Through The Wild Cathedral Evening: Barriers, Attitudes, Participatory Democracy, Professor Tenbroek, And The Rights Of Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This article is a commentary on Michael Ashley Stein & Janet Lord, Jacobus TenBroek, Participatory Justice, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, - Tex. J. Civ Lib. & Civ. Rts. - (2008) (in press). In it, I seek to expand their analysis of the new UN Convention on the Rights of Persons withDisabilities in an effort to invigorate an area of institutionalized patients rights law that is now nearly forgotten: the rights of such persons to exercise civil rights while institutionalized. I also argue that Prof. Stein and Ms. Lord's paper should lead us to …

Impact Of Comorbidity In Prevention Of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms., Patrick Pössel, Simone Seemann, Martin Hautzinger Jan 2008

Impact Of Comorbidity In Prevention Of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms., Patrick Pössel, Simone Seemann, Martin Hautzinger

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Despite the well-known relevance of comorbidity, few studies have examined the impact of comorbid anxiety or externalizing symptoms on the prevention of depressive symptoms in adolescents. To replicate earlier positive effects of a cognitive-behavioral prevention program of depressive symptoms and to test the hypothesis that the prevention program would be less effective in adolescents with comorbid anxiety and externalizing symptoms, a study was conducted involving 301 8th-grade students, randomly divided into an intervention group and a non-intervention control group. The randomized design included baseline, post-intervention, and 6-month follow-up. The prevention program included 10 sessions held in a regular school setting. …

What Is The Opposite Of Bullshit? Possibilities Of Intellectual Engagement, Since Sartre: An Interview With Bill Martin - Part 1, Joseph G. Ramsey

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[from Introduction]

Bill Martin is Professor of Philosophy, at DePaul University in Chicago. There, he has been an active supporter of Norman Finkelstein in his widely publicized tenure fight. Martin's work encompasses a wide range of topics from ethics, imperialism, and animal rights, to actually existing revolutionary movements, to philosophies of science and secularism. He engages seriously with figures from Sartre, Lenin, Marx, and Mao, to Plato, Aristotle, Derrida, Kant, Marcuse, Habermas, and Jameson in books including: Matrix and Line: Derrida and the possibilities of postmodern social theory (1992), Politics and the Impasse: Explorations in postsecular social theory (1996), and …

"God Sent Me To Piss The World Off": Eminem, 'Psycho'-Machia, And The Morality Vice, James Keller

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The term psychomachia, drawn from the title of Prudentius' fourth century work, dramatizes the "struggle for the soul of man by the personified forces of good and evil" (Bevington 117). In morality plays such as The Castle of Perseverance (circa 1400-1425), the embodiments of vice and virtue engage in a mock military conflict to win the allegiance of humanity. However, the difficulties of staging mock battles in limited space with a limited cast resulted in the evolution of the psychomachia intrigue plot where the figure of wickedness tempts the representation of humanity to embrace evil and reject …

Using Acidiphilium Acidiphilium To Bioleach Metals From Printed Circuit Boards, Diana Goglia Arora Jan 2008

Using Acidiphilium Acidiphilium To Bioleach Metals From Printed Circuit Boards, Diana Goglia Arora

Open Access Master's Theses

As many as 500 million computers became obsolete between the years of 2000 and 2007 (U.S. EPA, 2007), due in large part to the increasing rate of technological advances. Printed circuit boards (PCB) are the essential components of most electronic waste. Metals that are contained within PCB are potentially hazardous to the environment. These metals include copper, aluminum, chromium, mercury, zinc, lead, and nickel (Li et. al., 2004). If not contained properly, metals can leach into soils and possibly damage the ecosystem. This problem of growing electronic waste not only exists in the USA, but it also extends overseas in …

In Vitro Effects Of Emollient Substances On Release Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Burcak Alioglu Jan 2008

In Vitro Effects Of Emollient Substances On Release Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Burcak Alioglu

Open Access Master's Theses

Ketorolac tromethamine is a non-steroidal drug that has potent analgesic and moderate anti-inflammatory activity. A single dose of ketorolac tromethamine is clinically more effective than that of many drugs in the management of moderate to severe postoperative pain. Transdermal delivery of ketorolac tromethamine seems as a potential method of administration that would be non-invasive and eliminate repeated dosing regimens. Although a transdermal dosage form of ketorolac has not arrived in the market, permeation enhancement of ketorolac tromethamine transdermally and topically has been the subject of several pharmaceutical research studies.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible release …

Shanthi Sena: Unarmed Peacekeeping, Dennis August Almeida Jan 2008

Shanthi Sena: Unarmed Peacekeeping, Dennis August Almeida

Open Access Master's Theses

Where questions of violence and nonviolence cannot be raised inside a polity, it becomes obligatory that social scientists undertake them from the outside (Paige 2002:92). And if we are to "transform our society from a psychology of killing and threats to kill to one that is life-enhancing and spiritually fulfilling," (Ariyaratne 1999:73) then social science research on nonviolence and unarmed peacekeeping is an imperative. With this in mind I investigated the Shanthi Sena (Peace Brigade), an independent unit of the Sarvodaya Sharamadana Movement in Sri Lanka, through a six week in-depth case study; a full description, understanding and appreciation of …

