Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore Dec 2007

Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

This research demonstrates a method for producing highly conductive Si-implanted n-type aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1-xN) alloys, and represents a comprehensive analysis of the resulting material's electrical and optical properties as a function of Al mole fraction, anneal temperature, anneal time, and implantation dose. Highly conductive alloys are critical to the fabrication of devices operating in deep UV, high-temperature, high-power, and high-frequency environments, and thus this research is significant in regard to the application of such devices. The AlxGa1-xN wafers of this study, with Al concentrations of 10 to 50%, were implanted at …

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin Dec 2007

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin

Theses and Dissertations

Multiagent task assignment problem descriptors do not fully represent the complex interactions in a multiagent domain, and algorithmic solutions vary widely depending on how the domain is represented. This issue is compounded as related research fields contain descriptors that similarly describe multiagent task assignment problems, including complex domain interactions, but generally do not provide the mechanisms needed to solve the multiagent aspect of task assignment. This research presents a unified approach to representing and solving the multiagent task assignment problem for complex problem domains. Ideas central to multiagent task allocation, project scheduling, constraint satisfaction, and coalition formation are combined to …

Nitrogen Fertilization Of Smooth Bromegrass In Interior And Southcentral Alaska, Natalie D. Howard Dec 2007

Nitrogen Fertilization Of Smooth Bromegrass In Interior And Southcentral Alaska, Natalie D. Howard

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Although forage crops occupy the majority of agricultural land in Alaska, best fertilizer management practices to maximize forage yield and quality in Alaska are not well established. The objective of this study was to determine optimum time and rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer applications to produce high yields of high quality forage in interior and Southcentral Alaska from smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermus). Nine N fertilization treatments, differing in rate and time of application, were applied at four sites. Forage samples were harvested twice per season in 1999 and 2000 to obtain yield and quality values. Nitrogen applied at 225 kg …

Analysis Of A Chemically-Bonded Phosphate Ceramic As An Alternative Oilfield Cementing System For Arctic Regions, Nilesh Limaye Dec 2007

Analysis Of A Chemically-Bonded Phosphate Ceramic As An Alternative Oilfield Cementing System For Arctic Regions, Nilesh Limaye

Engineering

Novel chemically bonded phosphate ceramic borehole sealant, i.e. Ceramicrete, has many advantages over conventionally used permafrost cement at Alaska North Slope (ANS). However, in normal field practices when Ceramicrete is mixed with water in blenders, it has a chance of being contaminated with leftover Portland cement. In order to identify the effect of Portland cement contamination, recent tests have been conducted at BJ services in Tomball, TX as well as at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with Ceramicrete formulations proposed by the Argonne National Laboratory. The tests conducted at BJ Services with proposed Ceramicrete formulations and Portland cement contamination have …

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar Dec 2007

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar

Engineering

Viscous oil reservoirs tend to be low-energy, low-gas/oil-ratio systems with high viscosities and are difficult to produce, transport and refine by conventional methods. Some of the commonly considered viscous oil recovery methods include processes such as steam flooding, in-situ combustion and miscible gas injection. The large viscous oil deposits in the ANS cannot be produced entirely by conventional methods like pressure displacement or waterflooding. Other methods such as miscible (gas injection and water alternating gas (WAG) also have limited success. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the techniques for improving the oil recovery for viscous deposits. This method …

Equation Of State Model Development And Compositional Simulation Of Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Gas Injection For The West Sak Heavy Oil, Ganesh G. Morye Dec 2007

Equation Of State Model Development And Compositional Simulation Of Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Gas Injection For The West Sak Heavy Oil, Ganesh G. Morye

Engineering

West Sak oil field, with its very huge reserves of heavy oil, has the potential of supplementing the declining light oil production on the Alaska North Slope. Due to the heavy nature of oil, its phase behavior is very complex. A proper understanding of the phase behavioral changes of the West Sak oil is crucial to design any enhanced oil recovery scheme. Such Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques are essential in the absence of natural drive mechanisms in these reservoirs. For the proper selection of any EOR technique, reservoir simulation studies should prove its viability. Accordingly, a complete phase behavior …

Investigation Of Phase Behavior And Reservoir Fluid Properties In Support Of Enhanced Oil Recovery Of Alaska North Slope (Ans) Viscous Oils, Kaustubh D. Alurkar Dec 2007

Investigation Of Phase Behavior And Reservoir Fluid Properties In Support Of Enhanced Oil Recovery Of Alaska North Slope (Ans) Viscous Oils, Kaustubh D. Alurkar

Engineering

Declining light oil production on Alaska North Slope (ANS) has attracted oil producers to develop viscous oil resources of ANS that range between 20 to 25 billion barrels. These oils are viscous, flow sluggishly in the formations, and are difficult to transport through unconsolidated formations and are hard to produce by conventional methods. Viscous oil recovery entails neatly designed enhanced oil recovery processes and the success of these processes is critically dependent on accurate knowledge of phase behavior and fluid properties of these oils under variety of pressure and temperature conditions. An experimental study was conducted to quantify the phase …

The Plasma Probe was successfully launched into space on a three-stage Black Brant X rocket from Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) on February 14, 2007. The instrument design exploits the rocket's near horizontal trajectory to measure the relative density of the positively …

Tutor Strategies In Face-To-Face And Distance Tutorial Sessions: Tutor And Student Perceptions, Carrie L. Aldrich Dec 2007

Tutor Strategies In Face-To-Face And Distance Tutorial Sessions: Tutor And Student Perceptions, Carrie L. Aldrich

