Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz Jan 2008

Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz

Faculty Articles

Despite the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), disabled Americans face substantial barriers to entry into the workplace, lack material supports including health care and transportation, and may not receive reasonable accommodation that best supports their functioning. In addition, individuals with impairments have difficulty qualifying as disabled for disability protections. In light of these problems, some commentators suggest that a civil rights or antidiscrimination approach to disability discrimination—an approach for which activists fought for twenty years prior to the enactment of the ADA—may not adequately address disability discrimination. Some critics advocate a return to the social …

Cold Drinks In The Hour Of Chaos, Matt Boerner Jan 2008

Cold Drinks In The Hour Of Chaos, Matt Boerner

Theses

This creative writing thesis follows two characters on a difficult, snow covered journey through the heart of the country. They do n' t know it, but they are on a voyage of self discovery and both of their lives will be changed forever by the conclusion of the text. It is a story about how fate can transform lives in an instant . I liken their journey to two asteroids colliding in space. It is a highly unlikely occurrence with devastating results .

The characters Arlen and Edmund were partially based on people have become familiar with a great deal …

Mouse Of The Schoolyard, Kirk Stephen Lawless Jan 2008

Mouse Of The Schoolyard, Kirk Stephen Lawless

Theses

This thesis consists of two parts that show the diversity and flexibility of the student as a writer.

The original story was drafted, originally culled from a vast array of childhood memories, albeit alone it was too short to fulfill the requirements for a culminating project. The richness of the characters as well as the story itself called out for additional attention. An attempt to develop the story into a larger project proved an exercise in futility, as I felt it could not survive enough additions to increase the success of the project. An attempt to do so found the …

An Unidentified Filarial Species And Its Impact On Fitness In Wild Populations Of The Black-Footed Ferret (Mustela Nigripes), Samantha M. Wisely, Jo Gayle Howard, Steven A. Williams, Odile Bain, Rachel M. Santymire, Katherine D. Bardsley, Elizabeth S. Williams Jan 2008

An Unidentified Filarial Species And Its Impact On Fitness In Wild Populations Of The Black-Footed Ferret (Mustela Nigripes), Samantha M. Wisely, Jo Gayle Howard, Steven A. Williams, Odile Bain, Rachel M. Santymire, Katherine D. Bardsley, Elizabeth S. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Disease can threaten the restoration of endangered species directly by substantially decreasing host survival or indirectly via incremental decreases in survival and reproduction. During a biomedical survey of reintroduced populations of the highly endangered black-footed ferret from 2002 to 2005, microfilariae discovered in the blood were putatively identified as Dirofilaria immitis, and widespread screening was initiated using a commercially available antigen-based ELISA test. A subset of animals (n = 16) was screened for D. immitis using a highly sensitive PCR-based assay. Microfilariae were also molecularly and morphologically characterized. Of 198 animals at six reintroduction sites, 12% had positive results using …

Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young Jan 2008

Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Temperature serves as a cue to regulate gene expression in Escherichia coli and other bacteria. Using DNA microarrays, we identified 297 genes whose expression is increased at 23 6C compared to 37 6C in E. coli K-12. Of these genes, 122 are RpoS-controlled, confirming genome-wide the model that low temperature serves as a primary cue to trigger the general stress response. Several genes expressed at 23 6C overlap with the cold-shock response, suggesting that strategies used to adapt to sudden shifts in temperature also mediate long-term growth at 23 6C. Another category of genes more highly expressed at 23 6C …

Eelgrass In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire And Maine: Monitoring Eelgrass Decline And Educating Local Students, Nora Thompson Beem Jan 2008

Eelgrass In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire And Maine: Monitoring Eelgrass Decline And Educating Local Students, Nora Thompson Beem

Master's Theses and Capstones

Eelgrass monitoring efforts in the Great Bay Estuary (GBE), New Hampshire and Maine, by the New Hampshire Port Authority Mitigation Project (Chp. II) and Nutrient Pollution Indicator (NPI) testing (Chp. III) both confirmed a recent trend of eelgrass decline within the GBE. The decline has been most noticeable in the mid-estuary, where four major tributaries drain into the GBE. Eelgrass beds in proximity to Portsmouth's wastewater treatment facility have also experienced decline, highlighting the effects of such point sources on the eelgrass population.

