The Population Genetics Of The Wood Frog, Rana Sylvatica, Across Its Geographic Range, Tina M. Squire Dec 2007

The Population Genetics Of The Wood Frog, Rana Sylvatica, Across Its Geographic Range, Tina M. Squire

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to determine the level of genetic variation across the continental-wide range of the wood frog, Rana sylvatica. Levels of genetic differentiation between sampled populations were investigated as was the possible locations of glacial refugia for this species. DNA microsatellites were used as the genetic marker. This study found significant genetic differentiation across the geographic range of Rana sylvatica that increased with geographic distance. In addition three likely glacial refugia, Alaska, New York and the southern Appalachians, were identified.

A subset of the populations used in the geographic range study was used to investigate the patterns at a …

The Substitution Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang Dec 2007

The Substitution Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang

Articles and Preprints

In this article we establish a substitution theorem for semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) depending on the initial condition as an infinite-dimensional parameter. Due to the infinitedimensionality of the initial conditions and of the stochastic dynamics, existing finite-dimensional results do not apply. The substitution theorem is proved using Malliavin calculus techniques together with new estimates on the underlying stochastic semiflow. Applications of the theorem include dynamic characterizations of solutions of stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) with anticipating initial conditions and non-ergodic stationary solutions. In particular, our result gives a new existence theorem for solutions of semilinear Stratonovich spde's with anticipating …

A Hierarchical Model For Oxygen Dynamics In Streams, James E. Garvey, Matt R. Whiles, Dennis Streicher Dec 2007

A Hierarchical Model For Oxygen Dynamics In Streams, James E. Garvey, Matt R. Whiles, Dennis Streicher

Publications

Although oxygen frequently limits aquatic ecosystems, broad temporal-spatial oxygen dynamics in streams and consequences for aquatic life are poorly understood. In this perspective, we quantified dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (mg·L–1) in six low-gradient streams in Illinois, USA, using semicontinuous data loggers at multiple sites during summer 2005 (a severe drought year) and summer 2006. We then interpreted these patterns in the context of known responses of stream organisms to DO. Daily median and minimum DO concentrations varied among sites, even within streams. Daily mean discharge (m3·s–1) explained as much as 63% of the variance in DO …

Exchange Bias In Bulk Mn Rich Ni–Mn–Sn Heusler Alloys, Mahmud Khan, Igor Dubenko, Shane Stadler, Naushad Ali Dec 2007

Exchange Bias In Bulk Mn Rich Ni–Mn–Sn Heusler Alloys, Mahmud Khan, Igor Dubenko, Shane Stadler, Naushad Ali

Publications

An experimental study on the exchange bias properties of bulk polycrystalline Ni50Mn50−xSnx Heusler alloys has been performed. Martensitic transformations have been observed in the alloys for some critical Sn concentrations. The alloys, while in their respective martensitic phases, are found to exhibit exchange bias effect. Shifts in hysteresis loops of up to 225 Oe were observed in the 50 kOe field cooled samples. The observed exchange bias behavior in Ni50Mn50−xSnx is attributed to the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions in the system.

Space, The Final Frontier-Expanding Fcc Regulation Of Indecent Content Onto Direct Broadcast Satellite, John C. Quale, Malcolm J. Tuesley

Federal Communications Law Journal

The vast majority of viewers today receive video programming from multichannel video programming providers-mostly cable television or direct broadcast satellite ("DBS")-rather than directly over-the-air from broadcast stations. While the FCC has not hesitated to sanction broadcasters for what it deems to be indecent content, it consistently has found that it lacks the authority to regulate indecency on subscription services like cable television. Citizens groups and some in Congress now seek to extend indecency restrictions to DBS services under existing law or through the enactment of new legislation. It is true that DBS, because of its use of radio spectrum to …

In The Dark: A Consumer Perspective On Fcc Broadcast Indecency Denials, Genelle I. Belmas, Gail D. Love, Brian C. Foy Dec 2007