Linguistics

As university populations become increasingly dependent on distance learning and support services for distance learning, writing centers progressively offer services by telephone, email, or virtual worlds in addition to the traditional face-to-face tutorials. The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Writing Center offers a "telephone tutorial" service for students from remote locations who fax their papers to a tutor who then conducts a tutorial session over the telephone. This study investigates tutor strategies in face-to-face and telephone tutorial sessions and tutor and student perceptions of effectiveness. I audio recorded 30 tutorial sessions with five tutors in six sessions each, half in …

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si Dec 2007

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si

Engineering

This thesis addresses the development of a flight-ready telemetry encoder for the Alaska Student Rocket Project (ASRP) sounding rocket payload. The Frame Oriented eXpandable Integrated circuit Encoder-2007 (FOXIE-07) was developed to resolve crosstalk, timing, and thermal issues in the original FOXIE-03 encoder prototype. A pre-modulation low-pass filter was implemented between the encoder and the FM transmitter to minimize undesired sidebands from the transmitted signal. Complete testing of the FOXIE-07 encoder and pre-modulation filter was performed to certify them as flight-ready components for the SRP5 payload launch from Poker Flat Research Range in 2009.

Froth Flotation Characterization And Processing Plant Design For The Platiniferous And Auriferous Marine Sediments Of Southwestern Alaska, Charles Bissue

Engineering

The purpose of this study was to characterize, and investigate the beneficiation of, the platiniferous and auriferous marine sediments of Southwestern Alaska, located near Platinum, Alaska. The majority of placer gold particles are contained in the 50 x 150 mesh size fraction, while the platinum is finer, residing in the 100 x 200 mesh size fraction. Liberated placer gold and placer platinum group metals (PGM) particles are visible to the naked eye and readily observed under a binocular microscope. Preliminary, qualitative microprobe analysis of PGM grains from the flotation concentrate showed grains of nearly pure iridium, isoferroplatinum and Pt-Rh-Ir-Fe-S-As mineralogy. …

Modeling Of Wax Precipitation, Amit Y. Bhangale Dec 2007

Modeling Of Wax Precipitation, Amit Y. Bhangale

Engineering

Due to increasing oil demand, oil companies are moving into deep water and arctic environments for oil production. In these regions, due to lower temperature, wax starts depositing when the temperature in wellbore falls below Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT). This leads to reduced production rates and larger pressure drops. Wax problems in production wells are very costly due to production down time and removal of wax. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the solution to overcome wax deposition. Wax precipitation is one of the most important phenomena in wax deposition, and hence, it needs to be modeled. There are various …

Seismicity And Stresses In The Kantishna Seismic Cluster, Central Alaska, Lea A. Burris Dec 2007

Seismicity And Stresses In The Kantishna Seismic Cluster, Central Alaska, Lea A. Burris

Geosciences

The Kantishna Cluster is an enigmatic and energetic cluster of earthquakes located in central Alaska, just to the northwest of Mt. McKinley Denali and adjacent to the Denali Fault. The Kantishna Cluster has no visible fault traces, and is often speculated to have a connection to the Denali Fault. The Kantishna Cluster is located at a hub of tectonic activity including Bering Block rotation to the west, bookshelf faulting to the northeast, and rotation of southern Alaska due to Pacific plate convergence to the south. The intention of this study was to broaden the knowledge base about the Kantishna Cluster …

The Distribution And Phylogeography Of The Alaska Marmot (Marmota Broweri), Aren M. Gunderson Dec 2007

The Distribution And Phylogeography Of The Alaska Marmot (Marmota Broweri), Aren M. Gunderson

Biological Sciences

The taxonomic and distributional status of the Marmota broweri has been the subject of much debate and confusion since it was first described as a subspecies of the hoary marmot (M caligata). Through a review of all museum specimens, published accounts of this species, field surveys, and the identification of previously unidentified marmot specimens we have determined the current distribution of the Alaska marmot to include the Brooks Range, the Ray Mountains, and the Kokrines Hills of northern Alaska. The Yukon River forms the boundary between the peripatric distributions of M broweri and M caligata in Alaska. Since M broweri …

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi Dec 2007

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi

Biological Sciences

The boreal forest contains large reserves of carbon, and across this region wildfire is a common occurrence. To improve the understanding of how wildfire influences the carbon dynamics of this region, methods were developed to incorporate the spatial and temporal effects of fire into the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM). The historical role of fire on carbon dynamics of the boreal region was evaluated within the context of ecosystem responses to changing atmospheric CO₂ and climate. These results show that the role of historical fire on boreal carbon dynamics resulted in a net carbon sink; however, fire plays a major role …

Doppler Sodar Observations Of The Winds And Structure In The Lower Atmosphere Over Fairbanks, Alaska, Pavan Kumar Kankanala Dec 2007

Doppler Sodar Observations Of The Winds And Structure In The Lower Atmosphere Over Fairbanks, Alaska, Pavan Kumar Kankanala

Atmospheric Sciences

Fairbanks, Alaska (64°49ʹ N, 147°52ʹ W) experiences strong temperature inversions which when combined with the low wind speeds prevailing during the winter cause serious air pollution problems. The SODAR (Sound Detection And Ranging) or acoustic sounder is a very useful instrument for studying the lower atmosphere as it can continuously and reliably measure the vertical profiles of wind speed and direction, vertical motions, turbulence and the thermal structure in the lower part of the troposphere. A Doppler sodar was operated from December 2005 to April 2006 at the National Weather Service site in Fairbanks. The wind observations from the sodar indicate …
