Microwave Spectra And Ab Initio Studies Of Ar-Propane And Ne-Propane Complexes: Structure And Dynamics, Karen I. Peterson, David Pullman, Wei Lin, Andrea J. Minei, Stewart E. Novick Nov 2007

Microwave Spectra And Ab Initio Studies Of Ar-Propane And Ne-Propane Complexes: Structure And Dynamics, Karen I. Peterson, David Pullman, Wei Lin, Andrea J. Minei, Stewart E. Novick

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Microwave spectra in the 7-26 MHz region have been measured for the van der Waals complexes, Ar-C H3 C H2 C H3, Ar- C13 H3 C H2 C H3, Ne20 -C H3 C H2 C H3, and Ne22 -C H3 C H2 C H3. Both a - and c -type transitions are observed for the Ar-propane complex. The c -type transitions are much stronger indicating that the small dipole moment of the propane (0.0848 D) is aligned perpendicular to the van der Waals bond axis. While the 42 transition lines observed for the primary argon complex are well fitted to …

Good Is Dead, Jayson Bimber Nov 2007

Good Is Dead, Jayson Bimber

Theses

This thesis focuses on a visual re-representation of tales from the Old Testament, a canon throughout the history of Western art. I place constructed plasticized models within Biblical allegories in order to satirize the representations of the body evident throughout history as well as those present in contemporary media. In the thesis work I seek to bridge a gap between the past and present. I want the images to dwell between the intended moral pedagogy of the Bible and contemporary society’s perceived deviance, by linking historical painting and current digital photography, and between antique ideals of the body and present-day …

Standing Up With The King: A Critical Look At Stephen King's Epic, Jenifer Michelle D'Elia Nov 2007

Standing Up With The King: A Critical Look At Stephen King's Epic, Jenifer Michelle D'Elia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, it is my intention to show how Stephen King transcends genre, creates and maintains a viable Secondary Reality, and treats capably those literary techniques that critics expect of a serious writer. In addition, I will discuss the ways in which King has secured the loyalty of his Constant Reader. The primary means of my analysis will be through a close reading of the "expanded and uncut" version of The Stand, one of the classics in King's arsenal.

I will begin with an overview of the general set-up in the novel---the start in Arnette, Texas, the actions …

Florida Red Tides: Public Perceptions Of Risk, Sara E. Allen Nov 2007

Florida Red Tides: Public Perceptions Of Risk, Sara E. Allen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research integrates the theoretical implications of risk perception, the social amplification of risk, and the role of place-specific contexts, in order to explore the various perceptions surrounding Florida red tides. Florida red tides are a naturally-occurring event, yet most scientists agree that they are increasing in frequency, duration, and severity. This has profound implication for public health, the local economy, and the biological community. While many of the negative impacts are not easily controllable at this time, some of the secondary impacts can be mitigated through individuals' responses. Unfortunately, public perceptions and consequent reactions to red tides have not …

The Efficacy Of Service-Learning As Practical Experiences For Pre-Service Special Education Teachers , Randall S. Dunn, Christopher K. Shon Nov 2007

The Efficacy Of Service-Learning As Practical Experiences For Pre-Service Special Education Teachers , Randall S. Dunn, Christopher K. Shon

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation examines recent research performed on a post-secondary transition program for students with moderate cognitive deficiencies engaged in a community-based collaboratively developed program involving the participation of a public school district, a community college and a university teacher preparation program. The structure of this program follows a service-learning model of engagement as opposed to more traditional internship models. We use this research as a framework for a discussion on potential benefits of a service-learning approach integrated into teacher preparation programs in general and teacher candidates enrolled in these programs in particular. This research informs policy with regard to teacher …

If Larvae Were Smart: A Simple Model For Optimal Settlement Behavior Of Competent Larvae, Robert J. Toonen, Andrew J. Tyre Nov 2007

If Larvae Were Smart: A Simple Model For Optimal Settlement Behavior Of Competent Larvae, Robert J. Toonen, Andrew J. Tyre

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Much research has been done on larval settlement cues. Rather than having simple fixed responses to constant environmental stimuli, it seems likely that settlement decisions made by individual larvae should vary depending on the individual and the conditions under which it encounters that cue. Here, we present a simple stochastic dynamic programming model that explores the conditions under which larvae may maximize their lifetime fitness by accepting lower quality habitat rather than continuing to search for superior habitat. Our model predicts that there is a relatively narrow range of parameter values over which larval selectivity among habitat types changes dramatically …
