The Microgeometry Parameters Of Uncoated And Zinc-Coated Cold Rolled Steel Strips, J Bidulská, T Kvačkaj, V Bodák, R Bidulský

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The microgeometry of surface is arithmetically expressed by the arithmetical mean deviation of the profile, Ra and peak count, Pc. Roughening of working rolls was achieved by using the technology EDT (Electric Discharge Texturing) and SBT (Shot Blast Texturing). The paper shows the relationship between the basic microgeometry parameters and the adjustment technology of working rolls. Zinc-coated cold rolled steel strips, uncoated cold rolled steel strips and the Ra, Pc parameters were measured using the tangent profilometer "Hommel Tester T1000". Measurements of Ra and Pc showed the scatter for SBT and EDT rolls, respectively. EDT can provide a considerably greater …

Primary Analysis Of Effective Permeability Of The Flame In Burning Natural Gas, R Jaroslav, R Magdalena Dec 2007

Primary Analysis Of Effective Permeability Of The Flame In Burning Natural Gas, R Jaroslav, R Magdalena

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This paper presents a method of analysis of effective permeability of the flame in burning natural gas. In order to conduct a complex analysis, it is necessary to determine this parameter as a special case of the process of quasi-plasma nature for the purpose of investigating the options for application of suitable industrial methods applied in similar cases. We observed the synergy of solenoid parameters of the plasma part of the flame with ceramic materials without any special additional customization of the measurement device. The processed results of measurement demonstrate additional requirements necessary for measurement technology. The method was applied …

The Voice Transcription Technique: Use Of Voice Recognition Software To Transcribe Digital Interview Data In Qualitative Research, Jennifer L. Matheson

The Qualitative Report

Transcribing interview data is a time-consuming task that most qualitative researchers dislike. Transcribing is even more difficult for people with physical limitations because traditional transcribing requires manual dexterity and the ability to sit at a computer for long stretches of time. Researchers have begun to explore using an automated transcription process using digital recordings and voice recognition software (VRS). While VRS has improved in recent years, it is not yet available to the general public in a format that can recognize more than one recorded voice. This article outlines a strategy used to circumvent this problem and improve the speed …

Linguistic Research Strategies Versus Quantitative Research Strategies--Different Roles, Different Results, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Dec 2007

Linguistic Research Strategies Versus Quantitative Research Strategies--Different Roles, Different Results, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

Selecting a statistical framework for a behavioral study has profoundly different results than does a linguistically framed research strategy. The linguistic strategy overcomes many limitations inherent in statistical strategies and offers more meaningful results. Inferential statistical studies often discuss how the findings “explain” the results of the study. Seldom mentioned is the fact that statistical explanations occur in terms of the framework of statistical methodology. Statistical explanations do not explain anything in terms of the actual behavior at issue and do not lead to subsequent interventions about the motivated choices for a target group. Linguistic strategies work especially well if …

Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology To Investigate How Experienced Practitioners Lear N To Communicate Clinical Reasoning, Rola Ajjawi, Joy Higgs

The Qualitative Report

This paper is primarily targeted at doctoral students and other researchers considering using hermeneutic phenomenology as a research strategy. We present interpretive paradigm research designed to investigate how experienced practitioners learn to communicate their clinical reasoning in professional practice. Twelve experienced physiotherapy practitioners participated in this research. Using hermeneutic phenomenology enabled access to a phenomenon that is often subconscious and provided a means of interpreting participants’ experiences of personal learning journeys. Within the philosophy underpinning hermeneutic phenomenology , researchers need to design a research strategy that flows directly from the research question and goals of the research project. This paper …

Should the independence movement in Taiwan regain political momentum, however, the potential for U.S. military intervention in the Taiwan Strait would increase. Further, the perception of U.S. vulnerability in the region could invite assertiveness. So, despite the fact that armed conflict between the United States and China is in no one’s interest, China’s burgeoning power requires that critical factors in U.S. plans for the defense of Taiwan be examined. This collection of essays offers just such an examination. It looks at China’s growing strength, the strategies underlying U.S. plans for military intervention in the Strait, U.S. vulnerabilities, and options for …

