Devotion And The Political: Sermon And Devotional Literature In The Reigns Of Henri Iv And Louis Xiii, 1598–1643, Jason Sager

This thesis examines the part played by French sermon and devotional literature during the reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII in providing a model of political and social order. Shortly after the end of the Wars of Religion the French clergy in the seventeenth century rejected the violent rhetoric of the panic preachers of the sixteenth century. These seventeenth-century preachers emphasized social and political obedience as part of the duty of the Christian. Through collaboration with the crown, the ecclesiastical estate was able to assist in the pacification of French society.

The work's central question is how technological designs affect the political power of individuals. This discussion supplements claims that more democratic control over the design and deployment of technology is necessary; it does so by showing how the general tendency toward parametric designs creates technological delegates: artifacts to which we inadvertently delegate our political powers. "Delegation" in this sense is the central theme. It is developed in the context of recent philosophy and sociology of technology, as well as ecofeminism and the existentialism of Gabriel Marcel and Martin Heidegger. A comparison of two approaches to academic writing and research pedagogies demonstrates that, for Vyhmeister, truth is to be found outside and above us--it is a process of discovery, while Hamilton's approach focuses on the spiritual formation of the writer and can be understood as reflecting a process of spiritual growth. A third approach, which I develop in this article, views academic writing and theological inquiry as a ministry, in which the writer is served by and, in turn, serves the community of faith for the purpose of building a corporate knowledge of God. Locating The Bard: Adaptation And Authority In Michael Radford's The Merchant Of Venice

Michael Radford’s adaptation of The Merchant of Venice (2004) starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons returns feature film Shakespeare to period setting and costuming after roughly a decade of radicalized adaptative strategies such as those of Baz Luhrmann, Michael Almereyda, and Julie Taymor, strategies that threatened to overshadow the Kenneth Branagh approach to Shakespeare’s textual and cultural authority. Radford underscores this return to “authentic” Shakespeare with a heavy directorial hand that begins the film with superimposed text recounting the sixteenth-century Venetian context of the original play setting. Problem. The Iron Age I site on Mt. Ebal, discovered in 1980 by Adam Zertal and excavated between 1982 and 1989, has remained largely unknown by both the scholarly community and the public. No scholarly congress or colloquium has ever been held regarding the Mt. Ebal excavations. The Mt. Ebal excavations, however, may have important implications for reconstructing Israelite origins. This present study investigates the Mt. Ebal excavationand its results.

This thesis investigates the factors which are suggested to affect perceptions of genetically modified (GM) foods. It first tests the extent to which the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and perceived `outrage' are able to predict intentions towards buying GM foods using linear regression. It then focuses on how GM label design characteristics and linguistic variations influence perceptions of GM foods including measures of hazard perception and purchase intention using ANOVA repeated measures. The objective of the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20) includes growth. Throughout Christian history, the church has grown. At the same time, qualitative growth enhances quantitative growth. Both are needed in response to the Great Commission. The Seventh-day Adventist Church would benefit from adopting a philosophy that promotes a wholistic growth of the church. This thesis studied such growth and elaborated a strategy for the Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church in Baltimore to reach well-rounded growth.

The baroclinic tidal regime of the fjord Loch Etive (Scotland) is studied. Analysis is performed on the basis of both in situ data and numerical simulations, with the use of a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic fine-resolution model. It was found that the crest of the sill that separates Loch Etive into inner and outer parts is subjected to a supercritical flow regime with maximum Froude numbers in excess of 5. Strong supercritical conditions lead to the formation of flow separation just above the sill's crest. As is inherent to jet-type fjordic systems, this, in turn, leads to a weak nonlinear baroclinic …

In the course of the stratigraphical and palaeontological investigations for the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Oxfordian Stage at Recicliff (near Weymouth) an assemblage of planktic foraminifera has been described. Planktic foraminifera are exceptionally rare in the Jurassic of the United Kingdom and only a few records have been reported in the last few years. At Redcliff, the assemblage is preserved as pyrite steinkerns, but the fauna contains a number of morphotypes which match onto known species from this interval (Globuligerina oxfordiana, Compactogerina stellapolaris) while others have no described species to which they can …

This paper describes how organizational culture affects individual level decision­ making processes in large organizations. This is particularly notable in the effect on the relative communication of qualitative versus quantitative information. Different levels of success in communicating these two kinds of information affect the development of the situated cognition prior to making a particular decision. We present the findings of a qualitative research study of thirteen executive level decision makers representing four Fortune 100 companies from four diverse industries. As collecting societies such as the Copyright Clearance Center have become more powerful, and technologies like cellular phones and the internet have made it possible to purchase digital copies by dialing a number or clicking a mouse, the suggestion is sometimes made that fair use could or should disappear. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a two-subunit methyltransferase (Mtase) encoded by the essential genes TRM6 and TRM61 is responsible for the formation of 1-methyladenosine, a modified nucleoside found at position 58 in tRNA that is critical for the stability of . The crystal structure of the homotetrameric m¹A58 tRNA Mtase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, TrmI, has been solved and was used as a template to build a model of the yeast m¹A58 tRNA Mtase heterotetramer. The title cations (9 and 12) were prepared by dehydration of (3-methyl-2,4-pentadien-1-ol)Fe(CO)₂L⁺ complexes. The structure of the (CO)₂PPh₃-ligated 12 was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Reaction of carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles to (3-methylpentadienyl)Fe(CO)₃⁺ cations 9 and 12 proceeds either via attack at the dienyl terminus to give (3-methyl-1,3Z-diene)iron complexes or via attack at the internal carbon, followed by carbon monoxide insertion and reductive elimination to afford 3-methyl-4-substituted cyclohexenones. Cyclohexenone formation was found to be prevalent for addition of stabilized nucleophiles with strongly dissociated counterions to cation 9 …

Coetzee's violent, anti-apartheid Age of Iron, a novel the Wall Street Journal termed “a fierce pageant of modern South Africa,” is written as a letter by a retired classics professor, Mrs. Curren, to her daughter, who lives in the United States. Mrs. Curren is dying of cancer, and her daughter advises her to come to the United States for treatment. She replies, “I can't afford to die in America. . . . No one can, except Americans.” Dying of cancer has been considered a “hard death” for at least a century, unproven and even quack remedies have been …

In pursuit of fire-retardant materials, vinyl ester resins were combined with commercially available fire retardants at lower loadings than that at which they are usually effective when used alone. The thermal stability and flammability of the various combinations of fire retardants were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimetric analysis. With some combinations, the 50% degradation temperature was improved by about 5-10ºC Different additives affected the flammability to varying extents and some combinations resulted in an enhanced fire retardancy compared to the additives used alone. Helical hexabenzo[4.4.4]propellane (a relative of hexaphenylethane) and its derivatives are synthesized and their structures are established by X-ray crystallography. Isolation and X-ray crystallographic characterization of a robust trication-radical salt of hexamethoxypropellane derivative confirms that its framework is stable toward oxidative (aliphatic) C−C bond cleavage. It is also demonstrated that propellane can be easily brominated at the 4,4‘-positions of the biphenyl linkages for its usage as a molecular platform for the preparation of electroactive materials.
