Consumer Protection In The Americas: A Second Wave Of American Revolutions?, Antonio F. Perez Jan 2008

Consumer Protection In The Americas: A Second Wave Of American Revolutions?, Antonio F. Perez

Scholarly Articles

This article, which draws on the author's experience as a member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee of the Organization of American States, focuses on the problem of crafting an appropriate hemispheric regime for the protection of consumer rights. The subject is now a major element in the agenda of the OAS Specialized Conference on Private International Law (know also under its Spanish acronym as the CIDIP process), in part because of the increased salience of the issue in light of increasing e-commerce. The article, based on the author's presentation at a symposium at the St. Thomas School of Law in …

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Among the varied adaptations for avian flight, the morphological traits allowing large-bodied albatrosses to capitalize on wind and wave energy for efficient long-distance flight are unparalleled. Consequently, the biogeographic distribution of most albatrosses is limited to the windiest oceanic regions on earth; however, exceptions exist. Species breeding in the North and Central Pacific Ocean (Phoebastria spp.) inhabit regions of lower wind speed and wave height than southern hemisphere genera, and have large intrageneric variation in body size and aerodynamic performance. Here, we test the hypothesis that regional wind and wave regimes explain observed differences in Phoebastria albatross morphology and we …

Diet Of Western Slimy Salamander, Plethodon Albagula (Caudata: Plethodontidae), From Two Mountain Ranges In Arkansas, Joseph Milanovich, Stanley E. Trauth, Tanja Mckay

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We identified stomach contents of 80 Plethodon albagula (Western Slimy Salamander) from two mountain ranges in Arkansas (Ozark and Ouachita) to examine if regional differences in diet occur. Museum specimens from 1985 to 2005 were used from locations throughout each mountain range. Although a wide variety of prey were found in stomachs, Hymenoptera: Formicidae and Coleoptera: Carabidae were found to be the most important food items in the diet of P. albagula. Ants and beetles constituted 85% abundance of their total diet (79.6% Ozark and 90.1% Ouachita) and 52.2% of their total biomass (42.6% Ozark and 64.1% Ouachita). Seventy-eight and …

Selective Gene Expression By Postnatal Electroporation During Olfactory Interneuron Nurogenesis, Alexander T. Chesler, Claire E. Le Pichon, Jessica H. Brann, Ricardo C. Araneda

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Neurogenesis persists in the olfactory system throughout life. The mechanisms of how new neurons are generated, how they integrate into circuits, and their role in coding remain mysteries. Here we report a technique that will greatly facilitate research into these questions. We found that electroporation can be used to robustly and selectively label progenitors in the Subventicular Zone. The approach was performed postnatally, without surgery, and with near 100% success rates. Labeling was found in all classes of interneurons in the olfactory bulb, persisted to adulthood and had no adverse effects. The broad utility of electroporation was demonstrated by encoding …

A Framework For Social Responsible Retailing (Srr) Business Practices, Thomas G. Brashear, Anthony K. Asare, Lauren Labrecque, Paulo Cesar Motta

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The role of retailers in the practice of social responsible initiatives has been overlooked in the literature. This paper develops a framework for analysis of Social Responsible Retailing (SRR) by focusing on retailing business practices across the supply chain to the end consumer and among the internal and external stakeholders of the retail landscape. The framework is presented as a starting point to develop the concept of SRR and focuses on the potential role retailers can play in developing and coordinating social responsible business practices

Purpose Machines, Douglas Edric Stanley Jan 2008

Purpose Machines, Douglas Edric Stanley

SWITCH

This article explores how machines can be designed to have purpose - not just to follow instructions, but to react, adapt, and change based on their environment. The author compares early ideas from cybernetics and computer science with modern technologies, showing how machines today can be flexible, creative, and open-ended. He also questions the idea that artists can “re-purpose” machines, since machines are already made to be re-used.

