The supercontinent Pangea dominated our planet from the Permian into the Jurassic. Paleomagnetic reconstructions have been used to estimate the latitudinal position of Pangea during this 100-million-year period. Atmospheric circulation, recorded by eolian sandstones in the southwestern United States, shows a broad sweep of northeasterly winds over their northernmost extent, curving to become northwesterly in the south. This evidence is consistent with paleomagnetic reconstructions of the region straddling the equator in the Early Permian but is at odds with its northward movement to about 20°N by the Early Jurassic. At least one of the following scenarios must be true: the …

Avoiding War And Creating Peace In Kosovo, Matthew J. Gaudet
Avoiding War And Creating Peace In Kosovo, Matthew J. Gaudet
General Engineering
The article presents the author's comments on peace negotiations and the possibility of war regarding the independence of Kosovo from Serbia. According to the author, the Albanians of Kosovo will not refrain from war to free themselves from Serbian rule. He comments that with the ethnic division between the Serbs and the Albanians it is hard to predict whether independence will spark violence or ensure Kosovo's economic growth.

Persistent Near-Bottom Aggregations Of Mesopelagic Animals Along The North Carolina And Virginia Continental Slopes, John V. Gartner Jr., Kenneth J. Sulak, Steve W. Ross, Ann Marie Necaise
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Submersible observations during four missions over the North Carolina and Virginia continental slopes (184–900 m) documented the occurrence of large aggregations of mesopelagic Wshes and macronektonic invertebrates near or on the bottom. Aggregated mesopelagics formed a layer up to tens of meters deep positioned from a few centimeters to 20 m, usually <10 >m, above the substrate. Aggregations were numerically dominated by microvores, notably the myctophid Wsh Ceratoscopelus maderensis and the penaeid shrimp Sergestes arcticus. Consistently present but in relatively lower numbers, were mesopelagic predators, including the paralepidids Notolepis rissoi and Lestidium atlanticum, the eel Nemichthys scolopaceus, the …10>

Index Theorems For Quantum Graphs, S. A. Fulling, P. Kuchment, J. H. Wilson
Faculty Publications
In geometric analysis, an index theorem relates the difference of the numbers of solutions of two differential equations to the topological structure of the manifold or bundle concerned, sometimes using the heat kernels of two higher order differential operators as an intermediary. In this paper, the case of quantum graphs is addressed. A quantum graph is a graph considered as a (singular) one-dimensional variety and equipped with a second-order differential Hamiltonian H (a 'Laplacian') with suitable conditions at vertices. For the case of scale-invariant vertex conditions (i.e. conditions that do not mix the values of functions and of their derivatives), …

Quantum Interferometric Sensors, Kishore T. Kapale, Leo D. Didomenico, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling

Quantum entanglement has the potential to revolutionize the entire field of interferometric sensing by providing many orders of magnitude improvement in interferometer sensitivity. The quantum-entangled particle interferometer approach is very general and applies to many types of interferometers. In particular, without nonlocal entanglement, a generic classical interferometer has a statistical-sampling shot-noise limited sensitivity that scales like 1/√N, where N is the number of particles passing through the interferometer per unit time. However, if carefully prepared quantum correlations are engineered between the particles, then the interferometer sensitivity improves by a factor of √ to scale like I/N, which is the limit …

Bioluminescence In A Complex Coastal Environment: 2. Prediction Of Bioluminescent Source Depth From Spectral Water-Leaving Radiance, Matthew J. Oliver, Mark A. Moline, Curtis D. Mobley, Lydia Sundman, Oscar M.E. Schofield
Biological Sciences
Many bioluminescence observations are made from the ocean's surface. However, the depth of the bioluminescent source is difficult to estimate on the basis of surface observations alone, given the variable light attenuation of unknown concentrations of water column constituents such as phytoplankton, colored dissolved organic matter, and detritus. Part 1 of this paper showed that bioluminescent water-leaving radiance signals are detectable, even in extremely turbid and dynamic coastal waters. Here, in part 2 of this paper, we analyze the water-leaving radiance patterns of bioluminescence modeled by HydroLight 4.2 to determine if the depth of the bioluminescent source can be estimated …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] The Social Implications Of Enjoyment Of Different Types Of Music, Movies, And Television Programming, Alice Hall
Communication and Media Faculty Works
This study investigated how information about an individual’s enjoyment of various genres of music, film, and TV programming could influence an observer’s expectations of that individual. An online survey of young adults found that the influence of information about another person’s genre preferences varied across genres. Enjoyment of some genres, including jazz music, film comedies, and television comedies, tended to raise expectations of the individual, whereas enjoyment of others, including heavy metal music, anime films, and television soap operas, tended to lower them. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to uses and gratifications perspectives as well as …

Compressed Data Structures: Dictionaries And Data-Aware Measures, Ankur Gupta, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffrey Scott Vitter
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose measures for compressed data structures, in which space usage is measured in a data-aware manner. In particular, we consider the fundamental dictionary problem on set data, where the task is to construct a data structure for representing a set S of n items out of a universe U = {0, ..., u - 1} and supporting various queries on S. We use a well-known data-aware measure for set data called gap to bound the space of our data structures. We describe a novel dictionary structure that requires gap + O (n log (u / n) …

Physics
Nighttime water-leaving radiance is a function of the depth-dependent distribution of both the in situ bioluminescence emissions and the absorption and scattering properties of the water. The vertical distributions of these parameters were used as inputs for a modified one-dimensional radiative transfer model to solve for spectral bioluminescence water-leaving radiance from prescribed depths of the water column. Variation in the water-leaving radiance was consistent with local episodic physical forcing events, with tidal forcing, terrestrial runoff, particulate accumulation, and biological responses influencing the shorter timescale dynamics. There was a >90 nm shift in the peak water-leaving radiance from blue (~474 nm) …

Variability In River Temperature, Discharge, And Energy Flux From The Russian Pan‐Arctic Landmass, Richard B. Lammers, Jonathan W. Pundsack, Alexander I. Shiklomanov
Faculty Publications
We introduce a new Arctic river temperature data set covering 20 gauges in 17 unique Arctic Ocean drainage basins in the Russian pan‐Arctic (ART‐Russia). Warm season 10‐day time step data (decades) were collected from Russian archival sources covering a period from 1929 to 2003 with most data falling in the range from the mid‐1930s to the early 1990s. The water temperature data were combined with river discharge data to estimate energy flux for all basins and over the Russian pan‐Arctic as a whole. Tests for trend were carried out for water temperature, river discharge, and energy flux. Spatially coherent significant …
