Antimicrobial Peptides For Use In Oyster Aquaculture: Effect On Pathogens, Commensals, And Eukaryotic Expression Systems, Tarquin Dorrington, Marta Gomez-Chiarri
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) of marine origin, tachyplesin from the Japanese horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus, and pleurocidin-amide from the winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, were tested for their potential effectiveness in disease treatment in oyster aquaculture. Tachyplesin had a greater antimicrobial effect than pleurocidin-amideagainst a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, with minimum inhibitor concentrations in the range of 0.625 to 5ug mL–1. Tachyplesin (50 mg mL–1) was also more effective than pleurocidin-amide (250 mg mL–1) against the oyster protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus, reducing its viability to 9% versus 22% in vitro …
Acoustic Conditioning To Reduce The Impact Of Escapement In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Net Pen Aquaculture, Jennifer Andrew
Acoustic Conditioning To Reduce The Impact Of Escapement In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) Net Pen Aquaculture, Jennifer Andrew
Open Access Master's Theses
Net pen culture is the most common method used to raise salmon, however these farms are typically located in areas through which wild salmon inhabit or migrate and escapes may influence wild stocks. Commercial salmon farms can potentially reduce both economic losses to the producer and impacts on wild stocks by recapturing escapees. Acoustic signaling has been used to concentrate fish species for feeding or harvest and to deter fish from specific areas. The present study investigated the approach of conditioning salmon to associate a tone with feeding to entice return to a specific location allowing recapture. The ability of …
Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz
Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz
Master's Theses
The objective of this thesis is to develop a biological wastewater treatment system that utilizes algal growth to simultaneously create renewable energy in the form of biodiesel and digester biogas, remove polluting nutrients, and abate greenhouse gases. Research under the Department of Energy Aquatic Species Program during 1978-1996 concluded that cultivating algae for biofuels was cost prohibitive at that time and that an integrated approach should be studied that combined wastewater treatment with algal biofuel production. Nutrient removal, in particular nitrogen and phosphorus, from wastewater is a growing regulatory need and the use of algae cultivation could create a unique …
Thriving, Coping, Surviving, Hoping: Negotiating The First Year Of Teaching, Debrah Jean Fordice
Thriving, Coping, Surviving, Hoping: Negotiating The First Year Of Teaching, Debrah Jean Fordice
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In this qualitative study, I examined how four teachers negotiated their first year of teaching. All four teachers graduated from the same teacher preparation program, and secured general elementary positions in the same school district where they conducted some or all of their clinical coursework. I explored the factors that shaped the practice of these first-year teachers.
Annie, a 23-year-old, single, female marathon runner, with a vision to work with children in an inner-city setting, secured a position as a first grade teacher at a school where 85% of the children lived in poverty. Rachel, 24 years old, newly-married, and …
Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades
Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades
Publications
Phototransduction is the process by which photons of light generate an electrical response in retinal rod and cone photoreceptors, thereby initiating vision. We compare the electrical response in salamander rods from increasingly more (spacialy) detailed models of phototransduction: 0-dimensional (bulk), 1-dimensional (longitudinal), 2-dimensional (axisymmetric), and 3-dimensional (with incisures). We discuss issues of finding physical parameters for simulation and validation of models, and also present some computational experiments for rods with geometry of mouse and human photoreceptors.

Allergies In University Of Northern Iowa College Students, Lisa Krausman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Allergies diseases, comprising of asthma and allergies, in some direct or indirect way affect most American families as more than 40 to 60 million or one in four Americans suffer from allergic diseases. Allergic diseases are a widespread problem that has a great monetary cost to society and a negative impact on the quality of life for those afflicted. This research was based on an analytical cross-sectional study design with a convenience sample of young adults in a college population. The paper based survey consisted of 55 questions asking various questions throughout various periods of life including the topics of …

When Obscenity Discriminates, Elizabeth M. Glazer
When Obscenity Discriminates, Elizabeth M. Glazer
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
When public indecency statutes outlaw gender nonconformity, obscenity discriminates; when movie ratings censor representations of sexual minorities, obscenity discriminates, and discriminates on the basis of their status as sexual minorities. This Article addresses obscenity doctrine's infliction of first generation, or status discrimination against sexual minorities by conflating "sex" - and the prurient representation of sex that constitutes obscenity - and "sexual orientation." Civil rights lawyers and scholars have turned their attentions away from "first generation" discrimination," where groups experience discrimination on the basis of their status, and toward "second generation" discrimination, where groups experience discrimination for failing to downplay or …

Supposons Que La Discipline Et La Sécurité N'Existent Pas - Rereading Foucault's Collége De France Lectures (With Paul Veyne), Bernard E. Harcourt
Faculty Scholarship
We have come to know well and deploy easily the Foucauldian terms discipline and sécurité (what we now call governmentality), especially as a result of Michel Foucault's 1978 and 1979 lectures at the College de France. What we know less well, I contend, is how to critique them – discipline and sécurité, that is – the way that Foucault critiqued the terms folie, délinquance, or sexualité.
In this essay, I push further my meditations on punishment and subject discipline and sécurité to the same brutal method that Foucault used in his writings on folie, délinquance, and sexualité. I begin by …
On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris
On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work addresses to what extent businesses in the United States and the European Union have a moral obligation to participate in social integration processes in areas where they operate with the use of migrant laborers. It begins with the presupposition that a common framework as to what constitutes ethical behavior in business is needed and beneficial. It argues that the very industry that creates a need for migrant labor ought to also be involved in merging this labor successfully into the existing community and specifies that a discourse on business ethics and migration is gravely needed. This must be …