In The Dark: A Consumer Perspective On Fcc Broadcast Indecency Denials, Genelle I. Belmas, Gail D. Love, Brian C. Foy

Federal Communications Law Journal

Indecency regulation has been a hot political and social topic since Janet Jackson revealed her breast during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. The number of indecency complaints the FCC receives each year continues to rise. Moreover, to further complicate matters, in 2007 the Second Circuit overturned the FCC policy that so-called "fleeting expletives" would be considered indecent. However, there has been no systematic review of the complaints from the perspective of the complainant. How has the FCC managed its increasing indecency complaint load, and what does it tell consumers who have taken the time to write formal complaints about …

Summing Up The Public Interest: A Review Of "Media Diversity And Localism: Meaning And Metrics," Edited By Philip M. Napoli, Victoria F. Phillips Dec 2007

Summing Up The Public Interest: A Review Of "Media Diversity And Localism: Meaning And Metrics," Edited By Philip M. Napoli, Victoria F. Phillips

Federal Communications Law Journal

Philip Napoli's Media Diversity and Localism: Meaning and Metrics, is a thoughtful and first of its kind compilation of some of the ongoing research and scholarship examining the concepts of diversity and localism underlying the Federal Communications Commission's public interest standard in broadcasting. The collection of essays addresses these fundamental goals from a variety of disciplines beyond the law, including political science, communications policy, sociology, and economics. The essays explore the values associated with these two goals, apply performance metrics to assess existing regulatory policies intended to preserve and promote these goals, and reflect on their meaning in the new …

The Webt Campaign On The Blazar 3c 279 In 2006, Markus Böttcher, Jeff W. Robertson, Stéphane Vennes

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The quasar 3C 279 was the target of an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign from 2006 January through April. An optical-IR-radio monitoring campaign by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration was organized around target-of-opportunity X-ray and soft γ-ray observations with Chandra and INTEGRAL in 2006 mid-January, with additional X-ray coverage by RXTE and Swift XRT. In this paper we focus on the results of the WEBT campaign. The source exhibited substantial variability of optical flux and spectral shape, with a characteristic timescale of a few days. The variability patterns throughout the optical BVRI bands were very closely correlated with each …

Illusory Predictors: Generalizability Of Findings In Cocaine Treatment Retention Research, Angela L Stotts, Marc E Mooney, Shelly L Sayre, Meredith Novy, Joy M Schmitz, John Grabowski Dec 2007

Illusory Predictors: Generalizability Of Findings In Cocaine Treatment Retention Research, Angela L Stotts, Marc E Mooney, Shelly L Sayre, Meredith Novy, Joy M Schmitz, John Grabowski

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Treatment retention is of paramount importance in cocaine treatment research as treatment completion rates are often 50% or less. Failure to retain cocaine patients in treatment has both significant research and clinical implications. In this paper we qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrate the inconsistency found across analyses of retention predictors in order to highlight the problem. First, a qualitative review of the published literature was undertaken to identify the frequency of predictors studied and their relations to treatment retention. Second, an empirical demonstration of predictor stability was conducted by testing a common set of variables across three similar 12-week cocaine clinical …

Occurrence And Biological Effect Of Exogenous Steroids In The Elkhorn River, Nebraska, Usa, Alan S. Kolok, Daniel D. Snow, Satomi Kohno, Marlo K. Sellin, Louis J. Guillette Jr. Dec 2007

Occurrence And Biological Effect Of Exogenous Steroids In The Elkhorn River, Nebraska, Usa, Alan S. Kolok, Daniel D. Snow, Satomi Kohno, Marlo K. Sellin, Louis J. Guillette Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent studies of surface waters in North America, Japan, and Europe have reported the presence of steroidogenic agents as contaminants. The current study has three objectives: 1) to determine if steroidogenic compounds are present in the Elkhorn River, 2) to determine if sediments collected from the Elkhorn River can act as a source of steroidogenic compounds to aquatic organisms, and 3) to determine if site-specific biological effects are apparent in the hepatic gene expression of fathead minnows. Evidence was obtained using three approaches: 1) deployment of polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS), 2) deployment of caged fathead minnows, and 3) …

