Correlation Of Electron Donor Concentrations In Sediments With Sediment Properties: New Providence, Iowa, Bijesh Maharjan
Correlation Of Electron Donor Concentrations In Sediments With Sediment Properties: New Providence, Iowa, Bijesh Maharjan
Theses and Dissertations
The concentrations of electron donors in aquifer sediments are important in understanding the fate and transport of redox-sensitive constituents in ground water, such as nitrate. In this study, 50 sediment samples were collected from below the water table from 11 boreholes at the US Geological Survey Agricultural Chemicals Transport site near New Providence, Iowa. All samples were analyzed for gravel, sand (coarse, medium, and fine), silt, clay, inorganic carbon contents and for the following electron donors: organic carbon, ferrous iron, and inorganic sulfide. A subset of sediment samples was analyzed for organic sulfur, but all of the 14 samples were …
To Imprecate Or Not: Psalm 137 And Its Appropriation In Music, Elizabeth Boase
To Imprecate Or Not: Psalm 137 And Its Appropriation In Music, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
Psalm 137 opens with lament and closes with one of the most strident imprecations in the Psalter. Read against the backdrop of the Babylonian exile, the imprecation incorporates both Edom and Babylon, concluding with the words “Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock.”
The closing verses have proven to be problematic for commentators. The tension is well expressed by R. Clifford, who states “Psalm 137 has the distinction of having one of the most beloved opening lines and the most horrifying closing line of any psalm. If the psalm ended at verse …

Spawning Stock Identification Of Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua) In Us Waters Using Pan I And Microsatellite Genetic Markers, Timothy S. Breton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Most Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) stocks within U.S. waters are currently in decline as a result of overexploitation and fishing pressure from commercial fisheries. A better understanding of the genetic structure of cod populations is essential to identify stocks for successful fisheries management. In this study, the genetic structure of cod from major temporally and geographically distinct spawning grounds in U.S. waters was investigated. Adult and juvenile cod were sampled from aggregations within the Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, and southern New England waters in cooperation with commercial fishermen and state fishery biologists. Caudal fin clips were collected and analyzed …

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food producing sectors of the world, with an annual compounding growth rate of 8.8% (since 1970). In spite of the rapid growth, scientific and public concerns have arisen about the sustainability and environmental impacts of the industry, including aquaculture's dependence on wild fish products, eutrophication from animal waste and uneaten food, and escapement of genetically altered farming stock. The use of behavioral studies may help refine commercial aquaculture by obtaining information to design operations that optimize growth, and feed utilization, while increasing production and animal well being. The goal of this study was …
Catching The Unique Rabbit: Why Pets Should Be Reclassified As Inimitable Property Under The Law, Kelly Wilson
Catching The Unique Rabbit: Why Pets Should Be Reclassified As Inimitable Property Under The Law, Kelly Wilson
Cleveland State Law Review
This Note introduces a new approach for resolving the issue of inadequate compensation for pet loss by arguing for the adoption of a new classification of personal property called inimitable property. The new categorization takes into consideration the live, conscious, and unique qualities of pets that distinguish them from other sorts of inanimate property.

The Mural As A Teaching Tool In Elementary Education, Mignon Hatton
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the idea that the mural is a valuable tool that teachers should be encouraged to use. The mural project combines co-operative group work, history lessons, review of current events, social changes, and self evaluation. These public art forms are easily accessible because they can be found on the walls of many public buildings as well as on the Internet. The creation of a mural involves cross curricular learning in math, science, and the language arts.
A Journey Through Time, Chance, And Change, Maribeth Chancellor Anders
A Journey Through Time, Chance, And Change, Maribeth Chancellor Anders
Theses and Dissertations
My work from 2004 to 2008 represents and exploration of house and boat forms as a metaphor for human experience in a journey through time, chance, and change. I draw on personal experience, observation, and myth. Concerns over the public education system that are evident in some of the work come from public school teaching experience. In some sculptures there are references to family and friends. Cultural references connect to my life and travels through parts of Europe and Africa from 1972 to 1975. Art history studies and research have facilitated an increased awareness of cultural and historical relationships. The …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the history of the Rush Creek Mining District from 1886 to 1918. The Rush Creek Mining District is located in the southeast corner of Marion County in north central Arkansas. During the 32 year period from 1886 to 1918 approximately 26,000 tons of zinc ore concentrates were mined from the district, making it the largest producer of zinc in northern Arkansas. During these years the community of Rush grew from a tiny mining camp to a town of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people during the height of the mining boom during World War I. A review of …