Trans Fatty Acids Provide Evidence Of Anthropogenic Feeding By Black Bears, Gregory W. Thiemann, Randal S. Stahl, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Stewart W. Breck Jan 2008

Trans Fatty Acids Provide Evidence Of Anthropogenic Feeding By Black Bears, Gregory W. Thiemann, Randal S. Stahl, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Stewart W. Breck

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Bears (Ursus spp.) that become conditioned to anthropogenic food sources pose a risk to human safety and generally need to be relocated, rehabilitated, or destroyed. Identifying food-conditioned bears may be difficult if the animal is not captured or killed while immediately engaged in the nuisance behavior. Fatty acid signature analysis has been used to examine the dietary habits of bears and other carnivores and is based on the predictable incorporation of ingested fatty acids into the consumer’s fat stores. Unusual fatty acids that are available in only a few food types may be particularly useful dietary markers. In this …

An Herbal Abc Book: A Contribution To Information Available To Children And Adults, Linda Jo Kirkland Jan 2008

An Herbal Abc Book: A Contribution To Information Available To Children And Adults, Linda Jo Kirkland

Graduate Research Papers

From Neanderthal to New Age times, plant medicine has been shown to be used by people seeking relief from ailments. There is a lack of information available for children to learn about the simple herbal remedies used by their ancestors even though herbal remedies are commonly used in this country. These plant remedies are both culturally and medically significant. People use herbal medicine to a great extent without consulting medical professionals. Therefore, a research based herbal ABC book would be a significant addition to children’s literature in this country, both as information for children and adults, and as a conversation …

Preparing Instructors Of Adult Learners To Address The Needs Of Minority Students, Travell Unique Brock Jan 2008

Preparing Instructors Of Adult Learners To Address The Needs Of Minority Students, Travell Unique Brock

Graduate Research Papers

In predominately Caucasian educational systems, diversity in the classroom is becoming a fast-growing phenomenon. With this new phenomenon, adult instructors now have a new challenge of facilitating learning in an environment where the learners not only have different learning capabilities, but also language and cultural differences. The reviewer answers the following questions: what are the important considerations for instructors to prepare diverse adult learners for corporate work environments, higher education, and K-12 professional development? And what are the appropriate cultural specific media and literature resources to include in training?

The literature collected focused on resources related to teaching adult minority …

Technology Integration Within The Elementary Classroom Setting, Krista K. Krebsbach Jan 2008

Technology Integration Within The Elementary Classroom Setting, Krista K. Krebsbach

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine technology integration in the elementary classroom setting. Technology is now considered to be an important part of a child's educational experience. Research has determined that students do not learn the same way they did years ago, thus schools are changing their methodologies on how to best serve the 21st century student. However, technology integration can not happen all at once; there are many barriers to technology integration. Some examples would be environmental barriers, curriculum issues, and the personal beliefs of the teachers.

School districts are addressing these problems to ensure that their …

Eomesodermin, A Target Gene Of Pou4f2, Is Required For Retinal Ganglion Cell And Optic Nerve Development In The Mouse, Chai-An Mao, Takae Kiyama, Ping Pan, Yasuhide Furuta, Anna-Katerina Hadjantonakis, William H Klein

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The mechanisms regulating retinal ganglion cell (RGC) development are crucial for retinogenesis and for the establishment of normal vision. However, these mechanisms are only vaguely understood. RGCs are the first neuronal lineage to segregate from pluripotent progenitors in the developing retina. As output neurons, RGCs display developmental features very distinct from those of the other retinal cell types. To better understand RGC development, we have previously constructed a gene regulatory network featuring a hierarchical cascade of transcription factors that ultimately controls the expression of downstream effector genes. This has revealed the existence of a Pou domain transcription factor, Pou4f2, that …

Emerging Biotechnologies Demand Defeat Of Proposed Legislation That Attempts To Ban Gene Patents, Gregory C. Ellis Jan 2008

Emerging Biotechnologies Demand Defeat Of Proposed Legislation That Attempts To Ban Gene Patents, Gregory C. Ellis

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In October 2006, Andrew Fire and Craig Mello won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering a process known as RNA interference in the soil nematode Caenorhaditis elegans. More commonly known as RNAi, this process has great therapeutic significance for humans because of its ability to specifically and efficiently regulate gene expression. The capacity to easily regulate gene expression will tremendously impact our ability to combat a wide variety of disorders ranging from cancer to infectious diseases. While the mechanism of RNAi was first published within the last decade, three RNAi-based human therapies are already in clinical trails.

Protein Degradation In Mammalian Hibernator, Spermophilus Lateralis, Vanja Velickovska Jan 2008

Protein Degradation In Mammalian Hibernator, Spermophilus Lateralis, Vanja Velickovska

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Protein synthesis is virtually non-existent during hibernation in golden-mantled ground squirrels. In the presence of negligible protein synthesis continued protein degradation would disrupt the maintenance of homeostasis and the survival of the animal. Earlier investigation showed that ubiquitin conjugate concentrations increase 2-3 fold during hibernation, which would seemingly suggest an increase of protein degradation. In this study I examined protein degradation per se as a function of the temperatures experienced by the hibernator and demonstrated that protein degradation is virtually absent at low temperatures. A new method was developed to determine the rates of ubiquitylation as a function of temperature, …
