Structure Of Soil Arthropod And Plant Communities In Light Gaps And Continuous Forest In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Lauren Breza Nov 2008

Structure Of Soil Arthropod And Plant Communities In Light Gaps And Continuous Forest In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Lauren Breza

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Several studies have confirmed that higher plant community richness facilitates greater arthropod community richness. The purpose of this study is to examine how plant community structure in continuous forest and light gaps impact soil arthropod community structure. In this study plant surveys were conducted for twenty plots, ten located in continuous forest and ten located within a forest gap. Along with plant surveys, a soil sample from each plot was collected in order to obtain soil dwelling arthropods. Arthropods were extracted from the soil first using a Burlese funnel, and then manually picked out of the soil. After all arthropods …

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey Nov 2008

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey

Faculty Works

Interscholastic athletic directors have a tremendous responsibility in guiding athletic programs in today’s ever-changing society. Their decisions on the numerous issues confronting them reflect what they perceive as ethical (Conn & Gerdes, 1998). The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of selected athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex regarding the issues and factors related to the ethical conduct of personnel involved in the directing of interscholastic athletic programs. To accomplish this, the researcher collected qualitative data from eight athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who are responsible for at least three interscholastic athletic programs that …

Focus On Rna Isolation: Obtaining Rna For Microrna (Mirna) Expression Profiling Analyses Of Neural Tissue, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard R. Wilfred, Donald A. Baldwin, R. Benjamin Isett, Na Ren, Arnold J. Stromberg, Peter T. Nelson Nov 2008

Focus On Rna Isolation: Obtaining Rna For Microrna (Mirna) Expression Profiling Analyses Of Neural Tissue, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard R. Wilfred, Donald A. Baldwin, R. Benjamin Isett, Na Ren, Arnold J. Stromberg, Peter T. Nelson

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are present in all known plant and animal tissues and appear to be somewhat concentrated in the mammalian nervous system. Many different miRNA expression profiling platforms have been described. However, relatively little research has been published to establish the importance of 'upstream' variables in RNA isolation for neural miRNA expression profiling. We tested whether apparent changes in miRNA expression profiles may be associated with tissue processing, RNA isolation techniques, or different cell types in the sample. RNA isolation was performed on a single brain sample using eight different RNA isolation methods, and results were correlated using a conventional …

Numerical Simulation Of Local Temperature Distortions During Ice Nucleation Of Cells In Suspension, D. Kandra, R. V. Devireddy Nov 2008

Numerical Simulation Of Local Temperature Distortions During Ice Nucleation Of Cells In Suspension, D. Kandra, R. V. Devireddy

Faculty Publications

Knowledge of intercellular ice formation in cells embedded in an extra-cellular suspension is essential for effective design of freezing protocols. The presence of cell membrane causes super-cooling of the intra-cellular region, which nucleates at much lower temperatures than the surrounding extra-cellular space and is accompanied by the exothermic release of the latent heat. This is a dynamic process and causes thermal distortions in and around the cell where nucleation occurs. In the present study, an attempt has been made to numerically determine the magnitude of thermal distortion (ΔT) and the time (dt) it takes for this distortion to damp out …

Linking Mine Action And Development | Humanitarian And Development Ngos, Gichd Nov 2008

Linking Mine Action And Development | Humanitarian And Development Ngos, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action programmes often are not linked early and strongly enough with key development actors. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. More specifically, the guidelines seek to:

  • Increase awareness that landmines and other remnants of conflict block development in many affected countries
  • Strengthen coordination between mine action and …

Perceptions Of School Superintendents And A Community Task Force Regarding The Health, Pedagogical, Social, And Economic Policy And Planning Decisions For Longterm School Closure Due To Pandemic Influenza-A Multi-Method Approach, David G. Duford

Education Doctoral

The research focused on the impact pandemic influenza could have on K-12 school systems. The research looked at responses of school leaders regarding the pedagogical, community health, social, and economic impacts of a pandemic. During an influenza pandemic school districts may be asked to close for as long as 12 weeks to reduce contact among children and stop the spread of disease. School superintendents' perceptions and attitudes were sought regarding school policy implications associated with long-term closure of K-12 school districts. The research methods used for this study included: (a) electronic survey, (b) face-to-face interviews, and (c) focus group. Information …

Judging National Security Post-9/11: An Empirical Investigation, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2008

Judging National Security Post-9/11: An Empirical Investigation, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Many people believe that when national security is threatened, federal courts should defer to the government. Many other people believe that in times of crisis, citizens are vulnerable to a kind of “panic” that leads to unjustified intrusions on liberty. But to date, there is little information about what federal courts have actually done in this domain, especially in the period after the attacks of September 11, 2001. On the basis of a comprehensive study of relevant courts of appeals decisions in the aftermath of those attacks, this essay offers four findings. First, the invalidation rate is about 15 percent …

Constitutional Afterlife: The Continuing Impact Of Thailand’S Post-Political Constitution, Tom Ginsburg Nov 2008

Constitutional Afterlife: The Continuing Impact Of Thailand’S Post-Political Constitution, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Thailand’s constitution of 1997 introduced profound changes into the country’s governance, creating a “postpolitical” democratic structure in which an intricate array of guardian institutions served to limit the role of elected politicians. Ultimately, the constitutional structure was undermined in a military coup against populist billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, who had taken over many of the institutions designed to constrain political power. Nonetheless, the 1997 constitution appears to be having a significant afterlife, in that its institutional innovations have survived the enactment of a new Constitution and continue to constrain the political process. This article describes the Thai situation and speculates on …

Objective: To assess the short-term hematologic and hemodynamic effects of a comprehensive lymphatic treatment protocol.

