Thoughts On Var And Cvar, David E. Allen, Robert J. Powell
Thoughts On Var And Cvar, David E. Allen, Robert J. Powell
Research outputs pre 2011
Value at Risk (VaR) is an important issue for banks since its adoption as a primary risk metric in the Basel Accords and the requirement that it is calculated on a daily basis. VaR calculates maximum expected losses over a given time period at a given tolerance level. Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) measures extreme risk. It calculates the risk beyond VaR. Relative industry risk measurement is also very important to Banks in their management of risk, such as for setting risk concentration limits and developing investment and credit policy. This paper examines market Value at Risk (VaR) and Conditional …

Effects Of Experimental Reduction Of Light Availability On The Seagrass Amphibolis Griffithii, P Mackey, Cj Collier, Paul Lavery
Research outputs pre 2011
The response of the meadow-forming seagrass Amphibolis griffithii (Black) den Hartog to light reduction was examined over a 3 mo period and a subsequent 1 mo recovery period. Morphological and physiological variables were measured in meadows subjected to an average reduction in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 88% relative to unshaded controls. Leaf biomass, leaf cluster density and the number of leaves per cluster all declined in shaded plots, and after 3 mo were about 30, 50 and 60% of the controls, respectively. Leaf extension was one-third that of the control plots. Epiphyte biomass in shaded plots was 44% …

Morphological, Growth And Meadow Characteristics Of The Seagrass Posidonia Sinuosa Along A Depth-Related Gradient Of Light Availability, Cj Collier, Paul Lavery, Rj Masini, Pj Ralph
Research outputs pre 2011
Morphological and growth characteristics of the meadow-forming seagrass Posidonia sinuosa (Cambridge et Kuo), were measured along a depth-related gradient of light to infer its response to long-term differences in light availability. Morphometric measurements were carried out at 6 depths between 1.6 and 9.0 m in summer and winter at Cockburn Sound and summer only at Warnbro Sound in south-western Australia. The minimum light requirement for P. sinuosa of 8.5% sub-surface light was among the lower range reported for seagrasses. Its slow growth rate (0.5–1.5 mgdry shoot–1 d–1), relative to similarly sized species, may contribute to the low light requirements of …

A Self-Assessment Tool To Help Learners Develop Teamwork Skills, Mark Mcmahon, Joseph Luca, Christina John
Research outputs pre 2011
Teamwork skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with peers continue to be hailed as essential skills by employers and higher education funding authorities, and many employers require new graduates to demonstrate these skills as part of the selection criteria. How then can we prepare graduates for this employment market that actively assesses teamwork and other generic skills such as communication, problem solving and leadership skills? This paper outlines the self-assessment component of an on-line learning tool designed to help students develop understandings of themselves and their skill levels. These results are used to help select team roles and provide …
Design-Based Research And Doctoral Students: Guidelines For Preparing A Dissertation Proposal, J Herrington, S Mckenney, T Reeves, Ron Oliver
Design-Based Research And Doctoral Students: Guidelines For Preparing A Dissertation Proposal, J Herrington, S Mckenney, T Reeves, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
At first glance, design-based research may appear to be such a long-term and intensive approach to educational inquiry that doctoral students, most of whom expect to complete their Ph.D. degree in 4-5 years, should not attempt to adopt this approach for their doctoral dissertations. In this paper, we argue that design-based research is feasible for doctoral students, and that candidates should be encouraged to engage in it. More specifically, we describe the components of a dissertation proposal or prospectus that utilizes design-based research methods in the context of educational technology research.