Women In Black: Shirin Neshat's Images Of Veiled Revolutionaries, Heyam Dannawi
Theses and Dissertations
Shirin Neshat, an Iranian-born artist, uses photography and film to address issues of female identity. When the Islamic Revolution took place in 1978-1979, Neshat was living in the United States. Unable to return to her homeland, she was exiled for eleven years. The Islamic Revolution became a defining moment in Neshat's life and work. The profound change that took place in Iran inspired her to address the role of Iranian women in religion and society, which subsequently became the basis of much of her work. The hijab or veil became a symbol of repression and oppression after the Islamic Revolution. …

Department of Physiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: While increased urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) expression in breast cancer tissue is directly associated with poor prognosis, recent evidence suggests that uPA overexpression may suppress tumor growth and prolong survival. Celecoxib has been shown to have antiangiogenic and antiproliferative properties. We sought to determine if uPA, PA inhibitor (PAI)-1 and prostaglandin (PG)E2 expression in nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) and uPA and PGE2 expression in plasma were altered by celecoxib dose and concentration in women at increased breast cancer risk.
METHODS: NAF and plasma samples were collected in women at increased breast cancer risk before and 2 weeks after taking …

Conservation And Management Plans For Angiopteris Evecta (Forst.) Hoffm. (Marattiaceae: Pteridophyta): An Endangered Species, Kamini Srivastava
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Angiopteris evecta, due to its rarity, is potentially a species of high value for fern enthusiasts. This is a threatened species which is included in the endangered categories in the ‘Red Data Book’ of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Since this species is also known to be of importance for its ethnomedicinal uses, this is a matter of great concern. If we do not think about its conservation and protection, this species could very well disappear from the face of this earth. For these reasons, the present paper deals with the habitat, cultural value and …

Ethnobotanical And Ethnomedicinal Survey Of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, District Gondia (M.S.) India- Part I, D. K. Koche Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The purpose of this study was to document the indigenous folk knowledge of the inhabitants of the Nagzira Wild Life Sanctuary in eastern Maharashtra, a region of the Indian subcontinent long known for its extraordinary beauty and biodiversity. One important result of the survey that was conducted of the inhabitants of this rugged hill country is that it revealed a total of 70 different plant species having ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal uses. Taxonomically, the plants used by the villagers of this area were classified under 32 families of angiosperms.

Computational Monitoring And Steering Using Network-Optimized Visualization And Ajax Web Server, Mengxia Zhu, Qishi Wu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Computer Science Publications
We describe a system for computational monitoring and steering of an on-going computation or visualization on a remote host such as workstation or supercomputer. Unlike the conventional “launch-and-leave” batch computations, this system enables: (i) continuous monitoring of variables of an on-going remote computation using visualization tools, and (ii) interactive specification of chosen computational parameters to steer the computation. The visualization and control streams are supported over wide-area networks using transport protocols based on stochastic approximation methods to provide stable throughput. Using performance models for transport channels and visualization modules, we develop a visualization pipeline configuration solution that minimizes end-to-end delay …

Movement And Habitat Selection By Invasive Asian Carps In A Large River, Kelly L. Degrandchamp, James E. Garvey, Robert E. Colombo
Publications
We evaluated the habitat use and movements of 50 adult bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and 50 silver carp H. molitrix by means of ultrasonic telemetry during spring–summer 2004 and 2005 to gain insight into the conditions that facilitate their establishment, persistence, and dispersal in the lower Illinois River (river kilometer 0–130). Movement and habitat use were monitored with stationary receivers and boat-mounted tracking. The relative availability of four macrohabitat categories (main channel, island side channel, channel border, and connected backwater) was quantified to determine selection; discriminant function analysis was used to evaluate changes in physical characteristics within each category. A …

A New Playground: Sexual Predators And Pedophiles Online: Criminalizing Cyber Sex Between Adults And Minors, Tyler P. Lovejoy
St. Thomas Law Review
There is a danger that exists every time a child or minor logs onto the Internet, as pedophiles no longer need to confront their victims "face-to-face." Within the depths of their homes and personal offices, sexual predators have been able to extend their influence across the world and into every home where a child lives that comports to the predator's certain or specific tastes. In a survey conducted by the Crimes Against Children Research Center, the institution, housed at the University of New Hampshire, revealed that nearly one (1) in five (5), or nineteen percent (19%), of children using the …