Pruning The Garden Of Successors: Daughters, Sons, And Succession In Family Businesses, Kathyann Kessler Overbeke Dec 2007

Pruning The Garden Of Successors: Daughters, Sons, And Succession In Family Businesses, Kathyann Kessler Overbeke

Student Scholarship

This paper describes selection processes of successors in family businesses with respect to daughters of family business owners. Statistics reveal a paucity of daughters in the ranks of successors. Understanding of this issue might identify beliefs and practices within business owning families that may contribute to the success or failure of transitioning from one generation to the next. A conceptual model was developed based on the decision making process described by The Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985). A qualitative approach was used to investigate this phenomenon allowing for feelings, stories, and reflective thought to emerge and provide insights into …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Accreditation Of Nonprofit Organizations, Lise Anne D. Slatten

Student Scholarship

Several nonprofit umbrella associations have implemented assessment and certification programs intending to produce institutional improvement for member organizations. An analysis of semi-structured interviews guided by institutional theory, reveals factors that differentiate among organizations that chose to participate in one such program (the Louisiana Standards for Excellence organizational assessment) and those that did not. Drawing on organizational learning and accountability literatures, the research investigates the antecedents and consequences of accreditation in nonprofits. Results indicate that, integrity-enhancement, continuous improvement and financial motives drive the decision to seek accreditation, and outcomes of remediation-oriented process improvement initiatives were contingent upon staff commitment.

Betting On Catastrophe: The Private Sector And Anti-Terrorism Spending For Physical Security, James K. Hayes

Student Scholarship

The cost of protecting U.S. private sector critical infrastructure assets is estimated at $10 billion per year. This qualitative research examined the incentives and obstacles for the willing expenditure on terrorism protection by American business, revealing that the implementation of security measures beyond the private sector's day-to-day operational risks have characteristics similar to the private provision of a public good. Notions of moral hazard created by government actions in response to catastrophic events can have an effect that is at odds with encouraging greater private spending in this area. This paper may have important implications for policy-makers looking to address …

What Are They Thinking About R&D? A Strategic Core Competence, Or An Operational Business Decision?, Beth Fitz Gibbon

Student Scholarship

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nineteen senior North American business practitioners in multinational corporations to understand their experiences with strategic planning and resource allocation for R&D. In particular, we sought to elicit insight about where planning and allocation overlap, and how they are executed today, vs. five to ten years ago. Findings indicate the outsourcing of R&D is rapidly increasing. R&D is becoming an operational business function as opposed to an internal investment in key knowledge for future firm sustainability. R&D also appears to no longer be a major focus of the strategic planning effort at the highest management levels. …

The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough Dec 2007

The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Biological traits, the foci of natural selection, are by definition emergent from the genes, proteins, and other “nothing-buts” that constitute them. Moreover, and with the exception of recently emergent “spandrels,” each can be accorded a teleological dimension—each is “for” some purpose conducive to an organism's continuation. Sex, which is “for” the generation of recombinant genomes, may be one of the most ancient and ubiquitous traits in biology. In the course of its evolution, many additional traits, such as gender and nurture, have emerged. Patterns of sexual exchange are the basis for patterns of biological evolution and are central to the …

A Serious Attempt To Frame Stakeholder Theory In Business Management Studies, Saad Ali Al-Anzi Dec 2007

A Serious Attempt To Frame Stakeholder Theory In Business Management Studies, Saad Ali Al-Anzi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This paper distinguishes itself by addressing a subject often avoided due to its inherent complexities: stakeholders as a pivotal theme in strategic thought. It explores their general concepts, classifications, and perspectives, defining stakeholders as independent groups or entities linked to a business organization through a network of influential relationships with diverse dimensions and directions, where any imbalance in these relations could prove detrimental to all parties involved. The paper argues that an appropriate stakeholder classification must be broad in scope, taking into account the specific country’s traditions, laws, customs, and the prevailing administrative style governing its business organizations. Furthermore, while …
