A Non-Circadian Role For Clock-Genes In Sleep Homeostasis: A Strain Comparison, Paul Franken, Ryan Thomason, H. Craig Heller, Bruce F. O'Hara
A Non-Circadian Role For Clock-Genes In Sleep Homeostasis: A Strain Comparison, Paul Franken, Ryan Thomason, H. Craig Heller, Bruce F. O'Hara
Biology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that the expression of circadian clock-genes increases in the cerebral cortex after sleep deprivation (SD) and that the sleep rebound following SD is attenuated in mice deficient for one or more clock-genes. We hypothesized that besides generating circadian rhythms, clock-genes also play a role in the homeostatic regulation of sleep. Here we follow the time course of the forebrain changes in the expression of the clock-genes period (per)-1, per2, and of the clock-controlled gene albumin D-binding protein (dbp) during a 6 h SD and subsequent recovery sleep in three inbred strains of mice for which …

Success Factors Of Women Who Have Achieved Positions Of Command In Law Enforcement, Karin Montejo
Success Factors Of Women Who Have Achieved Positions Of Command In Law Enforcement, Karin Montejo
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Women in law enforcement have increased their numbers in entry level and mid-management positions during the past 25 years. However, they have not found parity with their male counterparts in attaining positions of top command and are still notably under-represented. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey of women in law enforcement who have attained at least one supervisory rank. The study participants provided responses to a series of questions identifying their investment in human capital, and whether it impacted their promotional opportunities. Human capital theory addresses individual investment in targeted areas of types of assignments, training, education …

We present the results of a search for new particles that lead to a Z boson plus jets in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). A data sample with a luminosity of 1.06fb-1 collected using Z boson decays to ee and μμ is used. We describe a completely data-based method to predict the dominant background from standard model Z+jet events. This method can be similarly applied to other analyses requiring background predictions in multijet environments, as shown when validating the method by predicting the background from W+jets in tt̄ production. No significant excess above …

Optical Dilution And Feedback Cooling Of A Gram-Scale Oscillator To 6.9 Mk, Thomas Corbitt, Christopher Wipf, Timothy Bodiya, David Ottaway, Daniel Sigg, Nicolas Smith, Stanley Whitcomb, Nergis Mavalvala
Faculty Publications
We report on the use of a radiation pressure induced restoring force, the optical spring effect, to optically dilute the mechanical damping of a 1 g suspended mirror, which is then cooled by active feedback (cold damping). Optical dilution relaxes the limit on cooling imposed by mechanical losses, allowing the oscillator mode to reach a minimum temperature of 6.9 mK, a factor of ∼40000 below the environmental temperature. A further advantage of the optical spring effect is that it can increase the number of oscillations before decoherence by several orders of magnitude. In the present experiment we infer an increase …

High-spin states of 191, 193Au and 192Pt have been populated in the 186W(11B, xn) and 186W(11B, p4n) reactions, respectively, at a beam energy of 68 MeV and their γ decay was studied using the YRAST Ball detector array at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. The level scheme of 193Au has been extended up to Iπ = 55/2+. New transitions were observed also in 191Au and 192Pt. Particle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (PTR) and Total Routhian Surface (TRS) calculations were performed to determine the equilibrium deformations of the …