Optimal Layout Of Multicast Groups Using Network Embedded Multicast Security In Ad Hoc Sensor Networks, Richard R. Brooks, Brijesh Pillai, Michele C. Weigle, Matthew Pirretti
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper considers the security of sensor network applications. Our approach creates multicast regions that use symmetric key cryptography for communications. Each multicast region contains a single keyserver that is used to perform key management and maintain the integrity of a multicast region. Communications between two multicast regions is performed by nodes that belong to both regions. To ease the network management burden, it is desirable for the networks to self-organize into regions and dynamically select their keyservers. This paper shows how to determine the number of keyservers (k) to use and the size in the number of hops (h) …

Explorations In Metacognition: The Design, Development, And Implementation Of An Online Teamwork Tracking Environment, Mark Mcmahon, Joseph Luca
Research outputs pre 2011
Research shows that both metacognitive and cognitive strategies are needed for successful learning. In this study, an online tool was developed with a view to help students working in teams reflect on their learning strategies through a process of planning, monitoring and evaluation. An evaluation of the tool was administered at the end of the semester that showed the students valued the tool for tracking their teamwork, but weren’t so convinced it help them plan, monitor and evaluate their learning. These results are discussed, and recommendations are made for improvement using a design-based research approach.

Producing Graduates With Essential Generic Skills: A Model For Teaching And Learning, Joseph Luca, Deanna Heal
Research outputs pre 2011
Higher education institutions are under increasing pressure from government, industry and business organizations to equip students with required discipline based skills as well as generic skills. At the same time universities are experiencing cuts in resources and increased competition for student numbers. Within this environment, there is much uncertainty as to how to effectively prepare students for the university/industry nexus. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a teaching and learning model designed with the key aim of helping promote students' employability prospects. The model focuses on providing activities that identify, and help improve students' job-specific and generic skills. In this …

Jamtart: An Online Performance Support System For Project Management, Joseph Luca, Mark Mcmahon
Research outputs pre 2011
The continuing focus on generic skills in higher education and the embedding of graduate attributes into university policy and planning requires a rethink of how such generic skills can be promoted in a holistic and contextual manner. JAMTART is a product that has been developed to address key generic skills processes inherent in the project management of team-based interactive media development. The three main modules of Selfassessment, Team monitoring, and Reporting and reflection are tied closely to the planning, monitoring and evaluation inherent in metacognitive processing. This paper describes the product in the light of this underpinning theory.

Critiquing The School Community: A Qualitative Study Of Children's Conceptualization Of Their School, Julie Ann Pooley, Lauren Breen, Lisbeth T. Pike, Lynne Cohen, Neil M. Drew
Research outputs pre 2011
Schools are traditionally seen as responsible for the educational outcomes of our children. However, schools also play an important role in the development of aspects such as selfefficacy, participation, competence and self-determination. As schools are often run as societies rather than communities, they offer little opportunity for these attributes (selfefficacy, participation, competence and self-determination) to develop. Forty-six children aged from nine to 12 years were interviewed to ascertain their conceptualizations of the school community. The children define their school in terms of people, places for activities and interaction, a place for safety, cooperation, influence and functionality. The responses closely align …

Heat Shock Protein 90: A Potential Therapeutic Target In Leukemic Progenitor And Stem Cells Harboring Mutant Bcr-Abl Resistant To Kinase Inhibitors, C Peng, Dongguang Li, L Shaoguang
Research outputs pre 2011
Development of drug resistance has become a major obstacle for tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and other cancers. The BCR-ABL-T315I mutant does not respond to clinically available TKIs, although some newly developed anti-BCR-ABL-T315I TKIs are now being tested in patients. TKIs transiently inhibit kinase activity of BCR-ABL, but do not reduce the level of the BCR-ABL protein. Elimination of mutant BCR-ABL protein would provide a new therapeutic strategy for treating Ph+ leukemia. We recently showed that inhibition of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) by a novel Hsp90 inhibitor, IPI-504, causes …

