Studies Of The Dimerization And Packaging Signals In Hiv-2 Rna, Tayyba Tabassum Baig
Studies Of The Dimerization And Packaging Signals In Hiv-2 Rna, Tayyba Tabassum Baig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The investigation of sequences and structures in the 5' untranslated leader region (5'UTR) of HIV genomic RNA is essential for understanding viral replication because the 5'UTR regulates several essential functions by the alternate presentation and sequestration of signals through conformational changes. Our main focus in this study was to understand those sequences and structures that are involved in dimerization and packaging of HIV-2 RNA. Progressing from previous findings, we studied in detail a 10-nucleotide palindrome sequence (pal; 5'-GGAGUGCUCC-3') of the 5'UTR, located within the major packaging signal, upstream of the dimerization signal (SL1: stem loop-1). Pal has been shown to …

"Blackfeet Belong To The Mountains": Blackfeet Relationships With The Glacier National Park Landscape And Institution, David R. Craig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
National Parks are home to many landscapes of great significance to Native American peoples. The eastern half of Glacier National Park is considered a homeland by the Blackfeet people, and has historically been very important to their material, cultural, and spiritual well-being. This relationship, like those of many other Native peoples, has been severely disrupted by the establishment and presence of the national park, resulting in prolonged conflict between tribes and parks. Blackfeet relationships with this cultural landscape require interaction and engagement in order to realize the full extent of its benefits. Often, these practices serve distinct material needs, however, …

Securing The Rule Of Law Through Interpretive Pluralism: An Argument From Comparative Law, Richard Stith
Securing The Rule Of Law Through Interpretive Pluralism: An Argument From Comparative Law, Richard Stith

Can law rule? For law to rule, it must be enforced. But when law is enforced, not it but its enforcers may rule. To bind those enforcers firmly to the law, they, too, would have to be subjected not only to law but also to a still stronger force—which itself may then be lawless. The very effort to secure the rule of law appears to lead instead to ever more powerful human rulers.
Put another way: If we abolish the police and the courts, in order to leave people truly “not under man but under God and the law,”1 we …

Lessons Learned: Acting As Guardian/Special Master In The Bad Newz Kennels Case, Rebecca J. Huss
Law Faculty Publications
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia appointed Rebecca Huss as the guardian/special master of the pit bulls that were the subject of the case against Michael Vick relating to dog fighting. In April of 2007, the Surry County Sheriff's Department seized fifty-three pit bulls from Vick's home in Virginia. According to the facts set forth in the plea agreement, dogs on the property were killed and subjected to violent dog fights. Similar to human victims of abuse, the dogs needed someone to represent their best interests during litigation. Huss was in charge of determining whether …
The Social Principles Of Jesus: A Critical Re-Examination Of Walter Rauschenbusch’S Social Gospel, James Mark Shields
The Social Principles Of Jesus: A Critical Re-Examination Of Walter Rauschenbusch’S Social Gospel, James Mark Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
It has been nine decades since Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918) published a slim volume entitled The Social Principles of Jesus. Though today less well known than his other works Christianity and the Social Crisis (1907) and Theology for the Social Gospel (1917), it is Social Principles that most adeptly summarizes the theological ethics of Rauschenbusch’s “social gospel.” Taking the form of a pedagogical treatise, Social Principles reads as both a finely tuned analysis of the modern relevance of the teachings of Jesus, and an impassioned plea on the part of its author for an end to the folly of interpreting Christianity …

Aph(L)Orisms (Maximus In Minimis), Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
This collection of “aphlorisms” resulted from a search in my old manuscripts. At that time I was preoccupied everyday with noting down in my little notebook various interesting-to-me expressions that I heard or that came to my mind. Etymologically, aphorism + floral = aph(L)orism, which is a short reflection written on a floral design, or a short poetry accompanied by an artistic background. They are colorful contemplations. Maximus in minimis (Lat.) means very much in very little [max in min], or condensed thought, or ideating essence. They are actually maxims, adages, sayings mostly in one line (uni-stich) with a title, …

Cultural Advantages In China: Tale Of Six Cities, Florentin Smarandache, Fu Yuhua, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Nowadays, plenty of factories from Europe and other developed countries have been relocated to this country, considering its tremendous economic scale and rapid growth rate during the past three decades. But most of what happens inside the China nowadays is deeply hidden from the outside world (“the foreigners” as China people would call). This fact is partly because most reports on China were written by the so‐called fly‐high experts who are busy completing their reports despite a busy schedule. Very few books or reports were written by people inside, or at least “foreigners” who spent a few years in China. …

