The Human Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis (Hare/Stabilin-2) Is A Systemic Clearance Receptor For Heparin, Ed Harris, Janet A. Weigel, Paul H. Weigel
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The hyaluronic acid receptor for endocytosis (HARE; also designated Stabilin-2) mediates systemic clearance of hyaluronan and chondroitin sulfates from the vascular and lymphatic circulations. The internalized glycosaminoglycans are degraded in lysosomes, thus completing their normal turnover process. Sinusoidal endothelial cells of human liver, lymph node, and spleen express two HARE isoforms of 315 and 190 kDa. Here we report that the 190- and 315-kDa HARE isoforms, expressed stably either in Flp-In 293 cell lines or as soluble ectodomains, specifically bind heparin (Hep). The Kd for Hep binding to purified 190- and 315-kDa HARE ectodomains was 17.2 ± 4.9 and …
The Jurisprudence Of Love, Barbara L. Atwell
The Jurisprudence Of Love, Barbara L. Atwell
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Part I of this article explores the concept of Love as an energetic, vibrational, and spiritual force. Part II provides an overview of what Love means in practice. Part III explores two areas of the law--access to health care and global warming--and suggests that significant improvements to those laws would be generated by a Love-based approach to the law.
Of Persons And The Criminal Law: (Second Tier) Personhood As A Prerequisite For Victimhood, Luis E. Chiesa
Of Persons And The Criminal Law: (Second Tier) Personhood As A Prerequisite For Victimhood, Luis E. Chiesa
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The trial of Michael Vick illustrates how our current criminal laws increasingly treat nonhuman creatures as "victims," with all of the consequences that this entails, including the possibility to order that restitution be paid to the animals. In light of these considerations, it is fair to say that from a purely descriptive point of view, nonhuman creatures can qualify for victimhood. This does not mean, however, that this conclusion is normatively appealing. Some have argued that this approach is profoundly misguided, given that the criminal law should only aim to safeguard the rights of humans.
The Rise Of Spanish And Latin American Criminal Theory, Luis E. Chiesa
The Rise Of Spanish And Latin American Criminal Theory, Luis E. Chiesa
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
As the contributions to this two-part special issue demonstrate, Spanish and Latin American criminal theory has attained a remarkable degree of sophistication. Regrettably, Anglo-American scholars have had limited access to this rich body of literature. With this volume, the New Criminal Law Review has taken a very important first step toward rectifying this situation.
Although the articles written for this special issue cover a vast range of subjects, they can be divided into four main categories: (i) the legitimacy of the criminal sanction, (2) the punishability of omissions, (3) the challenges that international criminal law and the fight against terrorism …

Long Term Tirofiban Infusion Before Percutaneous Coronary Intervention In Patients With Angiographically Massive Intracoronary Thrombus, Timur Timurkaynak, Ugur Arslan, Serhat Balcioglu, Sedat Turkoglu
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of long term tirofiban infusion before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on the angiographic results in the setting of visible intracoronary thrombus and compare this with conventional PCI performed without tirofiban. METHODS: Out of 2835 PCI procedures performed in Gazi University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey between 1999 and 2006, 156 (5.5%) patients with massive thrombus in whom PCI were applied, were included in this retrospective study. Out of these 156 patients, 82 (53%) had PCI in the presence of angiographically apparent thrombus without tirofiban and named as group A. The remaining 74 (47%) received long term tirofiban …
Comparison Of Estradiol-Trenbolone Acetate Implant Programs For Yearling Steers Of Two Genotypes, Robbi H. Pritchard
Comparison Of Estradiol-Trenbolone Acetate Implant Programs For Yearling Steers Of Two Genotypes, Robbi H. Pritchard
South Dakota Beef Report, 2008
Yearling steers (n = 400) were used to evaluate relative payout periods for implants when feeding high grain content diets. Implant treatments included (1) control (nonimplanted), (2) Synovex Plus, (3) revalor-s, and (4) Ralgro-revalor-s. The Synovex Plus (2), revalor-s (3) and Ralgro (4) were administered on day 1. The reimplant with revalor-s (4) was admnistered after 56 d on feed. Steers were managed in two groups. Initial BW and days fed were 782 lb, 131 d (Group I), and 661 lb, 145 d (Group II). Implants increased production rates and efficiencies, increased carcass size and reduced marbling when compared to …

Waiting For Child Developmental And Rehabilitation Services: An Overview Of Issues And Needs, Anton R. Miller, Robert Armstrong, Louise C. Mâsse, Anne F. Klassen, Jane Shen, Maureen E. O’Donnell
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Concern about the length of time that children, young people, and families may have to wait to access assessment, diagnostic, interventional, therapeutic, and supportive child developmental and rehabilitation (CDR) services is widespread, but adequate data collection and research on this issue remain limited. We review key concepts and issues relevant to waiting for CDR services from the published literature, a national workshop devoted to this topic, and international experience. We conclude that gaps in data, evidence, and consensus challenge our ability to address the issue of waiting for CDR services in a systematic way. A program of research coupled with …
Physical Evidence At Carthage Jail And What It Reveals About The Assassination Of Joseph And Hyrum Smith, Joseph L. Lyon, David W. Lyon
Physical Evidence At Carthage Jail And What It Reveals About The Assassination Of Joseph And Hyrum Smith, Joseph L. Lyon, David W. Lyon
BYU Studies
In 1844, Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was assassinated in Carthage, Illinois, along with his brother, Hyrum. Much has been written about the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, but little attention has been paid to the crime scene in Carthage Jail. This article examines eyewitness accounts of the assault, the layout of the crime scene, the physical evidence left in the jail, and the types of weapons used and the wounds they inflicted on the Smith brothers, John Taylor, and Willard Richards. This multidisciplinary investigation of the martyrdom examines the accuracy of …

Mormon Land Rights In Caldwell And Daviess Counties And The Mormon Conflict Of 1838: New Findings And New Understandings, Jeffrey N. Walker
Mormon Land Rights In Caldwell And Daviess Counties And The Mormon Conflict Of 1838: New Findings And New Understandings, Jeffrey N. Walker
BYU Studies
Jeffrey N. Walker explains how Missouri persecutors in Daviess County profited from driving Mormons off the lands they had settled. In 1830, laws allowed squatters the first opportunity to buy land they had improved after the land was surveyed. If squatters did not make the payment deadline, other interested parties could buy the improved land at unimproved prices. Walker argues that some Missourians were motivated by greed in cleverly orchestrating the timing of their persecutions. The Extermination Order given by Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs and the siege of Far West occurred at the same time the Mormons' land payments were …
What Hymns Early Mormons Sang And How They Sang Them, Michael Hicks
What Hymns Early Mormons Sang And How They Sang Them, Michael Hicks
BYU Studies
Hymns reveal a denomination's minds and hearts, but not every published hymn is sung frequently—or at all. Hicks claims that to understand early Mormon thought and belief, one must not only study published Mormon hymnals but also consider which hymns were favored by congregations. He examines the few meeting notes that exist as well as over two hundred Saints' diaries to get a small sample of what hymns Mormons sang. Among the favorites were "The Spirit of God" and "Adam-ondi-Ahman." Hicks also discusses the kinds of hymns sung in home devotionals and other informal meetings and the way Mormon congregations …

On Bergson’S Concept Of The Virtual, Brian Hulse
Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic
The purpose of this essay has been to come to a better understanding of Bergson’s concept of the virtual, particularly as it is developed and understood by Deleuze, to argue that a precedent exists for the virtual as a valid analytic category, and to suggest a possible avenue of further research.
