A Practical Guideline For Establishing Non-Return Valve Specification And Performance Criteria, Eric W. Dawkins
A Practical Guideline For Establishing Non-Return Valve Specification And Performance Criteria, Eric W. Dawkins
Masters Theses
The non-return valve has been a standard piece of equipment in the injection molding industry since the reciprocating screw was developed. Most molders understand the role of the non-return valve in the molding process. But few understand the functional problems of the non-return valve. Because of this, the non-return valve has been considered a nuisance item for injection molders.
Wear of the non-return valve is another problem that molders are faced with. The factors contributing toward wear are not entirely understood. Material, temperatures, hours and machine size, etc., all effect the life of a valve. Consequently, most worn valves are …
The Empire Of Illness: Competence And Coercion In Health-Care Decision Making, Marsha Garrison
The Empire Of Illness: Competence And Coercion In Health-Care Decision Making, Marsha Garrison
William & Mary Law Review
The law's willingness to take account of factors that interfere with volition tends to vary in accordance with its underlying goals. The law of wills is dominated by the principle of freedom of testation; it has thus developed doctrines aimed at detecting coercive influences that interfere with the testator's free agency. The law of medical decision making, dominated by the analogous principle of patient autonomy, has not developed doctrines aimed at detecting coercive influences despite a large and growing body of evidence showing that disordered insight and major depression, two common medical conditions, often have a coercive, negative effect on …

Delivery Outcomes At Term After One Previous Cesarean Section, Tarik Y. Yamani-Zamzami
Delivery Outcomes At Term After One Previous Cesarean Section, Tarik Y. Yamani-Zamzami
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To determine the maternal and perinatal outcomes at term in women with one previous cesarean delivery and with no history of vaginal birth. METHODS: This is a case-control study conducted at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2002. One hundred sixty-two women with one previous cesarean delivery and with no previous vaginal birth were compared with 324 control women. RESULTS: The cesarean section rate was higher in the study group 40 (24.7%) versus 23 (7.1%) in the control group and was statistically significant (p<0.001). Seventeen (10.5%) were induced with prostaglandin E2, and 33 (20.4%) required labor augmentation with oxytocin in the study, versus 22 (6.8%) and 21 (6.5%) in the control group. The duration of labor was longer in the study women compared to the control group (7.6 ± 3.0 hours versus 6.0 ± 2.3 hours), and this was statistically significant (p<0.001). There was one uterine dehiscence, and 2 uterine ruptures in the study women, and none in the control group. Eight (1.65%) women had postpartum hemorrhage, 3 (0.62%) needed blood transfusion, and 7 (1.44%) developed postpartum pyrexia. CONCLUSION: Women with no a prior history of vaginal delivery are considered less favorable, the vaginal birth after cesarean section success rate may be even lower if the indication for previous primary cesarean delivery was failure to progress, and may be associated with increased risk of uterine rupture. Further study is required to confirm our findings.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the prevalence of consanguinity in each region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia including the variation in prevalence between urban and rural settlements. METHODS: The study was conducted over 2 years (2004-2005). A cross-sectional sample determined by multistage random probability sampling of Saudi households from each of the 13 regions of the Kingdom. As part of survey questionnaire, the mother of each household was asked on the relationship to her husband to choose one of 3 answers: first-degree cousin, more distant relationship, or no relation. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of consanguinity was 56% with the first-degree …

Minimally Invasive Retroperitoneal Adrenalectomy, Hussam M. Binyousef, Mohammed A. Al-Zaben, Essam M. Murshid, Mona A. Al-Shahid
Saudi Medical Journal
The minimally invasive MI approach has become the gold standard in removing the adrenal gland. Both transperitoneal and retroperitoneal techniques were reported safe and effective. The retroperitoneal approach has the advantage of direct access to the gland, easy access to retrocaval tumors, carries no cardiovascular or pulmonary risk of carbon dioxide insufflation to a high intra-abdominal pressure, and is not affected by previous abdominal surgery or radiation. We report a case of MI retroperitoneal adrenalectomy for right adrenal incidentaloma in a recently diagnosed breast cancer patient with multiple medical problems, and emphasize the advantage of this approach over the MI …

