Research Students In The Electronic Age: Impacts Of Changing Information Behavior On Information Literacy Needs, Kirsty Williamson, Vivienne Bernath, Steven Wright, Jen Sullivan

Communications in Information Literacy

Because of the rapid uptake of information and communication technology (ICT), understanding the ways in which information seeking has changed over the past decade is crucial to gaining a picture of how information literacy needs may also be changing in the electronic age. This qualitative research took an interpretivist/ constructivist approach in examining the ways in which access to electronic information-seeking affects the information literacy needs of 15 research students in an Australian university setting. An ethnographic technique, the interview, was used for the data collection. Three particular areas, related to information seeking and use, were selected: (1) information source …

Active Learning With Interactive Whiteboards: A Literature Review And A Case Study For College Freshmen, Robert Schroeder Dec 2007

Active Learning With Interactive Whiteboards: A Literature Review And A Case Study For College Freshmen, Robert Schroeder

Communications in Information Literacy

A well-designed classroom that includes appropriate technology can inspire and support successful instructional design. Interactive whiteboards (IWBs), an example of this technology, have been adopted in Great Britain, primarily in primary and secondary schools. While the literature anecdotally suggests that there are benefits associated with using them in classroom instruction little has been written about their application and efficacy in higher education. The author describes an exercise designed for college freshman, and discusses the benefits of the group work and active assignments engendered by the IWB.

United States Food Law Update: Labeling Controversies, Biotechnology Litigation, And The Safety Of Imported Food, A. Bryan Endres

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This update summarizes significant changes and developments in food law throughout the first half of 2007. Out of necessity, not every change is included; rather, this update is limited to significant changes in national law. This series of updates provides a starting point for scholars, practitioners, food scientists, and policymakers determined to understand the shaping of food law in modern society. Tracing the development of food law through these updates also builds an important historical context for the overall development of the discipline.

Most Caenorhabditis Elegans Micrornas Are Individually Not Essential For Development Or Viability, Eric A. Miska, Ezequiel Alvarez-Saavedra, Allison L. Abbott, Nelson C. Lau, Andrew B. Hellman, Shannon M. Mcgonagle, David P. Bartel, Victor R. Ambros, H. Robert Horvitz Dec 2007

Most Caenorhabditis Elegans Micrornas Are Individually Not Essential For Development Or Viability, Eric A. Miska, Ezequiel Alvarez-Saavedra, Allison L. Abbott, Nelson C. Lau, Andrew B. Hellman, Shannon M. Mcgonagle, David P. Bartel, Victor R. Ambros, H. Robert Horvitz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a large class of short noncoding RNAs found in many plants and animals, often act to post-transcriptionally inhibit gene expression. We report the generation of deletion mutations in 87 miRNA genes in Caenorhabditis elegans, expanding the number of mutated miRNA genes to 95, or 83% of known C. elegans miRNAs. We find that the majority of miRNAs are not essential for the viability or development of C. elegans, and mutations in most miRNA genes do not result in grossly abnormal phenotypes. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that there is significant functional redundancy among miRNAs …

A Trans-Tasman Business Elite?, Nicholas Harrigan, Shaun Goldfinch

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines the close relationship between the Australian and New Zealand business communities to ask whether the relationship is best characterized as simply a bi-lateral trading relationship, or whether there is evidence of the formation of a transnational business community. This article also seeks to explore the nature of Australia—NewZealand integration, and specifically the degree to which the relationship is interdependent or asymmetrical. Data are drawn from quantitative sources — including a dataset developed from the IBISWorld's Largest 2000 Enterprises in Australia and New Zealand, Who's Who in Australia, and Who's Who in Business in Australia — and qualitative …

Global Transformations And “Cosmopolitical” Social Science, Michael D. Kennedy, Camilo Leslie, Allison Nau, Atef Said, Hiro Saito Dec 2007

Global Transformations And “Cosmopolitical” Social Science, Michael D. Kennedy, Camilo Leslie, Allison Nau, Atef Said, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In 2001 Siobán Harlow and Kennedy developed a graduate seminar through the International Institute around “Global Transformations.” While some had used the term before, its greatest advantage was its inclusivity: globalization, twenty-first century empires, international terrorism, the spread of infectious disease, migrations, climate change, and other themes all fit within that rubric. During a recent sociology seminar, we sought to discipline that discussion with the identification of three principal areas to guide “cosmopolitical” social science.

