Multiple Mixed-Type Attractors In A Competition Model, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson, Chantel C. Blackburn Jan 2007

Multiple Mixed-Type Attractors In A Competition Model, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson, Chantel C. Blackburn

Faculty Publications

We show that a discrete-time, two-species competition model with Ricker (exponential) nonlinearities can exhibit multiple mixed-type attractors. By this is meant dynamic scenarios in which there are simultaneously present both coexistence attractors (in which both species are present) and exclusion attractors (in which one species is absent). Recent studies have investigated the inclusion of life-cycle stages in competition models as a casual mechanism for the existence of these kinds of multiple attractors. In this paper we investigate the role of nonlinearities in competition models without life-cycle stages. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Are Botanists Becoming The Dinosaurs Of Biology In The 21st Century?, Dennis W. Woodland

Faculty Publications

The number of botany students, botany classes, botany departments in universities and botanists attending conventions has been declining over many years in North America. This is part of a general trend throughout the field of organismal biology, not just botany. The history leading up to the situation today in North America, is discussed and reasons are given for this trend over the last century of time. Seven ways to keep botany a viable occupation are discussed otherwise botany, in the 21st century, may go the way of the dinosaur. © 2007.

Australian youth engage in behaviour that threatens their health and wellbeing. National surveys report that about a third of young Australians have tried an illicit drug. High rates of substance use and risky sexual behaviour among young Australians suggest that effective prevention efforts based on empirical evidence need to be expanded. Church-associated organisations are an untapped resource that could be used to improve the health and welfare of young people. We describe eight evidence-based elements to consider in designing strategies to prevent high-risk behaviour in young people.

Scripting Trainer Role Play For Use In Sp Case Training, Maclean Zehler Jan 2007

Scripting Trainer Role Play For Use In Sp Case Training, Maclean Zehler

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

The Scripted Role Play' is a tool to standardize trainer role play (as the student) interviewing the SP for the purpose of evaluating SP performance accuracy and checklisting reliability. The trainer's 'script' contains the 'student's' interview questions, expected answers and guidelines for the trainer within the role play. This helps the trainer evaluate the SP's grasp of the case details and observation skills through the role play, itself, as well as ensuing checklisting and discussion. The script allows the trainer to control the flow and process of the role play through interview questions which emphasize or ignore particular details, designating …

How To Know What Your Standardized Patient Program Activities Cost, Nancy Sinclair Jan 2007

How To Know What Your Standardized Patient Program Activities Cost, Nancy Sinclair

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

Standardized Patient programs receive many requests to create performance assessments or supply standardized patients for a variety of educational activities. Estimating the cost can be both daunting and time consuming. However, accurate expense estimates create opportunities for revenue and support budget requests for programmatic development and expansion. Building on the work of others (Hodges), the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNMSOM) Assessment & Learning program has crafted a comprehensive method for estimating expenses that captures both programmatic costs (staff time) and the direct costs of standardized patient salaries and materials.

Higher Power: Strategic Capacity For State And National Organizing, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter studies an organizing effort of the PICO National Network, which organizes in poor, working-class, and middle-class neighborhoods in the United States, mostly in urban areas. PICO engages in faith-based community organizing to generate democratic pressure to advance the interests of its nonelite, highly multiracial participants. The research reported here goes beyond other studies of grassroots organizing through its focus on efforts to influence policymaking on health care, public safety, education, immigrant rights, and housing at the state and national levels.'
