maire Mhic Mhathuna

Articles

This paper considers how children learning a second language were supported as active participants during storytelling sessions in an Irish-language immersion preschool in Dublin. Audio-recordings and observations were made of the story sessions once a fortnight over a period of six months. The resulting transcripts were analysed from an interactionist perspective, recognising both the cognitive and social aspects of the process. The staff were also interviewed and a questionnaire was completed by the parents. The analysis showed that the practitioners provided support for the children through dynamic repeated readings of target books, scaffolded interactions, sufficient experience of storybook reading and …

Signs Of The Times: How The Recent Texas Legislation Regarding Homeowners’ Associations Deprives Homeowners Of Their Fundamental Free Speech Rights, Sharon Kolbet Oct 2008

Signs Of The Times: How The Recent Texas Legislation Regarding Homeowners’ Associations Deprives Homeowners Of Their Fundamental Free Speech Rights, Sharon Kolbet

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Homeowners in Texas may be surprised to learn that recent changes in the Texas Property Code may have effectively deprived them of rights that many citizens would have considered unalienable. As many Texas cities struggle to keep up with the costs associated with suburban sprawl, these cities are finding it difficult to provide new neighborhoods with essential services such as water, sewer, and trash removal. To help their bottom line, many Texas cities have transferred these responsibilities to homeowners' associations (HOAs). However, in doing so cities have inadvertently created vast patchworks of privately owned neighborhoods where many constitutional rights have …

Property Rights In Virtual Reality: All’S Fair In Life And Warcraft?, Sharon K. Lowry

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

To explore these issues, this Comment will first give some background on the rise and explosive growth of virtual worlds. The focus of the first section will be on the development-and especially the economics-of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), in which millions of subscribers interact with each other via the Internet to accomplish tasks or to engage in commerce or other activities. After a general tour of MMORPGs, the Comment will concentrate on the world of Second Life. Second Life is unusual among MMORPGs in that it is totally free-form, with no goals or quests or prizes to win. …