An Investigation On The Corrosion Resistance And Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Ductile Ni-Resist Cast Irons In Desalination Plants., Yahya Abdulla Alzafin Dec 2007

An Investigation On The Corrosion Resistance And Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Ductile Ni-Resist Cast Irons In Desalination Plants., Yahya Abdulla Alzafin

Theses

Two cases of stress corrosion cracking failures of brine pumps casings have been reported. These pumps are installed in two desalination plants located on the coast of Arabian Gulf in UAE. The materials of construction of failed parts are Ni-Resist Ductile Irons (NDI) and the environment is brine, which is concentrated seawater. Two brands of pumps had different lives to total failure; one lived 18 years while the other lasted only 5 years. The failed parts of former pumps were made out of NDI material as per American standard ASTM A439 D2 (designated D material) whereas those of latter pumps …

Preventing Location-Based Identity Inference In Anonymous Spatial Queries, Panos Kalnis, Gabriel Ghinita, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias Dec 2007

Preventing Location-Based Identity Inference In Anonymous Spatial Queries, Panos Kalnis, Gabriel Ghinita, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The increasing trend of embedding positioning capabilities (for example, GPS) in mobile devices facilitates the widespread use of location-based services. For such applications to succeed, privacy and confidentiality are essential. Existing privacy-enhancing techniques rely on encryption to safeguard communication channels, and on pseudonyms to protect user identities. Nevertheless, the query contents may disclose the physical location of the user. In this paper, we present a framework for preventing location-based identity inference of users who issue spatial queries to location-based services. We propose transformations based on the well-established K-anonymity concept to compute exact answers for range and nearest neighbor search, without …

Tuning Tabu Search Strategies Via Visual Diagnosis, Steven Halim, Hoong Chuin Lau Dec 2007

Tuning Tabu Search Strategies Via Visual Diagnosis, Steven Halim, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While designing working metaheuristics can be straightforward, tuning them to solve the underlying combinatorial optimization problem well can be tricky. Several tuning methods have been proposed but they do not address the new aspect of our proposed classification of the metaheuristic tuning problem: tuning search strategies. We propose a tuning methodology based on Visual Diagnosis and a generic tool called Visualizer for Metaheuristics Development Framework(V-MDF) to address specifically the problem of tuning search (particularly Tabu Search) strategies. Under V-MDF, we propose the use of a Distance Radar visualizer where the human and computer can collaborate to diagnose the occurrence of …

Location Update Versus Paging Trade-Off In Cellular Networks: An Approach Based On Vector Quantization, Abhishek Roy, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das Dec 2007

Location Update Versus Paging Trade-Off In Cellular Networks: An Approach Based On Vector Quantization, Abhishek Roy, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we propose two information-theoretic techniques for efficiently trading off the location update and paging costs associated with mobility management in wireless cellular networks. Previous approaches attempt to always accurately convey a mobile's movement sequence and hence, cannot reduce the signaling cost below the entropy bound. Our proposed techniques, however, exploit rate-distortion theory to arbitrarily reduce the update cost, at the expense of an increase in the corresponding paging overhead. To this end, we describe two location tracking algorithms, based on spatial quantization and temporal quantization, which first quantize the movement sequence into a smaller set of codewords, …

Competition In Modular Clusters, Carliss Y. Baldwin, C. Jason Woodard Dec 2007

Competition In Modular Clusters, Carliss Y. Baldwin, C. Jason Woodard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The last twenty years have witnessed the rise of disaggregated “clusters,” “networks,” or “ecosystems” of firms. In these clusters the activities of R&D, product design, production, distribution, and system integration may be split up among hundreds or even thousands of firms. Different firms will design and produce the different components of a complex artifact (like the processor, peripherals, and software of a computer system), and different firms will specialize in different stages of a complex production process. This paper considers the pricing behavior and profitability of these so-called modular clusters. In particular, we investigate a possibility hinted at in prior …

An Empirical Analysis Of Mobile Voice Service And Sms: A Structural Model, Youngsoo Kim, William B. Vogt, Ramayya Krishnan, Rahul Telang Dec 2007

An Empirical Analysis Of Mobile Voice Service And Sms: A Structural Model, Youngsoo Kim, William B. Vogt, Ramayya Krishnan, Rahul Telang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In addition to the wireless telephony boom, a similar exponential increasing trend in wireless data service - short message service (SMS) - is visible as technology advances. We develop a structural model to understand how mobile users behave, especially how they consume voice, and services. Specifically, we measure the own- and the cross-price elasticities of these services. The cross-price elasticity is of significant importance because marketing activities are critically influenced by whether the goods are substitutes or complements. The research context poses significant econometric challenges due to three-part tariff, sequential discrete plan choice and continuous quantity choices. Using detailed individual …

Coordinating Student Experiences In The Health Care Setting - A Design For Efficient And Effective Learning, Communication And Patient Care, Mary Amundson