Legal Aspects Of Animal Sacrifice Within The Context Of Afro-Caribbean Religions, Jose A. Lammoglia
St. Thomas Law Review
Animal sacrifices are at the core of many religious rituals within the context of Afro-Caribbean Belief Systems. These religions, also known as New World religions, are a mixture of Catholic and pre-Christian African beliefs, among them Cuban Santeria, Palo, and Haitian Voodoo. Cuban Santeria is also known as Yoruba, Lukumi, and Regla de Osha' The ritual animal sacrifices found within the context of these religions follow guidelines similar to those of Muslim and Kosher Jewish practices. Only the healthiest animals are chosen as offerings to the gods or orishas. The ritual sacrifice happens in a swift manner to allow for …

A Comparative Analysis Of Viral Matrix Proteins Using Disorder Predictors, Gerard Kian-Meng Goh, A. Keith Dunker, Vladimir N. Uversky
Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: A previous study (Goh G.K.-M., Dunker A.K., Uversky V.N. (2008) Protein intrinsic disorder toolbox for comparative analysis of viral proteins. BMC Genomics. 9 (Suppl. 2), S4) revealed that HIV matrix protein p17 possesses especially high levels of predicted intrinsic disorder (PID). In this study, we analyzed the PID patterns in matrix proteins of viruses related and unrelated to HIV-1.
Results: Both SIVmac and HIV-1 p17 proteins were predicted by PONDR VLXT to be highly disordered with subtle differences containing 50% and 60% disordered residues, respectively. SIVmac is very closely related to HIV-2. A specific region that is predicted …

Articles by Maurer Faculty
In this Article the authors will compare the development of constitutional law and federal anti-discrimination law in the context of higher education of African-Americans in the U.S. and Dalits in India. Both groups suffer from oppression and discrimination based upon a hereditary trait and related to their integration into mainstream society; neither group is completely isolated from the majority population responsible for the discrimination; and African-Americans and Dalits approximate similar percentages of their country's population. Based upon the 2000 census, African-Americans constitute 12.7% of the American populations, and, according to the 1991 Census Report of India, Dalits make up 16.5% …
Rethinking Ngos: The Economy Of Survival And Global Governance, Marc Abélès
Rethinking Ngos: The Economy Of Survival And Global Governance, Marc Abélès
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This article explores the concept of "global politics," an evolving set of systems that undermine our traditional view of government. These underlying systems, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), exert great influence on the power and actions of nation-states. Thus, while current global politics are largely dependent on the actions and strategies of nation-states, nation-states are not the only actors at work. The article argues for a view of global politics that takes these other systems, particularly NGOs, into account.

Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
Application Of Computer Simulation Modeling To Evaluate Business Continuity Plans, Jose Francisco Molina Garcia Plaza
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Business continuity plans (BCP) help organizations plan for and withstand the occurrence of unexpected events that interrupt the normal operation of business. Managers typically develop several alternate plans to minimize the business impact of unexpected events. The problem for decision makers is that comparative evaluation of BCP is typically done using subjective judgments.
This research uses a case study approach focusing on a single organization and a single business continuity application to propose the use of computer simulation as a tool for managers to identify and evaluate different BCP prior to committing resources. In the context of an insurance firm, …

The Democratic Aspect Of The Establishment Clause: A Refutation Of The Argument That The Clause Serves To Protect Religious Or Nonreligious Minorities, Patrick Garry
Faculty Publications
A survey of Establishment Clause doctrines and commentary reveals that the Clause is often interpreted as a minority rights provision, protecting religious and nonreligious minorities from being exposed in certain ways to society's dominant religions. This Article argues against such an interpretation. It portrays the Establishment Clause as a structural provision of the Constitution, concerned with democratic processes and limited government, much like the doctrines of federalism and separation of powers. This Article also asserts that democratic values and concern for majority rule constitute core values of the Establishment Clause. Whereas the Free Exercise Clause protects minority rights, the Establishment …

Hofstra Law Review
This article appears in the Hofstra Law Review symposium issue on the Supplementary Guidelines for the Mitigation Function of Defense Teams in Death Penalty cases.
The article builds on converging lines of research in the social sciences that have constructed a framework which conceptualizes the roots of violent behavior as extending beyond the personality or character structure of those people who perform it, connecting it historically to the brutalizing experiences they have commonly shared as well as the immediately precipitating situations in which their violence transpires.
The piece explains how to translate these insights into the collection and presentation of …