Cylindrical Quasi-Cavity Waveguide For Static Wide Angle Pattern Projection, Kaveh Sahba, Kamal Alameh, Clifton Smith, Arie Paap
Research outputs pre 2011
Beam deflection methods such as rotary mirrors and motorized turning optical heads suffer from a variety of electro-mechanical related problems which affect laser scanning performance. These include wobble, jitter, wear, windage and synchronization issues. A novel optical structure consisting of two concentric and cylindrical interfaces with unique optical coating properties for the static projection of a laser spot array over a wide angle is demonstrated. The resulting ray trajectory through the waveguide is modeled using linear equations. Spot size growth is modeled using previously defined ray transfer matrices for tilted optical elements. The model is validated by comparison with experimental …

Research outputs pre 2011
Determining the reliability of a unilateral horizontal drop jump for displacement provided the focus for this research. Eighteen male subjects were required to step off a 20cm box and land on a force plate with one leg and thereafter jump for maximal horizontal displacement on two different days. Dependent variables from the jump assessment included mean and peak vertical (V) and horizontal (H) ground reaction forces (GRF) and impulses, horizontal displacement and contact time. The between-trial variability of all kinematic and kinetic measures was less than 7%. The most consistent measure over both trials was the horizontal displacement jumped (1.2 …

A Gui For The Deaf-Blind: An Additional Concepts Paper, David Veal
Research outputs pre 2011
People with some residual vision though still classified as blind may be able to read on screen patterns presented via a computer program whereby such a pattern can represent a textual character and a presentation of sequences of such patterns can represent words. These patterns can be adjusted to utilize the user’s remaining vision capacity. Previous research has shown that volunteers who where legally classified as blind could read simple sentences via such a system. This system is known as the Dynamic Pattern System (DPS) and is a test bed for research. Although this research involved a single pattern represented …
It Devices And Energy Consumption, David Veal
It Devices And Energy Consumption, David Veal
Research outputs pre 2011
The need for energy conservation has been topical for many years and has gained importance with global warming scenarios and the increasing cost of energy. This paper examines energy consumption of common home IT devices such as routers, voice boxes, PCs and printers with respect to minimising standby power. Another problem of concern in energy usage as related to IT activity is the increasing electrical power consumption levels of data centres, along with data centre cooling problems and the attempts to enhance their energy efficiency. These scenarios illustrate small amounts of energy consumption used by vast numbers of device compared …
Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Acoustic Emission And Transmission Detection Applied To Robotic Nde In Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley
Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Acoustic Emission And Transmission Detection Applied To Robotic Nde In Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs pre 2011
Distributed acoustic emission sensors are used in structural health monitoring (SHM) for the detection of impacts and/or strain, in real time. Secondary damage may result from the initial impact or strain. This damage may include surface pitting, erosion, or cracking. This type of damage may not be detectable by the SHM system, specifically in passive fiber optic based sensing systems. The integration of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) by robots into SHM enables the detection and monitoring of a wider variety of damage. Communicating via acoustic transmissions represents a wireless communications method for use by NDE inspection robots to communicate with an …

Background: Recruiting and retaining GPs for research can prove difficult, and may result in sub-optimal patient participation where GPs are required to recruit patients. Low participation rates may affect the validity of research. This paper describes a multi-faceted approach to maximise participation of GPs and their patients in intervention studies, using an Australian randomised controlled trial of a depression/suicidality management intervention as a case study. The paper aims to outline experiences that may be of interest to others considering engaging GPs and/or their patients in primary care studies. Methods: A case study approach is used to describe strategies for: (a) …

Adaptive Segregation-Based Mac Protocol For Real-Time Multimedia Traffic In Wlans, Hushairi Zen, Daryoush Habibi, Alexander Rassau, Justin Wyatt
Research outputs pre 2011
Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have become very popular both in private and public sectors. Despite the fast expansion of WLANs in various environments, quality of service (QoS) issues for multimedia applications in WLANs are not yet resolved. Multimedia applications contain traffic that are sensitive to delay and jitter and therefore a best-effort protocol such as the legacy IEEE 802.11 is not suitable. The 802.11e protocol provides prioritization and classification of traffic to offer better QoS for real-time services. However, it leaves the design and implementation of many important optimization features to vendors. In this paper we introduce a mechanism …

