Book Review:The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Louis B. Kuppenheimer Nov 2007

Book Review:The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Louis B. Kuppenheimer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For hundreds of years Switzerland has been recognized as a nation committed to not being involved in military conflicts. However, in WWII it was confronted by the most serious and credible threat to its neutrality since the inception of the policy. To begin with, Switzerland's wartime population of 4,200,000 was outnumbered nearly eighteen to one by its most lethal contiguous neighbor, Germany. When Austria and Italy were thrown in, the ratio jumped to thirty to one. In addition, the Axis powers of Italy and Germany shared over seventy percent of Switzerland's border. And although her industrial production was of the …

Book Review: Churches And The Holocaust: Unholy Teaching, Good Samaritans, And Reconciliation, Joy Laudie

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Yad Vashem was created in 1953 by the Israeli parliament as a memorial to the Holocaust. Since its inception over 21,000 non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis have been singled out as "Righteous Among the Nations." Mordecai Paldiel has been the director of the Department for the Righteous at Yad Vashem for the past twenty-five years. His position has allowed him to monitor the investigations of cases in which men and women are nominated for recognition in saving Jewish lives. The work has opened his eyes to a new aspect of human behavior; caring for …

Reform, Revolution And Confessionalization Some Social Effects Of The Reformation On Church & Society In The Holy Roman Empire, Eric Lopez Nov 2007

Reform, Revolution And Confessionalization Some Social Effects Of The Reformation On Church & Society In The Holy Roman Empire, Eric Lopez

Seminary Masters Theses

In literature about the Reformation it is not always clear what effects Reformation ideas had beyond their theological significance. Recent research on the Reformation and Post-Reformation periods is providing some helpful insights as to how these theological ideas were implemented and led to concrete social effects. This investigation draws on that research in an attempt to track how several of the ideas of the initial reformers had lasting social effects and what some of those effects were. As part of this historical-theological analysis it will be shown how confessionalization was as effect of the Reformation but was also a courier …

Is The Right "Right" About God? An Examination Of The Theology Of The Religious Right In Modern Day Politics, Kiku Huckle Nov 2007

Is The Right "Right" About God? An Examination Of The Theology Of The Religious Right In Modern Day Politics, Kiku Huckle

Seminary Masters Theses

This study examines the Evangelical critique of the Religious Right for veracity, and the position of the Right is then tested for theological soundness. The Evangelical Left is represented by Sojourners Magazine and associates due to its long-lasting position as one of (if not the) main liberal Christian organizations during the two decades reviewed here. The Christian Coalition was chosen to represent the Religious Right during the 1990's as that was its time of great visibility and influence. The Family Research Council stands for the Right in this decade due to its current prominence. The Theological assessment is based upon …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2007-11-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Does Welfare Reform Work In Rural America? A 7-Year Follow-Up, Ann Tickamyer, Debra Henderson, Barry Tadlock Nov 2007

Does Welfare Reform Work In Rural America? A 7-Year Follow-Up, Ann Tickamyer, Debra Henderson, Barry Tadlock

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Even before the advent of welfare reform, studies of low income working and welfare dependent groups showed that low wage working women are worse off than those who combine welfare with other income sources and that most used a wide variety of livelihood strategies. This is especially the case in poor rural settings where work is scarce and additional obstacles to employment such as lack of transportation and childcare are endemic. Data from a selfadministered survey of users of human service agency programs in four counties in a distressed region of Appalachian Ohio in 1999, 2001, and 2005, provide a …

Conjunctive Queries For A Tractable Fragment Of Owl 1.1, Markus Krotzsch, Sebastian Rudolph, Pascal Hitzler Nov 2007

Conjunctive Queries For A Tractable Fragment Of Owl 1.1, Markus Krotzsch, Sebastian Rudolph, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite the success of the Web Ontology Language OWL, the development of expressive means for querying OWL knowledge bases is still an open issue. In this paper, we investigate how a very natural and desirable form of queries-namely conjunctive ones-can be used in conjunction with OWL such that one of the major design criteria of the latter-namely decidability-can be retained. More precisely, we show that querying the tractable fragment EL++ of OWL 1.1 is decidable. We also provide a complexity analysis and show that querying unrestricted EL++ is undecidable.