Executive Functioning And Memory Performance In Adhd And Asperger's Syndrome, Kristi A. Walen
Theses and Dissertations
The diagnosis of ADHD requires the exclusionary criteria for any Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), making it impossible to have comorbid disorders. This study investigated executive function and memory differences between 11 children with Asperger’s syndrome, 13 children with ADHD, and 36 controls, all ranging in age from 7-16 years. Executive function was assessed using Conner’s Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST), Tower of London Task (TOL), Trail Making Test, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF), Grooved Pegboard Test, and the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT). Memory was assessed using a subtest from the Wide Range Assessment of Memory …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Pharmaceutical Concentrations And Chitobiase Activity In The Upper Tennessee River, Justin M. Conley
Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Pharmaceutical Concentrations And Chitobiase Activity In The Upper Tennessee River, Justin M. Conley
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Tennessee currently has the 3rd highest per capita prescription drug usage rate in the United States, yet no published studies have analyzed Tennessee surface waters for the presence of pharmaceuticals. Composite surface samples were collected upstream and downstream of sewage treatment plants and at the inflow of major tributaries to the Tennessee River to determine the presence and potential sources of pharmaceuticals. Subsurface samples were collected at 7 meters depth to determine differences in occurrence and potential natural degradation. All samples were collected once during each of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall) to determine yearly variations. Aliquots …
A Study Of Avian Nest Predation At Audubon Acres In Chattanooga, Tn, Melea R. Langley
A Study Of Avian Nest Predation At Audubon Acres In Chattanooga, Tn, Melea R. Langley
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Predation is believed to be the primary cause of nesting mortality among North American migratory land birds. High rates of nest predation can jeopardize avian reproductive biology by affecting life histories and habitat selection. Artificial nests are commonly used to study nest predation because they allow the researcher to investigate comparative treatments and their impact on predation. Relative nest predation was studied at Audubon Acres in Chattanooga, TN using artificial nests. The study investigated differences in habitat types, nest heights, egg types, and predator types.

My Son, Listen To The Instruction Of Your Father : An Analysis Of How The Father’S Rhetoric In Proverbs 1-7 Continues And Climaxes In Proverbs 8-9, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Liu, Hsiao-Yung (Samuel) "My Son, Listen to the Instruction of Your Father: An Analysis of How the Father Rhetoric in Proverbs 1-7 Continues and Climaxes in Proverbs 8-9." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007. 200 pp.
This dissertation proposes the thesis that the father's rhetoric in Prov 1-7 continues and climaxes in Prov 8-9, thus supporting the unity of Prov 1-9. Although diverse voices and genres make the reading of Prov 1-9 difficult, there still exists the unifying perspective of the implied speaker in the text, which is the father's rhetoric,
Therefore, assuming that one single author or editor completed the …

Effects Of Job Stereotype, Applicant Gender, And Powerful And Powerless Speech Styles On Telephone Interview Outcomes, Heather Deanna Palmer Mcfarland
Dissertations
By examining the effects of powerful and powerless speech styles, gender stereotyped jobs, and gendered voices during the employment interviewing process, this study sought to further the research of Parton (1996); Parton, Siltanen, Hosman, and Langenderfer (2002); and Juodvalkis, Grefe, Hogue, Svyantek, and DeLamarter (2003). This study was designed to further explore the possibility of longitudinal changes within acceptable communicative expectations during telephone job interviewing. Participants (undergraduate and professional) listened to two audio taped interviews manipulated by speech style, stereotyped job title, and interviewee gender. Variables were evaluated on semantic differential scales following the previous work of Parton (1996). Similar …

Political Rivalry In Rhode Island: William H. Vanderbilt Vs. J. Howard Mcgrath: The Wiretapping Case, Debra A. Mulligan
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
The 1939 wiretapping case bared many of the intra- and inter- party struggles that had been festering during the interwar years. Pitting Democrat J. Howard McGrath and Republican William H. Vanderbilt, two energetic and ambitious rival politicians, against each other, this scandal raised the issues of the right to privacy and the legality of using evidence obtained through electronic surveillance. Additionally, the case exposed the heated rivalry between the old and new guard within the Republican Party, while simultaneously restoring harmony among the competing forces within the Democrat Party.

The Assyrian Heroic Epic Of Qa Īne Gabbara: A Modern Poem In The Ancient Bardic Tradition, Sargon Donabed
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
This work discusses a modern Assyrian epic, Qa īne Gabbara, in both its oral and written traditions, and examines its importance in marking continuity in culture, traditions and language. Building on an earlier study by Younan Hozaya, this essay shows how Qa īne Gabbara fits within the genre of heroic epic, thereby bringing new light to a vastly overlooked and understudied Assyrian cultural tradition.

Fostering To Children's Needs Or Fostering To Legislators' Personal Agendas., Tracy Kasparek
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Legislators and judges must keep their own personal biases of homosexuals out of their analysis, particularly when considering if same-sex couples should be foster parents. Legislators and judges personal biases are rooted in unsubstantiated beliefs that homosexuals are mentally ill, lack the same maternal or parental instincts as hetersexuals, and may turn the children into homosexuals. None of these beliefs are supported by any type of evidence. On the contrary, studies indicate that homosexual couples are as fit for parenting as heterosexual couples. Furthermore, homosexual couples tend to take the hardest children to place such as: minority children, children with …

This Note considers whether college athletes-specifically Division I football and men's basketball players-can utilize the protections of the National Labor Relations Act to form unions. The Note examines the history of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, considers whether National Labor Relations Board jurisprudence allows the application of the NLRA to college athletics, and evaluates the potential consequences of the NLRB certifying a union of college athletes. The Note argues that the NLRB should not allow college athletes to unionize, but should instead let Congress decide whether college athletes are "employees" under the NLRA, and, if so, how they should be …