Composing Identity In Online Instructional Contexts, Kevin Eric Depew
Composing Identity In Online Instructional Contexts, Kevin Eric Depew
English Faculty Publications
As writing instruction moves from the defined spatial and temporal parameters of the traditional classroom to various degrees of online interaction—from explanatory e-mails to courseware mediated distance education—instructors have had to reconceptualize how they identify themselves to their student audience. While many instructors have tried to translate their face-to-face strategies to the digital medium with disparate degrees of success, others understand the different parameters digital media offer and see new opportunities for literally composing their instructional identity. This contribution will examine the strategies instructors have used to compose their identities with computer-mediated communications and propose suggestions for negotiating this process.

The striped bass (Morone saxatilis) is an economically and ecologically important finfish species along the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. Recent stock assessments in Chesapeake Bay (USA) indicate that non-fishing mortality in striped bass has increased since 1999, concomitant with very high (>50%) prevalence of visceral and dermal disease caused by Mycobacterium spp. Current fishery assessment models do not differentiate between disease and other components of non-fishing mortality (e. g., senescence, predation); therefore, disease impact on the striped bass population has not been established. Specific measurement of mortality associated with mycobacteriosis in wild striped bass is …

Altruism And Perception Of A Common Humanity In The World Value Survey Waves 2 And 4: A Quantitative Analysis, Suzanne Hodge
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This paper seeks to understand the motivation of those who take time from their lives to help others. The research will look at altruistic attitudes and behaviors around the world and determine whether individuals exhibiting these behaviors believe in a common humanity. It will consider what the individual says he believes and how or if he chooses to act on those beliefs. The statistics used for the analysis of the World Values Survey Waves 2 and 4 in this paper are cross tabulations, factor analysis, including assigning factor scores to each observation, Pearson’s correlation, linear regression, and an independent samples …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The impetus for my journey was the desire to learn more about another culture, and pursue the idea of the old cliché: be the change I wanted to see in the world. This journey fulfilled the requirements of the project in multiple ways. It was a major risk to travel to another country with a language barrier on my own. The amount of work it took to prepare for the trip and face the challenges of the experience itself was very labor intensive. I had to do this because I needed to see that I could make a difference. I …

Micrornas (Mirnas) In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Peter T. Nelson, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard W. Rajeev
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Aging-related neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are the culmination of many different genetic and environmental influences. Prior studies have shown that RNAs are pathologically altered during the inexorable course of some NDs. Recent evidence suggests that microRNAs (miRNAs) may be a contributing factor in neurodegeneration. miRNAs are brain-enriched, small (~22 nucleotides) non-coding RNAs that participate in mRNA translational regulation. Although discovered in the framework of worm development, miRNAs are now appreciated to play a dynamic role in many mammalian brain-related biochemical pathways, including neuroplasticity and stress responses. Research about miRNAs in the context of neurodegeneration is accumulating rapidly, and the goal of …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1), a member of the MAPKKK family, is a key mediator of proinflammatory and stress signals. Activation of TAK1 by proinflammatory cytokines and T and B cell receptors induces the nuclear localization of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) and the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/AP1 and P38, which play important roles in mediating inflammation, immune responses, T and B cell activation, and epithelial cell survival. Here, we report that TAK1 is critical for the survival of both hematopoietic cells and hepatocytes. Deletion of TAK1 results in bone marrow (BM) and liver failure in mice …

Analysis Of The N-Glycans Of Recombinant Human Factor Ix Purified From Transgenic Pig Milk, Geun-Cheol Gil, William H. Velander, Kevin E. Van Cott
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Glycosylation of recombinant proteins is of particular
importance because it can play significant roles in the
clinical properties of the glycoprotein. In this work, the
N-glycan structures of recombinant human Factor IX (tg-
FIX) produced in the transgenic pig mammary gland were
determined. Themajority of theN-glycans of transgenic pigderived
Factor IX (tg-FIX) are complex, bi-antennary with
one or two terminal N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) moieties.
We also found that the N-glycan structures of tg-FIX
produced in the porcine mammary epithelial cells differed
with respect to N-glycans from glycoproteins produced in
other porcine tissues. tg-FIX contains …