Providing Qos For Symmetrical Voice/Video Traffic In Wireless Networks, Justin Wyatt, Daryoush Habibi, Iftekhar Ahmad, Hushairi Zen
Research outputs pre 2011
Voice over IP (VoIP) and voice-video over IP (VIoIP) are becoming very popular and widespread. These types of real-time services produce streams that are almost symmetrical in nature. A new token passing media access control (MAC) developed by our group, called wireless token network (WTN), has been designed with QoS guarantees in mind. We have previously shown in our previous paper (2006) that WTN supports a higher number of VoIP clients compared to 802.11e due to its higher channel efficiency. In this paper we show that WTN also provides superior QoS for bidirectional streams such as VIoIP due to a …

Profiling Through A Digital Mobile Device, Lee Fueng Yap, Andrew Jones
Research outputs pre 2011
Mobile digital devices have evolved from telecommunications device to a lifestyle product over the years. These devices are used in all aspects of our daily life. As a result, more information is stored within the devices. Unprotected mobile digital device is susceptible to privacy invasion attack when the device falls into the wrong hand of any unscrupulous third party. The main objective of this paper is to provide an implication analysis on the possible risks of information leakage through digital mobile devices, in the case when users forget to, or choose never to apply any security protection to their devices

Assessing The Format Of The Presentation Of Text In Developing A Reading Strategy Assessment Tool (R-Sat), Sara Gilliam, Joseph P. Magliano, Keith K. Millis, Irwin Levinstein, Chutima Boonthum
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We are constructing a new computerized test of reading comprehension called the Reading Strategy Assessment Tool (R-SAT). R-SAT elicits and analyzes verbal protocols that readers generate in response to questions as they read texts. We examined whether the amount of information available to the reader when reading and answering questions influenced the extent to which R-SAT accounts for comprehension. We found that R-SAT was most predictive of comprehension when the readers did not have access to the text as they answered questions.

Opto-Vlsi-Based Reconfigurable Free Space Optical Interconnects Architecture, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee, I-S Chung
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper presents a short-distance reconfigurable high-speed optical interconnects architecture employing a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) array, Opto-very-large-scale-integrated (Opto-VLSI) processors, and a photodetector (PD) array. The core component of the architecture is the Opto-VLSI processor which can be driven by digital phase steering and multicasting holograms that reconfigure the optical interconnects between the input and output ports. The optical interconnects architecture is experimentally demonstrated at 2.5 Gbps using high-speed 1×3 VCSEL array and 1×3 photoreceiver array in conjunction with two 1×4096 pixel Opto-VLSI processors. The minimisation of the crosstalk between the output ports is achieved by appropriately aligning …

Rerouting Technique For Faster Restoration Of Preempted Calls, Iftekhar Ahmad, Joarder Kamruzzaman, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs pre 2011
In a communication network where resources are shared between instantaneous request (IR) and book-ahead (BA) connections, activation of future BA connections causes preemption of many on-going IR connections upon resource scarcity. A solution to this problem is to reroute the preempted calls via alternative feasible paths, which often does not ensure acceptably low disruption of service. In this paper, a new rerouting strategy is proposed that uses the destination node to initiate the rerouting and thereby reduces the rerouting time, which ultimately improves the service disruption time. Simulations on a widely used network topology suggest that the proposed rerouting scheme …

The substitution composition of two disjoint graphs G1 and G2 is obtained by first removing a vertex x from G2 and then making every vertex in G1 adjacent to all neighbours of x in G2. Let F be a family of graphs defined by a set Z* of forbidden configurations. Giakoumakis [V. Giakoumakis, On the closure of graphs under substitution, Discrete Mathematics 177 (1997) 83–97] proved that F∗, the closure under substitution of F, can be characterized by a set Z∗ of forbidden configurations — the minimal prime extensions of Z. He also …