Cold Responsive Earli1 Type Hyprps Improve Freezing Survival Of Yeast Cells And Form Higher Order Complexes In Plants, Yi Zhang, Michael Schläppi Dec 2007

Cold Responsive Earli1 Type Hyprps Improve Freezing Survival Of Yeast Cells And Form Higher Order Complexes In Plants, Yi Zhang, Michael Schläppi

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Plants have large families of proteins sharing a conserved eight-cysteine-motif (8CM) domain. The biological functions of these proteins are largely unknown. EARLI1 is a cold responsive Arabidopsis gene that encodes a hybrid proline-rich protein (HyPRP) with a three-domain architecture: a putative signal peptide at the N-terminus, a proline-rich domain (PRD) in the middle, and an 8CM domain at the C-terminus. We report here that yeast cells expressing different EARLI1 genes had significantly higher rates of freezing survival than empty-vector transformed controls. Arabidopsis plants with knocked down EARLI1 genes had an increased tendency for freezing-induced cellular damage. EARLI1-GFP Fluorescence in …

Fitting Event-History Models To Uneventful Data, Douglas A. Wolf, Thomas M. Gill Dec 2007

Fitting Event-History Models To Uneventful Data, Douglas A. Wolf, Thomas M. Gill

Center for Policy Research

Data with which to study disability dynamics usually take the form of successive current-status measures of disability rather than a record of events or spell durations. One recent paper presented a semi-Markov model of disability dynamics in which spell durations were inferred from sequences of current-status measures taken at 12-month intervals. In that analysis, it was assumed that no unobserved disablement transitions occurred between annual interviews. We use data from a longitudinal survey in which participants' disability was measured at monthly intervals, and simulate the survival curves for remaining disabled that would be obtained with 1- and 12-month follow-up intervals. …

Prediction Of Tensile Strength For Sandwich Injection Molded Short-Glass-Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics, S Patcharaphun, G Mennig Dec 2007

Prediction Of Tensile Strength For Sandwich Injection Molded Short-Glass-Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics, S Patcharaphun, G Mennig

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This present paper provides a modified rule-of-mixtures relationship which allows for the calculation of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) as a function of the area fraction between skin and core layers. The effects of fiber length and fiber orientation within the skin and core layers on the tensile strength of conventional and sandwich injection molded short-glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene have been studied in detail. The present theory is then applied to existing experimental results and the agreement is found to be satisfactory

Zn Coatings For Temporary Protection Applied By Peening Technology, J Brezinnová Dec 2007

Zn Coatings For Temporary Protection Applied By Peening Technology, J Brezinnová

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This paper presents actual investigation results of an experiment that aimed at verifying the possibility of applying zinc on steel surface by peening technology using zinc-coated cut wire. A suitable method for obtained zinc layers and evaluation of their corrosion resistance was determined. Accelerated laboratory tests with presence of SO2 and long term working tests in atmospheric conditions were used. Creation of incoherent zinc coatings was established on the bases of metallographic and spectral analysis. The process of cold zinc by peening may serve as temporary anticorrosion protection of steel surface.

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of En Aw 6082 Aluminium Alloy Prepared By Equal-Channel Angular Pressing, M Fujda, T Kvačkaj Dec 2007

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of En Aw 6082 Aluminium Alloy Prepared By Equal-Channel Angular Pressing, M Fujda, T Kvačkaj

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The mechanical properties and microstructure of EN AW 6082 aluminium alloy subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) and natural ageing are compared with those of extruded and artificially aged state (initial state) and quenched state of alloy after solution annealing. Quenched state of alloy was deformed at room temperature by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) following route C up to three passes. Polyedric microstructure of quenched state was considerably changed by SPD. Deformation bands with different amount of deformation were observed in microstructure of ECAPed state, which indicated non-uniform deformation across the cross-section of ECAPed specimen. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) …
