Investigation Of Radio Frequency Discharges And Langmuir Probe Diagnostic Methods In A Fast Flowing Electronegative Background Gas, Nathaniel P. Lockwood
Theses and Dissertations
Discharges in a flowing background gas are used to produce charged and excited species for numerous applications including etching semiconductors and pumping gas discharge lasers (Pinhero and others, 1998). The effect of a flowing background gas on the charged and excited neutral species generation by an RF discharge in a flow tube and the diagnostics of the resulting plasma with a Langmuir probe have been investigated for pressures between 0.001 to 1 Torr and flow velocities up to 1000 m/s. This investigation was performed using a fluid method coupled to a chemical kinetic model and a hybrid Particle-In-Cell/Monte Carlo Collision …

Route Validation Using Radio Frequency Identification, William T. Watson
Route Validation Using Radio Frequency Identification, William T. Watson
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, radio frequency identification (RFID) has been proposed and implemented in a variety of applications where tracking objects, animals or people is desirable. This paper proposes a novel approach to the application of RFID technology in those applications where it is possible to validate a person or an object's passive contact with a given or arbitrary set of fixed points along a predefined route. The notable departure from the typical application of RFID technology is that in this scheme, the transponders are permanently installed while the interrogator is affixed to a person or object that travels the course. …

Impairments In Inhibition Or Cognitive Control In Psychological Disorders, Paula T. Hertel
Impairments In Inhibition Or Cognitive Control In Psychological Disorders, Paula T. Hertel
Psychology Faculty Research
Contributions to this special issue of Applied & Preventive Psychology richly elucidate connections between a variety of psychological disorders and performance in a number of tasks that are used to reason about inhibitory deficits. This commentary calls attention to the different uses of the concept of inhibition - vernacular, neural, operational, and theoretical - and suggests that the term cognitive control avoids claims about dampened memory representations that are difficult to support. Central findings from the reviews are summarized; evidence concerning suppression-induced forgetting is featured and directions to foster application are discussed.

Baghdad Science Journal
Thiamine stimulates the production of a red pigment , which is chromatographically and spectrophotometrically identical to prodigiosin , by growing cultures of serratia marcescens mutant 9-3-3 . this mutant is blocked in the formation of 2- methyl -3- amyl pyrorol( MAP),the monopyrrole moiety of prodigiosin , but accumulates 4-methoxy-2, 2-bipyrrole -5- carboxaldehyde (MBC) and can couple this compound with( MAP) to form prodigiosin . Addition of thiamine caused production of( MAP) , and as little as 0.02 mg of thiamine / ml in peptone- glycerol medium stimulated production of measurable amounts of prodigiosin. Phosphate saltes and another type of peptone …
Bilinear System Identification Using Subspace Method, Wesam M. Jasim
Bilinear System Identification Using Subspace Method, Wesam M. Jasim
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper, a subspace identification method for bilinear systems is used . Wherein a " three-block " and " four-block " subspace algorithms are used. In this algorithms the input signal to the system does not have to be white . Simulation of these algorithms shows that the " four-block " gives fast convergence and the dimensions of the matrices involved are significantly smaller so that the computational complexity is lower as a comparison with " three-block " algorithm .

Two's Company, Three's A Crowd: Stable Family And Threesome Roommates Problems, Chien-Chung Huang
Two's Company, Three's A Crowd: Stable Family And Threesome Roommates Problems, Chien-Chung Huang
Computer Science Technical Reports
We investigate Knuth's eleventh open question on stable matchings. In the stable family problem, sets of women, men, and dogs are given, all of whom state their preferences among the other two groups. The goal is to organize them into family units, so that no three of them have the incentive to desert their assigned family members to form a new family. A similar problem, called the threesome roommates problem, assumes that a group of persons, each with their preferences among the combinations of two others, are to be partitioned into triples. Similarly, the goal is to make sure that …

Exclusion And Object Tracking In A Network Of Processes, Yih-Kuen Tsay, Chien-Chung Huang
Exclusion And Object Tracking In A Network Of Processes, Yih-Kuen Tsay, Chien-Chung Huang
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper concerns two fundamental problems in distributed computing---mutual exclusion and mobile object tracking. For a variant of the mutual exclusion problem where the network topology is taken into account, all existing distributed solutions make use of tokens. It turns out that these token-based solutions for mutual exclusion can also be adapted for object tracking, as the token behaves very much like a mobile object. To handle objects with replication, we go further to consider the more general $k$-exclusion problem which has not been as well studied in a network setting. A strong fairness property for $k$-exclusion requires that a …

An Examination Of Colliding Galaxy Clusters: Recreating 1e 0657-56 With Gadget-2, Joseph Johnson
All Theses
In this thesis I use the publicly available smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code GADGET-2 to investigate and recreate the phenomenon of two merging galaxy clusters, as currently seen in the hot X-ray cluster 1E 0657-56 (the 'bullet cluster'). In this scenario, the stellar and dark matter components of the galaxies pass through the collision without experiencing strong stopping forces, but the intra-cluster gas is significantly slowed by ram pressure. This leads to a spatial separation between the galaxies and the intra-cluster gas, which provides a testing ground for gravitational theories. Weak gravitational lensing in the cluster has been used to …

Elastic Breakup In Uniaxial Extension Of Entangled Polymer Melts, Yangyang Wang, Pouyan Boukany, Shi-Qing Wang, Xiaorong Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Five entangled melts, with the number of entanglements per chain ranging from 25 to 160, have been studied to illustrate how cohesive strength can be overcome in either continuous or interrupted extension (i.e., during or after uniaxial stretching). The internal elastic stress due to chain deformation from imposed strain appears to be the cause of the observed yielding behavior that reveals scaling laws. The visual signature of the elastic breakup is the occurrence of nonuniform extension. The yield phenomena may be understood at a force level.
