Camp: A Common Api For Measuring Performance, Mark Gabel, Michael Haungs Nov 2007

Camp: A Common Api For Measuring Performance, Mark Gabel, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Accurate performance testing of heterogeneous distributed systems, such as those created using GRID technology, requires a consistent method for retrieving system performance data from multiple platforms. This paper presents CAMP: a low-level platform independent performance data API designed for use with distributed testing frameworks.

CAMP is not necessarily tied to the distributed testing task: it provides a simple, low-level interface into operating system performance data that can be used to build complex performance measurement applications. This paper discusses CAMP's functionality and implementation in detail. It also contains a detailed analysis of the API's correctness, performance, and overhead.

Optimization Of The 3 M Tgm Beamline, At Camd, For Constant Initial State Spectroscopy, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Ihor Ketsman, Eizi Morikawa, Zhenjun Wang, Jinke Tang, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The 3 m toroidal grating monochromator (TGM) VUV beamline at CAMD/LSU was realigned to achieve better illumination of the monochromator gratings with the goal of substantially increasing the flux at the higher photon energies. This is partly accomplished through a tilting of the monochromator (by about of 13.5°), with respect to the plane defined by the synchrotron, providing a smaller grazing angle at the initial mirrors. The improved performance of the beamline permits resonant photoemission studies at Gd 4d core threshold without resorting to second order light, which we demonstrate for Gd doped HfO2.

High-Resolution Photoemission Study Of Organic Systems At The Camd 3 M Nim Beamline, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Kevin Morris, Luis G. Rosa, John D. Scott, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The 3 m normal incidence monochromator (NIM) VUV beamline at CAMD was designed for novel high-resolution photoemission experiments. Both solid-state samples and gas phase resolution tests demonstrate that high-resolution photoemission is possible below 10 meV, and vibronic fine structure in the photoemission final state from the crystalline copolymer poly-vinylidene fluoride with trifluoroethylene can be observed: the first direct experimental identification of symmetry dependence in electron–phonon coupling in photoemission from a solid-state system.

Undergraduate Research: Experiences From A Three-Year Project, Peter Schuster, Charles Birdsong Nov 2007

Undergraduate Research: Experiences From A Three-Year Project, Peter Schuster, Charles Birdsong

Mechanical Engineering

There are significant benefits of research for the involved undergraduate student. These include exposure to advanced topics, introduction to research methods, and direct interaction with faculty and other students. Faculty and institutions benefit as well by the increased interaction with students – fresh eyes in research projects, more energized research groups, and more engaged alumni. However, there are some challenges in designing a research program to work primarily with undergraduates. These include the students’ lack of exposure to advanced topics, short tenure on the project, and potentially lower commitment to the results. There are a number of ways to address …

Fuel Reduction Treatment Effects On Semiarid Woodland Ecohydrology, Krista Bonfantine Nov 2007

Fuel Reduction Treatment Effects On Semiarid Woodland Ecohydrology, Krista Bonfantine

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Mechanical fuel reduction projects are finding increasing use to reduce accumulation of biomass in dense forests, to reduce fire danger, and to improve forest health in wildland-urban interface areas. In many projects, biomass resulting from the thinning is chipped and applied as mulch to the treated area in an effort to promote reestablishment of herbaceous cover and as an efficient method of disposal. Changes in overstory composition coupled with the instantaneous introduction of a litter layer may dramatically alter the ecohydrology of these water-limited systems. However, the effects of various fuel reduction techniques on the ecology and hydrology of Southwestern …

Designing And Manufacturing Microelectronic Packages For High-Power Light-Emitting Diodes, Brian Wright, Jianbiao Pan, Richard Savage Nov 2007

Designing And Manufacturing Microelectronic Packages For High-Power Light-Emitting Diodes, Brian Wright, Jianbiao Pan, Richard Savage

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

A new microelectronic package was designed for a high-power light-emitting diode (LED). The objective was to build a package that enables the LED to operate with currents as high as 2 Amps. An innovative thin-film interface has been developed to electrically connect the cathode of the LED die to a 22AWG Cu wire. This thin-film interface is wirebondable and solderable, and consists of three layers: Au, Ni93/V7, and Si. Four 1 mil Au wirebonds, supporting 2A of maximum current, connect the Au thin-film to the LED die cathode. Sn96Ag4 solder is used for connecting the Ni93/V7 thin-film to the 22AWG …
