Earthworm Abundances In Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Pastures In Northwest Arkansas, Ashley Rashe, Mary C. Savin

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The ecology of organisms that co-evolve within an ecosystem is likely to be distinct from that involving organisms recently introduced into an area. To better understand the relationship of earthworms with endophyte-infected tall fescue, earthworms in novel and toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures were enumerated and identified as adults or juveniles. We hypothesized that differences in endophyte infection of the fescue would influence earthworm abundances. Earthworms in two toxic and two novel endophyte-infected tall fescue fields in Fayetteville, Ark., were sampled weekly from January through July 2007. Each type of endophyte-infected pasture was established in 1997 and 2003. Sampling was …

Securing The Rule Of Law Through Interpretive Pluralism: An Argument From Comparative Law, Richard Stith Jan 2008

Securing The Rule Of Law Through Interpretive Pluralism: An Argument From Comparative Law, Richard Stith

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

As the distinction between interpretation and politics diminishes, the need for pluralism in interpretation increases. The Article argues, first, that the rule of law requires that no one tribunal possess the power to subordinate a whole legal system to its politicized rule.

The Article then uses comparative legal study to analyze two tested alternatives to concentrating interpretive authority in a single court. Under the "separation of powers" approach, some or many jurisdictionally distinct institutions are granted powers to interpret and apply the constitution and the laws. A multiplicity of interpreters helps to prevent domination by any one legal ideology and …

Low-Density Rodent Communities In Eastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Jean F. Stankavich Jan 2008

Low-Density Rodent Communities In Eastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Jean F. Stankavich

Virginia Journal of Science

Two communities of small mammals were live trapped every other week for 15 months in linear oilfield habitat bordered by forested swampland in eastern Virginia. All nine species of the rodent community were present, mostly in low numbers and often intermittently. All species were characterized by high transiency, with a minority of marked animals becoming resident. Despite high trappability, all but two species in these communities had extremely low densities, suggesting that most species could not sustain populations via in situ reproduction.

Outrageous State, Sectarianized Citizens: Deconstructing The ‘Textbook Controversy’ In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali Jan 2008

Outrageous State, Sectarianized Citizens: Deconstructing The ‘Textbook Controversy’ In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines the ‘textbook controversy’ (2000-2005) that arose when the Pakistan state introduced new, overtly Sunni textbooks in the Northern Areas, and the local Shia population began to agitate for a more balanced curriculum. The conflict reached an acute stage during 2004-2005, as violent confrontations took place between Shia and Sunni communities, and a constant curfew paralyzed daily life in Gilgit for eleven months. I argue that the Shia mobilization against textbook Islam was not just a form of “sectarian” outrage; rather, it symbolized a broader political claim to inclusion in a context of long-standing regional subordination and religious …

Alien Invaders! On-Site Programming (Grade 6), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth Jan 2008

Alien Invaders! On-Site Programming (Grade 6), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth

Curriculum materials (FE)

In the “Alien Invaders!” program, students investigate how quagga mussels might affect Lake Mead. Students collect water quality data such as clarity, pH, and temperature to determine current habitat conditions that have allowed quagga mussels to thrive in Lake Mead. Students learn about the consequences that quagga mussels could have on the lake and its living and non-living resources. Using the knowledge they’ve gained, students create their own management plans to prevent the spread of quagga mussels to other waterways.

Monitoring Programs To Assess Reintroduction Efforts: A Critical Component In Recovery, Erin Muths, Victoria J. Dreitz Jan 2008

Monitoring Programs To Assess Reintroduction Efforts: A Critical Component In Recovery, Erin Muths, Victoria J. Dreitz

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Reintroduction is a powerful tool in our conservation toolbox. However, the necessary follow–up, i.e. long–term monitoring, is not commonplace and if instituted may lack rigor. We contend that valid monitoring is possible, even with sparse data. We present a means to monitor based on demographic data and a projection model using the Wyoming toad (Bufo baxteri) as an example. Using an iterative process, existing data is built upon gradually such that demographic estimates and subsequent inferences increase in reliability. Reintroduction and defensible monitoring may become increasingly relevant as the outlook for amphibians, especially in tropical regions, continues to …

A Literature Review Of The Effects Of Energy Development On Ungulates: Implications For Central And Eastern Montana, Mark Hebblewhite Jan 2008

A Literature Review Of The Effects Of Energy Development On Ungulates: Implications For Central And Eastern Montana, Mark Hebblewhite