Dissolution Of Aerosol Iron In Sea Water Using Flow-Injection With Chemiluminescence Detection, Marie Josiane Mireille Seguret Jan 2008

Dissolution Of Aerosol Iron In Sea Water Using Flow-Injection With Chemiluminescence Detection, Marie Josiane Mireille Seguret

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Iron is an essential micronutrient for the metabolism of marine organisms and impacts on primary productivity and hence indirectly on climate change. The dominant source of iron to the sea surface in open ocean regions is from the atmosphere by aeolian dust transport but the solubility of iron from dust is poorly constrained. In this thesis, chemical and physical factors impacting on the process of dust dissolution and iron release in seawater were investigated using FI-CL detection. A manual FI manifold was automated and optimised for the determination of iron, at nanomolar concentrations, released from aerosols in seawater. The limit …

The Relationship Between Physical Activity, Motor Competence And Health-Related Fitness In 14-Year-Old Adolescents, Beth P. Hands, Dawne Larkin, Helen Parker, Leon Straker, Mark Perry Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Physical Activity, Motor Competence And Health-Related Fitness In 14-Year-Old Adolescents, Beth P. Hands, Dawne Larkin, Helen Parker, Leon Straker, Mark Perry

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Physical activity, physical fitness, and motor competence are important health-related constructs. However, the relationship between them, particularly among children and adolescents, is still unclear. In this study, motor competence (measured by the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development), pedometer-determined physical activity and physical fitness (aerobic fitness, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility and body composition) were examined in a cohort of 1585 adolescents (771 girls, 814 boys) of mean age 14.1 yrs. Significant gender differences were observed for all measures except motor competence. Apart from hip and shoulder flexibility, males outperformed females. For both males and females, motor competence was associated with …

Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain – Sub-Groups Or A Single Mechanism?, Benedict M. Wand, Neil E. O'Connell Jan 2008

Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain – Sub-Groups Or A Single Mechanism?, Benedict M. Wand, Neil E. O'Connell

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Low back pain is a substantial health problem and has subsequently attracted a considerable amount of research. Clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of a variety of interventions for chronic non-specific low back pain indicate limited effectiveness for most commonly applied interventions and approaches.

Many clinicians challenge the results of clinical trials as they feel that this lack of effectiveness is at odds with their clinical experience of managing patients with back pain. A common explanation for this discrepancy is the perceived heterogeneity of patients with chronic non-specific low back pain. It is felt that the effects of treatment may be …

In The Spirit Of Ubuntu: Enforcing The Rights Of Orphans And Vulnerable Children Affected By Hiv/Aids In South Africa, John Bessler

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article discusses the traditional African concept of ubuntu, which is frequently cited in South African jurisprudence, and analyzes South Africa's lack of compliance with the human rights of orphans and vulnerable children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa explicitly protects children's rights and various socio-economic rights of concern to children, and the Constitutional Court of South Africa has held such rights to be justiciable. The constitutional rights of South African children affected by HIV/AIDS, however, have been continually violated. This Article discusses how the existence of these constitutional rights may …

The Phaeodactylum Genome Reveals The Evolutionary History Of Diatom Genomes, Chris Bowler, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Et Al Jan 2008

The Phaeodactylum Genome Reveals The Evolutionary History Of Diatom Genomes, Chris Bowler, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Et Al

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Diatoms are photosynthetic secondary endosymbionts found throughout marine and freshwater environments, and are believed to be responsible for around one-fifth of the primary productivity on Earth1,2. The genome sequence of the marine centric diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana was recently reported, revealing a wealth of information about diatom biology3,4,5. Here we report the complete genome sequence of the pennate diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and compare it with that of T. pseudonana to clarify evolutionary origins, functional significance and ubiquity of these features throughout diatoms. In spite of the fact that the pennate and centric lineages have only been diverging …

Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke Jan 2008

Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The thesis investigates principles of self-organization that may account for the observed structure and behaviour of neural networks that generate locomotor behaviour and complex spatiotemporal patterns such as spiral waves, metastable states and persistent activity. This relates to the general neuroscience problem of finding the correspondence between the structure of neural networks and their function. This question is both extremely important and difficult to answer because the structure of a neural network defines a specific type of neural dynamics which underpins some function of the neural system and also influences the structure and parameters of the network including connection strengths. …

