Feast And Famine: A Statewide Science Serial Collection Assessment Inillinois, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Chew Chiat Naun, Michael Norman, Karen Schmidt

Staff publications, research, and presentations

In 2004, a group of Illinois librarians was awarded a research grant to assess the state of Illinois’ science serial collection. This collection assessment focused on academic libraries in the state, specifically those participating in the Consortium of Academic Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), but also including another 10 academic libraries in the state that do not belong to the consortium. Current serial subscription data were collected through both automated and manual means and the analysis was conducted in conjunction with Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System. Due to cataloging limitations and issues surrounding different ISSNs for print and electronic formats, the …

Economics Of Quality Schooling, Gerald Burke, Phillip Mckenzie Nov 2007

Economics Of Quality Schooling, Gerald Burke, Phillip Mckenzie

Centre for the Economics of Education & Training (CEET)

The case for public expenditure on education is based on its contribution to the good of society over and above the benefits received by the individual educated. These benefits can be economic, the benefits of a larger pool of educated labour that allow for rapid economic development, and social, including the benefits of more committed law abiding citizens and the relief of poverty. Governments around the world have committed themselves to achieving the goals of Education for All (EFA). However, for many countries this is a major challenge. EFA will require substantial improvements in school enrolment rates, school completion rates, …

Effects Of Voluntary Breathing On Force Responses To Electrical Stimulation (Es) Of Finger Extensors : A Pilot Study, Shang Li, W. H. Park, Elizabeth Ikeda, Charles Leonard Nov 2007

Effects Of Voluntary Breathing On Force Responses To Electrical Stimulation (Es) Of Finger Extensors : A Pilot Study, Shang Li, W. H. Park, Elizabeth Ikeda, Charles Leonard

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science Faculty Publications

Voluntary breathing can influence motor functions of non-respiratory skeletal muscles, e.g., finger muscles. The influence was proposed to be mediated by the ventilation-associated enhancement on corticospinal excitability of the finger muscles, possibly including spinal mechanisms. Force responses to electrical stimulation include spinal mechanisms. The purpose was to investigate the potential spinal mechanism mediating the voluntary breathing effects on responses of finger extension forces to electrical stimulation. A single-pulse electrical stimulation of the same intensity was delivered to the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) during voluntary breathing (forced inspiration, IN and force expiration, OUT) and normal breathing (Norm) across various submaximal levels …

Sedimentology Of The Whiteclay Gravel Beds (Ogallala Group) In Northwestern Nebraska, Usa: Structurally Controlled Drainage Promoted By Early Miocene Uplift Of The Black Hills Dome, Christopher R. Fielding, Hannan E. Lagarry, Leigh Anne Lagarry, Bruce E. Bailey, James B. Swinehart

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The newly recognized Whiteclay Gravel Beds (WGB) of the Miocene Ogallala Group crop out as a narrow, discontinuous ribbon of sands and gravels in Dawes and Sheridan Counties, northwestern Nebraska, USA. The WGB are exposed in a series of municipal gravel quarries and natural exposures that define a linear trench in underlying strata at least 20 m deep and up to 300 m wide, with short, southeast-trending reaches separating generally longer east-trending sections. This gravel-filled trench can be recognized from the Nebraska–South Dakota border near Whiteclay, Nebraska southeastward to east of Gordon, Nebraska, a distance of ~ 30 km. The …

The Commandeerer In Chief, Jason Mazzone

Notre Dame Law Review

As Hurricane Katrina demonstrated, federalism can impede the government's ability to plan for and respond to emergencies. Many emergencies transcend federalist divisions of power and responsibility, rendering unclear which level of government should respond. In addition, while emergencies may require a coordinated response by heal, state, and national government, getting different levels of government to work together in times of crises is difficult. Further, even when states and localities call for outside assistance, they tend to resist undue federal interference in their affairs;a national government that lacks experience working with local actors on the ground can find it difficult to …
