“Bridging Activities,” New Media Literacies, And Advanced Foreign Language Proficiency, Steven L. Thorne, Jonathon Reinhardt Jan 2008

“Bridging Activities,” New Media Literacies, And Advanced Foreign Language Proficiency, Steven L. Thorne, Jonathon Reinhardt

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article we propose the pedagogical model bridging activities to address advanced foreign language proficiency in the context of existing and emerging internet communication and information tools and communities. The article begins by establishing the need for language and genre-focused activities at the advanced level that attend to the shifting social practices and emerging literacies associated with digital media. Grounded in principles of language awareness and the concept of multiliteracies, the bridging activities model centers on guided exploration and analysis of student selected or created digital vernacular texts originating in Web 2.0 and other technologies/practices such as instant messaging …

Nf-Kappab Mediates The Survival Of Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells Exposed To Cigarette Smoke Extract, Xiangde Liu, Shinsaku Togo, Mona Al-Mugotir, Huijung Kim, Qiuhong Fang, Tetsu Kobayashi, Xingqi Wang, Lijun Mao, Peter Bitterman, Stephen I. Rennard Jan 2008

Nf-Kappab Mediates The Survival Of Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells Exposed To Cigarette Smoke Extract, Xiangde Liu, Shinsaku Togo, Mona Al-Mugotir, Huijung Kim, Qiuhong Fang, Tetsu Kobayashi, Xingqi Wang, Lijun Mao, Peter Bitterman, Stephen I. Rennard

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that low concentrations of cigarette smoke extract induce DNA damage without leading to apoptosis or necrosis in human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs), and that IL-6/STAT3 signaling contributes to the cell survival. Since NF-kappaB is also involved in regulating apoptosis and cell survival, the current study was designed to investigate the role of NF-kappaB in mediating cell survival in response to cigarette smoke exposure in HBECs.

METHODS: Both the pharmacologic inhibitor of NF-kappaB, curcumin, and RNA interference targeting p65 were used to block NF-kappaB signaling in HBECs. Apoptosis and cell survival were then assessed by various …

Game Development: All Or Nothing, Brandon Neff Jan 2008

Game Development: All Or Nothing, Brandon Neff

Senior Seminars

The development of a game using Dark Basic is both challenging and entertaining. The game ALL OR NOTHING uses Dark Basic to make a strategic battle game where each move is critical to winning the game. The use of a requirements document was necessary to determine the main components of the game. Once the requirements were set the ALL OR NOTHING game was broken down into seven main components. The seven main components were the opening screen, loading the images, randomizing the territories and soldiers, functionality of the territories, dice roll, battle, and ending screen. After these seven main components …

You Can Take It With You, Amelia Benner Jan 2008

You Can Take It With You, Amelia Benner

Illinois Wesleyan University Magazine, 2002-2017

When the class of 2012 moved to Illinois Wesleyan this fall, they brought the usual necessities. A toothbrush. Pens and pencils. Extra-long sheets. And of course, at their mothers’ behest, plenty of socks. But no matter how difficult it was to fit their belongings into a few boxes and suitcases, most made room for that one item they couldn’t leave behind.

Challenges To Implementing The Greenhouse Gas Inventory At Illinois Wesleyan University, Leslie Morrison '08

Honors Projects

This report investigates what conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory at Illinois Wesleyan would entail. In it I discuss what emissions Illinois Wesleyan should consider including and how Illinois Wesleyan would collect this data. The findings are based on interviews I conducted on campus with Illinois Wesleyan staff who were deemed likely to have access to data and also on inventories performed by American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) signatory institutions.

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Ken Haycock, Jeremy Kemp

Faculty Publications

Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.

Stacking The Deck: Privileging "Employer Free Choice" Over Industrial Democracy In The Card-Check Debate, Raja Raghunath Jan 2008

Stacking The Deck: Privileging "Employer Free Choice" Over Industrial Democracy In The Card-Check Debate, Raja Raghunath

Nebraska Law Review

In the American system of labor relations, unions may only represent employees in collective bargaining if they prove they have the support of a majority of the employees they seek to represent. The representation election process created by the National Labor Relations Act (the "NLRA" or the "Act") in 1935 is the statutory method of making this showing for most private-sector employees. In the last decade, "card check" organizing has become increasingly popular with unions as an alternative to representation elections.

In contrast to political elections, which occur within the framework of our existing democracy, union representation elections are the …

Why Resilience May Not Always Be A Good Thing: Lessons In Ecosystem Restoration From Glen Canyon And The Everglades, Sandi Zellmer, Lance Gunderson Jan 2008

Why Resilience May Not Always Be A Good Thing: Lessons In Ecosystem Restoration From Glen Canyon And The Everglades, Sandi Zellmer, Lance Gunderson

Nebraska Law Review

In this Article, we focus on three elemental ingredients. The first is the emerging system property of resilience, a concept that describes a more complex model of change and restoration than typical resource management goals related to maximizing social uses and achieving optimum yields of resource outputs. Resilience is a characteristic of both social and ecological systems. Resilience theory suggests that complex systems can exist in fundamentally different regimes, and resilience is the property that mediates transitions among those regimes. Hence resilience must be overcome when undertaking objectives that involve regime changes, such as an ecological restoration or a social …

Hiding Out: Creative Resistance Among Anonymous Workbloggers, Abigail Schoneboom Jan 2008

Hiding Out: Creative Resistance Among Anonymous Workbloggers, Abigail Schoneboom

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Anonymous workbloggers—employees who write online diaries about their work—are often simultaneously productive workers and savage critics of the corporate cultures in which they toil. Writing under an assumed identity, these workers create satirical portraits of their supervisors and colleagues, rail against management gurus and corporate buzzwords, celebrate time-wasting capers, and daydream about quitting. Their irreverent and fictionalized accounts of work, which are shielded from the gaze of co-workers and supervisors, reveal how office workers critically negotiate a labor process that, increasingly, demands their hearts and minds.

This study, which comprises an overview of media and organizational responses to the phenomenon, …