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

A literature review of >160 scientific and technical reports was conducted to review the effects of energy development ungulates, separated by important seasonal and habitat types. Effects of energy development and human activity in general were assessed for elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, moose, bighorn sheep and woodland caribou. Weaknesses of the existing literature in addressing and providing guidelines for the management of energy development are presented. A recommended course of action for management oriented research is presented. Finally, a searchable electronic database is developed of the literature including abstracts and digital copies to aid in evaluating future energy development …

Lions And Prions And Deer Demise, Michael W. Miller, Heather M. Swanson, Lisa L. Wolfe, Fred G. Quartarone, Sherri L. Huwer, Charles H. Southwick, Paul M. Lukacs Jan 2008

Lions And Prions And Deer Demise, Michael W. Miller, Heather M. Swanson, Lisa L. Wolfe, Fred G. Quartarone, Sherri L. Huwer, Charles H. Southwick, Paul M. Lukacs

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Background: Contagious prion diseases – scrapie of sheep and chronic wasting disease of several species in the deer family – give rise to epidemics that seem capable of compromising host population viability. Despite this prospect, the ecological consequences of prion disease epidemics in natural populations have received little consideration.

Methodology/Principal Findings: Using a cohort study design, we found that prion infection dramatically lowered survival of free-ranging adult (.2-year-old) mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus): estimated average life expectancy was 5.2 additional years for uninfected deer but only 1.6 additional years for infected deer. Prion infection also increased nearly fourfold the rate of …

Scientific Review For The Identification Of Critical Habitat For Woodland Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus Caribou), Boreal Population, In Canada, Mark Hebblewhite, Environment Canada

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), Boreal Population (herein referred to as boreal caribou), are formally listed as Threatened under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA). The Act requires the Minister of Environment to prepare a Recovery Strategy for the species that includes, to the extent possible and based upon the best available information, an identifi cation of its Critical Habitat and/or, if there is insuffi cient information available, a Schedule of Studies to determine that information. In August 2007, Environment Canada (EC) launched a science-based review with the mandate to identify Critical Habitat to the extent possible, using the …

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown Jan 2008

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the paper is to determine whether employee behaviors or non-employee behaviors have a more significant effect on health inspection grades given by the Southern Nevada Health District. As foodborne illness outbreaks continue to rise, discovering whether the violations stem from employee behaviors or from items not related to employee behavior is essential. The results will be useful for both industry and academics in helping to establish a means for understanding where violations occur within food establishments; 205 restaurant health inspections were collected with grades other than 'A'. Behavior based violations had a higher impact on the grade. …

The Effect Of Math Anxiety On Learning A Novel Math Task, Jeremy Adam Krause Jan 2008

The Effect Of Math Anxiety On Learning A Novel Math Task, Jeremy Adam Krause

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The focus of this experiment was to assess the effect of math anxiety on learning a novel math task (modular arithmetic). While participants that were low in math anxiety performed significantly better (in terms of reaction time) than participants that were in the medium and high math anxiety groups on repeated problems, the low math anxious participants did not perform differently than the medium and high math anxiety groups on unique problems. This indicates that the low math anxious participants were better able to learn the procedure of modular arithmetic but were not significantly different in their ability to learn …

The Conserved Mechanism Of Icsa Polar Targeting Among Proteobacteria, Characterization Of The Omptin Family, And The Roles And Regulation Of Icsp In Shigella Flexneri, Eun-Hae Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Shigella flexneri is a gram-negative intracellular pathogen that is a global health problem, causing severe bacillary dysentery. In the past 30 years, research has enabled us to have a better understanding of the molecular basis of Shigella pathogenesis. In this study, we further expand our knowledge of key determinants at molecular and cellular levels. This work is composed of four separate investigations; Firstly, we examined whether the elusive mechanism of protein targeting found in Shigella is conserved in three closely related gamma-proteobacterial families by using GFP fusions and microscopy. Our results indicate that the mechanism of protein localization to the …

The Fair Use Doctrine And Trackjacking: Beautiful Animal Or Destroyer Of Worlds?, S. Wayne Clemons, Jr. Jan 2008

The Fair Use Doctrine And Trackjacking: Beautiful Animal Or Destroyer Of Worlds?, S. Wayne Clemons, Jr.

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

"Trackjacking" is the unauthorized replacement of the original soundtrack of an audiovisual recording, such as a movie or television show, with another that is designed to alter substantially the plot and/or characters of the original work. While trackjacking is a creative and entertaining form of art, it may also constitute copyright infringement if the original work is one that is copyrighted. However, if certain criteria are met, the "fair use" doctrine provides a mechanism for courts to excuse what otherwise would be considered copyright infringement. Because the unique nature of trackjacking allows the new work to be distributed in such …