Understanding N Mass Balance In A Long-Term Production Fields Using Various Tools, Ki-In Kim, David E. Clay, Gregg Carlson, Sharon Clay

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Monitoring long-term impacts of fertilizer N and the fate of N sources in production fields are needed. The objective of this study was to determine total soil N temporal and spatial changes over an 8 year period in a ¼ section. The site was located in east-central South Dakota in a 65-ha field. Crop rotation was corn and soybean. During the study corn was grown for 5 years (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2002) and soybeans were grown for 3 years (1996, 1998, and 2000). Two tillage methods were used; no-till between 1995 and 1999 and strip-till between 2000 and …

Coherence And Consistency Of Investors’ Probability Judgments, David V. Budescu, Ning Du Nov 2007

Coherence And Consistency Of Investors’ Probability Judgments, David V. Budescu, Ning Du

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study investigates the quality of direct probability judgments and quantile estimates with a focus on calibration and consistency. The two response modes use different measures of miscalibration, so it is difficult to directly compare their relative (in)accuracy. We employed a more refined within-subject design in which decision makers (DMs) used both response modes to make judgments about a random sample of stocks accompanied by identical information to facilitate comparison between the two judgment methods. DMs judged the probabilities that the stocks will reach a certain threshold, provided lower and upper bounds of these forecasts, and estimated median, 50%, 70%, …

Closing The Gap: Getting Full Performance From Residential Central Air Conditioners. Task 4.2-Develop New Climate-Sensitive Air Conditioner, Design, Construction, And Testing, Florida Solar Energy Center, Don B. Shirey Iii

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This study evaluated the performance of a prototype air conditioning system. The configuration of the prototype was based on detailed simulation results performed as part of this study. The results of the previously completed simulation indicated that energy-efficient, properly-ventilated homes in humid climates need equipment options or configurations that can provide a modest amount of additional dehumidification capacity while coordinating their operation with conventional cooling and ventilation systems. A prototype air conditioning system was constructed using currently available components and provides a method to independently control sensible (temperature) and latent (moisture) building loads. The prototype system was tested in both …

Culture-Negative Prosthetic Joint Infection, Elie F. Berbari, Camelia Marculescu, Irene Sia, Brian D. Lahr, Arlen D. Hanssen, James M. Steckelberg, Rachel Gullerud, Douglas R. Osmon

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Background. Culture-negative (CN) prosthetic joint infection (PJI) has not been well studied. We performed a retrospective cohort study to define the demographic characteristics and determine the outcome of patients with CN PJI. Methods. All cases of CN total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty infections (using a strict case definition) treated at our institution from January 1990 through December 1999 were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier survival methods were used to determine the cumulative probability of success. Results. Of 897 episodes of PJI during the study period, 60 (7%) occurred in patients for whom this was the initial episode of CN PJI. The …

Combined Remote Sensing And Field Investigations Of Hydrocarbon Trap Analogue Structures: Examples From The Zagros Simply Folded Belt, Iran And The Sawtooth Range, Montana [Abstract], Caroline M. Burberry, David Cannon, John W. Cosgrove, Terry Engelder

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

First paragraph of abstract: Structures that outcrop at the surface in fold-thrust belts are frequently good analogues for hydrocarbon traps in compressional environments. Along-strike changes in structure and geometry have important implications for connectivity and fluid flow throughout the petroleum system, e.g. in the Zagros Simply Folded Belt, Iran, and in a surface reservoir analogue in the Sawtooth Range, Montana.

The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Among many East German Marxists, who had embraced Marxism in the 1930s and opted to live in East Germany after World War II (between the 1950s until the end of the GDR in 1989), was a commitment to the Communist party that was informed by a more nuanced and sophisticated Marxism than what most party bureaucrats were exposed to.

Understanding Differences In Behaviour: The Role Of Mental Models, Knowledge@Smu Nov 2007

Understanding Differences In Behaviour: The Role Of Mental Models, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Why do some people make snap judgements about another person based on a single behaviour, while others make up their minds only after repeated observations in different situations? Singapore Management University psychology professor Jennifer Tong attempts to shed new light on why people entertain different assumptions about the nature of human behaviour in a series of psychological studies with a difference. Her findings have practical implications for interactions in the office and at the personal level. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do Software Development Projects Dispersed Across The Globe Deliver The Goods?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Higher demands on computer systems and networks compel technology companies to assign software development duties across many dispersed centres in the US, India, China and elsewhere. In actual practice, does this distributed development model work well? Singapore Management University information systems professors Narayan Ramasubbu and Rajesh Krishna Balan examined this question in an award-winning paper, “Globally Distributed Software Development Project Performance: An Empirical Analysis,” presented recently at a joint meeting of the European Software Engineering Conference and the ACM SIGSOFT symposium.

A Cosmic Ray Current-Driven Instability In Partially Ionised Media, Brian Reville, John Kirk, Peter Duffy, Stephen O'Sullivan Nov 2007

A Cosmic Ray Current-Driven Instability In Partially Ionised Media, Brian Reville, John Kirk, Peter Duffy, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

We investigate the growth of hydromagnetic waves driven by streaming cosmic rays in the precursor environment of a supernova remnant shock. It is known that transverse waves propagating parallel to the mean magnetic field are unstable to anisotropies in the cosmic ray distribution, and may provide a mechanism to substantially amplify the ambient magnetic field. We quantify the extent to which temperature and ionisation fractions modify this picture. Using a kinetic description of the plasma we derive the dispersion relation for a collisionless thermal plasma with a streaming cosmic ray current. Fluid equations are then used to discuss the effects …