In an effort to introduce eelgrass, its recent decline and its role in the ecology of the …

The Relationship Between Carnitine Levels And Lipid Peroxidation In Glial Brain Tumors, Ni̇lüfer Bayraktar, Hati̇ce Paşaoğlu, Aydin Paşaoğlu, Memduh Kaymaz, Gürsel Bi̇beroğlu, Sevsen Kulaksizoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: It is assumed that reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation cause cell membrane damage and play a role in oncogenesis. Carnitine and acyl esters, which play a role in intracellular short-, medium-, and long-chain fatty acid metabolism, are one of the defense mechanisms against free radical toxicity. It is thought that the protective effects of carnitine are related with its role in lipid metabolism. In our study, we analyzed the relation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and free carnitine, and C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C8, C10, C12, C14:1, C14, C16:1, C16, C18:1, C18, C20:4 carnitine levels in glial tumors [glioblastoma …

Acute Intoxication By Endosulfan: Any Role Of N-Acetylcysteine Therapy?, Ahmet Demi̇rcan, Eli̇f Çalidağ, Murat Özsaraç, Ayfer Keleş, Fi̇kret Bi̇ldi̇k

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Reactive oxygen species may play a role in the mediation of acetaminophen (APAP) hepatotoxicity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the standard therapy for treatment of the APAP overdose patient. The suspected mechanism of hepatic injury appears to be similar to that of APAP and the empiric use of NAC may be justified, especially in significant endosulfan poisoning. An 18-year-old male presented to the emergency department because of unconsciousness and seizure that developed after acute intentional ingestion of endosulfan. Severe diaphoresis was noted and he had a Glasgow Coma Score of 7 (E1M4V2). Within 8 hours of his arrival in the emergency department, …

Introducing 'Class, Culture, And Public Intellectuals': A Special Issue Of Reconstruction, Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey Jan 2008

Introducing 'Class, Culture, And Public Intellectuals': A Special Issue Of Reconstruction, Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First two paragraphs]

Editing this issue of Reconstruction has become an illustration of the very processes that we set out to discuss and document.

Calling for papers commenced a well-defined project, with all the parameters in place for producing a routine academic work. We knew the Reconstruction editorial collective was keen to do an issue on themes of class. We were also aware of two publication anniversaries in our academic field of U.S. literary radicalism: The New York Intellectuals by Alan Wald in 1987, and The Cultural Front by Michael Denning, about a decade later. Combining a 20th anniversary …

The Dialectics Of Hope: Marxism And Method In The Cultural Front, Charles D. Cunningham

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The tenth anniversary of Michael Denning's The Cultural Front: The Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century is a fitting occasion to revisit a work posing questions that remain fresh today and probably will as long as there is a need to analyze the relationship between dissident cultural movements and a non-egalitarian social order. Encyclopedic in scope, the book is a study of the "cultural production" of the Popular Front of the 1930s and 40s that moves eruditely through a wide range of objects, including proletarian literature, popular music, theater, film, cartoons, and cultural theory. Denning makes …

Genetic Analysis Of Grain Yield And Starch Content In Nine Maize Populations, Zvonimir Zdunic, Anto Mijic, Krunoslav Dugalic, Domagoj Simic, Josip Brkic, Ana Marjanovic Jeromela Jan 2008

Genetic Analysis Of Grain Yield And Starch Content In Nine Maize Populations, Zvonimir Zdunic, Anto Mijic, Krunoslav Dugalic, Domagoj Simic, Josip Brkic, Ana Marjanovic Jeromela

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The objective of this study was to estimate main genetic effects including digenic non-allelic epistasis for yield and starch content in grain by generation mean analysis performed in 9 maize populations (biparental crosses) and their subsequent 6 generations (2 parental, F1 and F2, and 2 backcrosses). The estimated additive-dominance model of inheritance was, due to epistasis, only partially successful in explaining inheritance model for investigated traits and crosses. The additive-dominance model was adequate at 6 crosses for grain yield and 3 crosses for starch content. A digenic epistatic model was sufficient to explain the inheritance model at 6 crosses for …

Comparative Anatomy Of The House Cat, Clouded Leopard, And Saber-Toothed Tiger, Katie Froio Jan 2008

Comparative Anatomy Of The House Cat, Clouded Leopard, And Saber-Toothed Tiger, Katie Froio

Honors Capstones

Comparative anatomy and the construction of muscle maps can be used to study and learn more about the muscle structures and functions and thus the lifestyles of extinct species. In this research three felids from the family Felidae, were compared using scapular muscle maps constructed for each. The scapular muscles of two living felids, the house cat and the endangered clouded leopard were dissected and muscle maps were constructed for each. The scapula bones of the Saber-toothed tiger were examined at the Field Museum and muscle maps were constructed using the maps of the cat and leopard as guides. Roughened …