Theses and Dissertations

Clinical courses are an essential part of the curriculum for any major involving health care careers. These courses provide the health care student the opportunity to transition from the classroom to the health care environment prior to graduation through guided practice in the provision of patient care. Clinical experiences leave the student with a greater understanding of wellness as well as the pathophysiology of disease, recognition of the relationship between interventions and outcomes, realization of the interplay of culture, spirituality and emotional status with the physical response of the body and provide the student with the ability to provide care …

Community Breastfeeding Attitudes And Beliefs, Patty Ryan Vari Dec 2007

Community Breastfeeding Attitudes And Beliefs, Patty Ryan Vari

Theses and Dissertations

Breastmilk is designed by nature to meet the specific needs of the human species and provides all that is necessary for normal infant growth, development, and health for the first six months of life. Efforts to extend that message publicly have resulted in an increase of breastfeeding rates, yet still have not reached the goals of Healthy People 2010. This paper adds to the body of breastfeeding literature to understand why some women breastfeed and others do not by exploring some of the individual characteristics of a Midwestern university community, including their breastfeeding and bottle feeding (formula) beliefs, attitudes, and …

The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster Dec 2007

The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The current study examined the MMPI-2's Restructured Clinical Scale 3 (RC3) measuring cynicism from the Tellegen et al. (2003) Restructured Clinical Scales project. While RC3 has shown adequate reliability coefficients, research investigating RC3 has questioned its validity and descriptive abilities. Research suggests that adequate criterion has not been established for the scale. RC3 in this study was correlated with three types of social support: Proactive Coping, Instrumental Support Seeking, and Emotional Support Seeking. Based on a review of the literature of cynicism and social support, it was hypothesized that a negative relationship would exist between the two constructs. The study …

Woody Encroachment In North Dakota Grasslands: Using Predictive Modeling To Examine Key Players And Management Implications, Leigh A. Ciofani Dec 2007

Woody Encroachment In North Dakota Grasslands: Using Predictive Modeling To Examine Key Players And Management Implications, Leigh A. Ciofani

Theses and Dissertations

Woody shrub encroachment is one of the major threats to grasslands, closely connected to other issues such as fire regimes, herbivore grazing patterns, and climate change, and is currently a global trend. Consequences of shrub encroachment can significantly impact many of the ecological characteristics of grasslands, including grassland biogeochemistry and resource availability and biodiversity. Studies conducted on grassland ecosystems have pointed to grassland management, in the form of prescribed burning, grazing, or some combination of the two, as a way to prevent woody encroachment. Prevention of woody encroachment may be particularly important to preserving grasslands, as management may not be …

Using Non-Fiction Conventions To Improve Expository Reading In 6* Grade History, Annie Whitlock Dec 2007

Using Non-Fiction Conventions To Improve Expository Reading In 6* Grade History, Annie Whitlock

Masters Theses

Students often have very little experience with textbooks before they reach the middle and upper grades. Teachers of content areas in these grades also have very little resources available to help these students. In this study, a curriculum was developed to teach specific non-fiction conventions to 6th grade students in a history classroom. The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that this developed curriculum would positively impact these students’ abilities to use non-fiction conventions while reading their textbook. The results of the study revealed that after being taught the developed curriculum, the students made improvements and showed …

Quality In The Red River Basin: An Analysis Of Subsurface Drainage, Janet L. Crossland Dec 2007

Quality In The Red River Basin: An Analysis Of Subsurface Drainage, Janet L. Crossland

Theses and Dissertations

The use of subsurface (tile) drainage on poorly drained fields is not a new concept. In fact, farmers in the Midwest have been using it for more than 150 years to remove excess water from saturated fields to increase crop productivity in the Midwest (Cooke, Badiger, and Garcia, 2000). Unfortunately little research has been done regarding tile drainage in North Dakota's Red River Valley (RRV) or how it will affect the surrounding water bodies.

Because of snowmelt or increased rainfall in the summer, the RRV regularly floods in the spring. Prolonged water on the surface can hinder germination as well …

A Comparison Of A Scorecard Systems To Determine Supplier Efficency, Santosh Noone Dec 2007

A Comparison Of A Scorecard Systems To Determine Supplier Efficency, Santosh Noone

Theses and Dissertations

The new trends of global competition, heightened customer expectations, and harsh economic conditions suggest that future competitiveness will be determined by a company's ability to develop strategies to optimally align and manage an extended network of supplier relationships. To remain in competition every company needs to attract and retain high-caliber suppliers. To accomplish this, firms must accurately evaluate vendor performance and must work with their suppliers to improve areas of weakness.

Scorecards are the matrix system that is used by most companies today to evaluate their supply base. These matrix systems evaluate the suppliers based on various performance factors and …