Biodiversity And Ecosystem Processes In The Strandline: The Role Of Species Identity, Diversity, Interactions And Body Size, Sally Jane Marsh Jan 2008

Biodiversity And Ecosystem Processes In The Strandline: The Role Of Species Identity, Diversity, Interactions And Body Size, Sally Jane Marsh

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

In the current climate of biodiversity loss how species diversity and ecosystem process are linked is, arguably, one of the most pressing issues and greatest challenges currently facing the scientific community. Previous studies suggest that there is no universal trajectory for the relationship between diversity and ecosystem processes, the pattern depends largely on species identity and their interactions. Furthermore, the effect of reduced diversity on ecosystem process in multi-trophic assemblages is both understudied and poorly understood. Consequently, the overall aim of the present study was to investigate the role of species identity, diversity and interactions in determining ecosystem processes using …

Mathematical Modelling Of Hepatopancreatic Digestive Cell Of The Blue Mussel, Allan Mcveigh Jan 2008

Mathematical Modelling Of Hepatopancreatic Digestive Cell Of The Blue Mussel, Allan Mcveigh

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The lysosomal system of the hepatopancreatic digestive cell of the mussel (Mytilus sp.) is critical in intracellular food degradation, toxic responses and internal cellular turnover. Mathematical and numerical models are developed to simulate the responses of this system to varying conditions, dietary and toxicological. The model evolution encompasses: inclusion of glycogen/lipid storage forms; extrapolation to include nitrogen metabolism; development of rate of endocytosis and food signal; increased functionality of endo/lysosomes; shift to protein/carbohydrate/lipid based model; and the incorporation of the cost of normal Sanction and replacement of damaged components. Control is asserted through control of cytosolic concentrations: the intial assumption …

Predation By Crabs On Rocky Shores In North-East Atlantic, Ana Catarina Ferreira Da Silva Jan 2008

Predation By Crabs On Rocky Shores In North-East Atlantic, Ana Catarina Ferreira Da Silva

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Highly mobile predators are known to have an important influence on shallow-water habitats. There is, however, little information about the role of crabs on the ecology of rocky shores. Here I examine the extent and consequences of predation by crabs on shores in the North-East Atlantic. The specific aims of this thesis are to: investigate spatial variation in use of the intertidal by crabs along a horizontal gradient of exposure to wave action and a vertical gradient of tidal elevation; assess their use of the intertidal as a feeding area by examining stomach content composition; examine the extent of connectivity …

Computational And Psycho-Physiological Investigations Of Musical Emotions, Eduardo Coutinho Jan 2008

Computational And Psycho-Physiological Investigations Of Musical Emotions, Eduardo Coutinho

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The ability of music to stir human emotions is a well known fact (Gabrielsson & Lindstrom. 2001). However, the manner in which music contributes to those experiences remains obscured. One of the main reasons is the large number of syndromes that characterise emotional experiences. Another is their subjective nature: musical emotions can be affected by memories, individual preferences and attitudes, among other factors (Scherer & Zentner, 2001). But can the same music induce similar affective experiences in all listeners, somehow independently of acculturation or personal bias? A considerable corpus of literature has consistently reported that listeners agree rather strongly about …

Stewards Of The Earth? : A Study Of Teenagers' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Lifestyles In Devon, Uk And Malaga, Spain, Jennie Winter

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Individual responses to sustainability are recognised as fundamental to progressing the sustainable development agenda. In order to raise awareness and support for sustainability, concerted programmes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) have been promoted and ESD is now a core element of educational curricula in many countries, particularly in the developed world. One group of particular interest to educators and policy makers is teenagers. Their engagement with sustainability issues, both in rhetorical and participatory terms, is considered essential to both the short and long term infusion of sustainability into public consciousness. However, despite continuing endeavours to involve teenagers in the …