Methods: Randomized crossover design that included 10-minute lymphatic treatment and rest (control) protocols delivered 1 week apart for a small pilot group of healthy men (N=15). At baseline, albumin, hematocrit, hemoglobin platelet count, total protein, and white blood cell count were measured, as were systolic and diastolic blood pressure. All measures were repeated 20, 50, and 80 minutes after baseline data were gathered.

Results: Significant condition x time interaction effects were …

Does Repeated Burial Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue (Ovis Aries) In Soil Affect Subsequent Decomposition?, David O. Carter, Mark Tibbett Nov 2008

Does Repeated Burial Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue (Ovis Aries) In Soil Affect Subsequent Decomposition?, David O. Carter, Mark Tibbett

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The repeated introduction of an organic resource to soil can result in its enhanced degradation. This phenomenon is of primary importance in agroecosystems, where the dynamics of repeated nutrient, pesticide, and herbicide amendment must be understood to achieve optimal yield. Although not yet investigated, the repeated introduction of cadaveric material is an important area of research in forensic science and cemetery planning. It is not currently understood what effects the repeated burial of cadaveric material has on cadaver decomposition or soil processes such as carbon mineralization. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a laboratory experiment using ovine ( …

The Effect Of Hummingbird Feeders On The Pollen Loads And Diversity In Nectarivorous Bats (Glossophaginae) In A Tropical Cloud Forest, November 2008, Benjamin Juan Padilla Nov 2008

The Effect Of Hummingbird Feeders On The Pollen Loads And Diversity In Nectarivorous Bats (Glossophaginae) In A Tropical Cloud Forest, November 2008, Benjamin Juan Padilla

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bats are some of the most important pollinators in tropical regions. I studied the effect of hummingbird feeders on pollen loads in nectarivorous bats in the Monteverde region. I mist netted bats at two locations Selvatura Hummingbird Garden (deemed high feeder density), and the Santa Elena Reserve (low feeder density). Pollen was removed from the bat’s back using clear scotch tape and placed directly onto microscope slides for examination. A Shannon-Weiner diversity index showed that there was a difference between the pollen diversities (Selvatura H’=5.47, Reserve H’= 4.63) although mean pollen diversity and overall pollen count were not different. These …

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks Nov 2008

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bat hemoparasite studies have focused on bats as vectors for viruses that cause human diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Henipavirus, while ectoparastite studies have looked at a broad range of ecological and abiotic factors that influence ectoparasite prevalence including age, sex, roosting ecology, and habitat. Yet diet had been largely ignored in both hemoparasite and ectoparasite studies. In this study, I looked at diet as a possible factor in hemoparasite load and also looked at the relationships between hemoparasites, health (with weight as a proxy), and ectoparasites. Four guilds were compared, sanguinivores, omnivores, frugivores, and nectarivores, with an overall …

Thokolosi, Karabo Legwaila Nov 2008

Thokolosi, Karabo Legwaila

Theses

The legend or myth of the malevolent spirit known as Thokolosi has long been known among my people. Some people have even been known to take measures to protect themselves from attacks by Thokolosi by raising their beds on bricks to prevent the spirit attacking them at night. I have always felt that this legend was ripe with possibilities for the animation medium and having loved the idea of Thokolosi, I felt it was a good time to attempt to make a film about it. This was also a way for me to introduce a small piece of my culture …

Foxm1b Transcriptionally Regulates Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression And Promotes The Angiogenesis And Growth Of Glioma Cells, Yujian Zhang, Nu Zhang, Bingbing Dai, Mingguang Liu, Raymond Sawaya, Keping Xie, Suyun Huang Nov 2008

Foxm1b Transcriptionally Regulates Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression And Promotes The Angiogenesis And Growth Of Glioma Cells, Yujian Zhang, Nu Zhang, Bingbing Dai, Mingguang Liu, Raymond Sawaya, Keping Xie, Suyun Huang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We previously found that FoxM1B is overexpressed in human glioblastomas and that forced FoxM1B expression in anaplastic astrocytoma cells leads to the formation of highly angiogenic glioblastoma in nude mice. However, the molecular mechanisms by which FoxM1B enhances glioma angiogenesis are currently unknown. In this study, we found that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a direct transcriptional target of FoxM1B. FoxM1B overexpression increased VEGF expression, whereas blockade of FoxM1 expression suppressed VEGF expression in glioma cells. Transfection of FoxM1 into glioma cells directly activated the VEGF promoter, and inhibition of FoxM1 expression by FoxM1 siRNA suppressed VEGF promoter activation. …
