The Public Domain: Enclosing The Commons Of The Mind, James Boyle Jan 2008

The Public Domain: Enclosing The Commons Of The Mind, James Boyle

Faculty Scholarship

Our music, our culture, our science and our economic welfare all depend on a delicate balance between those ideas that are controlled and those that are free, between intellectual property and the public domain. In his award-winning book, The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind (Yale University Press) James Boyle introduces readers to the idea of the public domain and describes how it is being tragically eroded by our current copyright, patent, and trademark laws. In a series of fascinating case studies, Boyle explains why gene sequences, basic business ideas and pairs of musical notes are now owned, …

A Construct With Fluorescent Indicators For Conditional Expression Of Mirna., Linghua Qiu, Hongyan Wang, Xugang Xia, Hongxia Zhou, Zuoshang Xu

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Transgenic RNAi holds promise as a simple, low-cost, and fast method for reverse genetics in mammals. It may be particularly useful for producing animal models for hypomorphic gene function. Inducible RNAi that permits spatially and temporally controllable gene silencing in vivo will enhance the power of transgenic RNAi approach. Furthermore, because microRNA (miRNA) targeting specific genes can be expressed simultaneously with protein coding genes, incorporation of fluorescent marker proteins can simplify the screening and analysis of transgenic RNAi animals. RESULTS: We sought to optimally express a miRNA simultaneously with a fluorescent marker. We compared two construct designs. One expressed …

Noncontingent Reinforcement As Treatment Fortub-Standing In A Toddler, R. D. Ward, Thomas S. Higbee Jan 2008

Noncontingent Reinforcement As Treatment Fortub-Standing In A Toddler, R. D. Ward, Thomas S. Higbee

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The present case study investigated whether the tub-standing of a typicallydeveloping toddler could be reduced by a noncontingent reinforcement procedure. The results of a brief functional analysis suggested that tub-standing was maintained by automatic reinforcement. Noncontingent reinforcement, consisting of presentation of bath toys on a fixed-time schedule, was effective in reducing the number of tub-stands per session. These results suggest that noncontingent reinforcement can be successfully applied to problem behavior in typically-developing children in naturalistic settings.

Human Identity: The Question Presented By Human-Animal Hybridization, Jospeh Vining Jan 2008

Human Identity: The Question Presented By Human-Animal Hybridization, Jospeh Vining

Other Publications

What makes each of us, as individuals, human to one another, or, more generally, what makes an individual creature human? We have not often had to ask the question because of the species line based on reproductive capacity and incapacity, although "degrees of humanness" were explored in the various eugenic programs of the last century. Now the biotechnological possibility of fusing human and other forms of life is presenting the question in a new and serious way. If the traditional biological means of defining species are no longer reliable, what other criteria might determine what is "human" and what is …

Today the Earth faces an extinction event on a scale second only to Earth's largest mass extinction, the Permian-Triassic event, which occurred 250 million years ago. Upwards of 70 percent of the Earth's species could be at risk of extinction with a 3.5°C (6.3°F) rise in temperature, which could occur by the end of this century.

The driver is global warming, caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As such, a rational climate policy is needed immediately to prevent the complete collapse of biodiversity. Yet, the United States—the world's largest cumulative contributor to emissions—is in a state of paralysis when it …

Effects And Mechanisms Of Female Sex Hormone Influence On Skeletal Muscle Inflammation, Sobia Iqbal Jan 2008

Effects And Mechanisms Of Female Sex Hormone Influence On Skeletal Muscle Inflammation, Sobia Iqbal

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous work from our laboratory has demonstrated that estrogen will attenuate leukocyte infiltration into skeletal muscle following eccentric exercise. However the mechanisms by which estrogen exerts its effects are still uncertain. In experiment one, we investigated the role of estrogen receptor (ER) influence on muscle leukocyte infiltration following eccentric exercise through administration of the ER antagonist ICI 182,780 following downhill running in ovariectomized female rats with (E+) or without (E-) estrogen supplementation. At 24 hours post-exercise, soleus and white vastus muscles were removed and immunostained for HIS48 (neutrophil) and EDI (macrophage) positive cells. The increase in number of fibres positive …

Evolutionary Origins, Diversification, And Biogeography Of Liver Flukes (Digenea, Fasciolidae), Wael M. Lotfy, Sara V. Brant, Randy J. Dejong, Hoa Le Thanh

