Visualizing Morphometric Data Of Vasculatures, Thomas Wischgoll Oct 2007

Visualizing Morphometric Data Of Vasculatures, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Volume visualization is a common, very well-established visualization technique for volumetric data sets. Numerous advancements have been proposed and sophisticated improvements have been implemented to produce elaborated renderings that are capable of enhancing details within the volume. However, volume visualization alone is often not sufficient for the application domain. Often times, researchers are interested in accurate measurements extracted from volumetric data to gain further insight of the specimen. These extracted measurements can then be used to generate and visualize a geometric reconstruction of the specimen. The visualization can incorporate additional tools that allow researchers to determine additional measurements of the …

We searched for an anisotropic background of gravitational waves using data from the LIGO S4 science run and a method that is optimized for point sources. This is appropriate if, for example, the gravitational wave background is dominated by a small number of distinct astrophysical sources. No signal was seen. Upper limit maps were produced assuming two different power laws for the source strain power spectrum. For an f-3 power law and using the 50 Hz to 1.8 kHz band the upper limits on the source strain power spectrum vary between 1.2×10-48Hz-1 (100Hz/f)3 and 1.2×10-47Hz-1 (100Hz/f)3, depending on the position …

to turducken (turduckens, turduckening, turduckened, turduckened) [math.]: To stuff a black hole. We analyze and apply an alternative to black hole excision based on smoothing the interior of black holes with arbitrary initial data, and solving the vacuum Einstein evolution equations everywhere. By deriving the constraint propagation system for our hyperbolic formulation of the BSSN evolution system we rigorously prove that the constraints propagate causally and so any constraint violations introduced inside the black holes cannot affect the exterior spacetime. We present evolutions of Cook-Pfeiffer binary black hole initial configurations showing that these techniques appear to work robustly for generic …

Relationships Between Fluid Composition And Rheology In Ecologites From The Eastern Alps, Jane Selverstone Oct 2007

Relationships Between Fluid Composition And Rheology In Ecologites From The Eastern Alps, Jane Selverstone

Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Finely banded, dolomite-rich mafic eclogites from the Tauern Window equilibrated at >2 GPa/600-650\xb0C. Previous work (Selverstone et al. 1992; Getty & Selverstone, 1994) showed that: a(H2O) varied from ~0.2 to 0.9 across layers at peak pressure; \u03b418O of dolomite varied by up to 1.0 per mil between layers; \u03b418O data reflect modal abundance of dolomite, which also controlled a(H2O); and there is little to no change in a(H2O) or \u03b418O along layers, despite large changes across layers. These data indicate that the rocks acted as a closed system during high-P metamorphism, with little to no fluid communication across layers only …

Dynamics Of Step-Climing With Deformable Wheels And Applications For Mobile Robotics, Alexander Wilhelm, William Melek, Jan Huissoon, Christopher M. Clark, Gerd Hirzinger, Norbert Sporer, Matthias Fuchs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Wheeled-mobile robots operating in human environments typically encounter small steps. Surmounting steps is normally not considered when determining peak torque needs, yet it can be the maximum requirement. This work looks at the statics and dynamics of this situation to determine the necessary peak torque. It finds that using a dynamic model that includes the wheel elasticity is essential for properly representing a real-world tire. When torque is increased using a step function, energy is stored in the tire-higher tire elasticity eases climbing. Knowledge of this phenomenon could facilitate the use of smaller actuators. The model is numerically integrated and …

The g factor of the 2+1 state of 170Hf was measured by perturbed γ-γ angular correlation in a static external magnetic field. The result, g(2+1) = 0.28(5), extends the systematics of g factors of even-even Hf isotopes to N = 98 and enables a better test of theoretical models. The g(2+1) experimental values of these isotopes exhibit a remarkable constancy as a function of neutron number. This phenomenon, which was also observed for other isotopic chains in the Gd–W range, is explained in terms of a recently proposed empirical …