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Fasciolid flukes are among the largest and best known digenetic trematodes and have considerable historical and veterinary significance. Fasciola hepatica is commonly implicated in causing disease in humans. The origins, patterns of diversification, and biogeography of fasciolids are all poorly known. We have undertaken a molecular phylogenetic study using 28S, internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA, and mitochondrial nicotinamide dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) that included seven of the nine recognized species in the family. The fasciolids examined comprise a monophyletic group with the most basal species recovered from African elephants. We hypothesize fasciolids …

The Effect Of Selective Cholinergic Lesion Of Medial Septum On Recognition Memory, Li Cai Jan 2008

The Effect Of Selective Cholinergic Lesion Of Medial Septum On Recognition Memory, Li Cai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to clarify the role of septal-hippocampal cholinergic neurons in object and spatial recognition memory. Stereotaxic-surgical infusion of the selective cholinergic neurotoxin, 192IgG-saporin (SAP), into the medial septum (MS) of Sprague-Dawley rats was utilized to establish an animal model of cholinergic deficit of the septal-hippocampal tract, which had been expected as a pathologic model of memory impairment for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Three types of recognition memory were examined: retrograde object recognition, anterograde object recognition, and anterograde spatial recognition. These were examined with a modified version of a standard object recognition paradigm. For retrograde memory retention …

Conservation Of Selection On Matk In Ferns Following An Ancient Loss Its Flanking Intron, A. M. Duffy, S. A. Kelchner, Paul G. Wolf Jan 2008

Conservation Of Selection On Matk In Ferns Following An Ancient Loss Its Flanking Intron, A. M. Duffy, S. A. Kelchner, Paul G. Wolf

Biology Faculty Publications

The chloroplast gene trnK and its associated group II intron appear to be absent in a large and ancient clade that includes nearly 90% of fern species. However, the maturase protein encoded within the intron (matK) is still present and located on the boundary of a large-scale inversion. We surveyed the chloroplast genome sequence of clade-member Adiantum capillus-veneris for evidence of a still present but fragmented trnK intron. Lack of signature structural domains and sequence motifs in the genome indicate loss of the trnK intron through degradation in an ancestor of the clade. In plants, matK preferentially catalyzes splicing of …

Quanta V. Lg Electronics: Frustrating Patent Deals By Taking Contracting Options Off The Table?, F. Scott Kieff Jan 2008

Quanta V. Lg Electronics: Frustrating Patent Deals By Taking Contracting Options Off The Table?, F. Scott Kieff

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Supreme Court's unanimous decision in Quanta v. LG Electronics may make it significantly more difficult to structure transactions involving patents. While this decision does make a group of players into winners in the immediate term for existing patent deals (this group includes any customer who, like Quanta, buys patented parts without buying a patent license), almost everyone is likely to come out a loser going forward.

The Court in Quanta decided that a patent license that LG Electronics sold only to Intel - and explicitly limited to exclude Intel's customers, like Quanta, and priced to reflect these modest ambitions …

Effectiveness Of Government Interventions At Inducing Better Environmental Performance: Does Effectiveness Depend On Facility Or Firm Features?, Robert L. Glicksman, Dietrich Earnhart

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Environmental agencies have several options for dealing with alleged noncompliance with environmental regulations. These options include pursuit of administrative or judicial civil penalties and injunctions to prevent future violations. Scholars have begun exploring whether these options induce better performance by regulated entities. This Article addresses a largely neglected question: whether a regulated facility's characteristics affect the efficacy of the different enforcement options. The Article stems from a study of compliance by the chemical industry with federal Clean Water Act permits. It assesses whether facility characteristics, including effluent limit level and type, permit modifications, facility size, capacity utilization, discharge volatility, and …

Sustainable Federal Land Management: Protecting Ecological Integrity And Preserving Environmental Principal, Robert L. Glicksman Jan 2008

Sustainable Federal Land Management: Protecting Ecological Integrity And Preserving Environmental Principal, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article explores the application of the principles of sustainability to management of lands and resources under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. These two agencies operate a mandate to manage the resources under their control to achieve sustained yield. In this context, sustainability has operated to date primarily in an aspirational fashion, as a broad objective of public land management, rather than as a useful management tool or an enforceable constraint on agency management discretion. The article urges the adoption of amendments to the laws under which the Forest Service and the …
