Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND : Hydatid disease, also known as echinococcosis or hydatidosis, is caused by infection with larva of Echinococcus granulosus, which causes cystic hydatid disease. Surgery is the recommended treatment for hydatid cysts; however, drug therapy and percutaneous drainage have recently been introduced as alternative treatments. The scolicidal agents, including 3% hydrogen peroxide, 10% chlorhexidine, 20% hypertonic saline have been used mainly during surgical manipulation of the cysts. Recently cyclosporin A has been found to be lethal for E. granulosus protoscolices in vitro using cultured sheep hydatid cyst. METHOD: The present work was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of different …

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Many compounds from natural sources, including silymarin, proved to have effective inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) in vitro qnd experimental animals. The exellent pharmacological pre-clinical profile of these compounds indicates a broad range anti-inflammatory effectiveness devoid of the most troublesome side effects, which have at least impart impaired the clinical use of the classical COX inhibitors, including the newer selective COX-2 inhibitors. OBJECTIVES: This project designed to evaluate the clinical utility of silymarin, as a dual inhibitor of COX and 5-LO, as a single agent or in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) of both …

A Systematic Analysis Of The Deracialization Concept, Byron D. Orey, Boris E. Ricks Dec 2007

A Systematic Analysis Of The Deracialization Concept, Byron D. Orey, Boris E. Ricks

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

The concept of deracialization gained notoriety following elections held in November of 1989. During these elections, a number of African-American candidates captured victories in majority-white electoral jurisdictions, leading McConnick to coin this Election Day as "Black Tuesday." Among those elected on "Black Tuesday" include: L. Douglas Wilder as governor of Virginia, David Dinkins as mayor of New York City, Norman Rice as mayor of Seattle and Chester Jenkins, mayor of Durham, North Carolina. In this article we systematically examine the deracialization construct/strategy and the potentially damaging impact that such a strategy might pose on the black community.

Impacts Of Climate Warming And Permafrost Thaw On The Riverine Transport Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus To The Kara Sea, Karen E. Frey, James W. Mcclelland, Robert M. Holmes, Laurence G. Smith

Geography

Measurements of nitrogen and phosphorus (N and P) concentrations from previously unstudied streams and rivers throughout west Siberia suggest that climate warming and/or associated permafrost thaw will likely amplify the transport of N and P to the Kara Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean. We present concentrations of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) from 96 streams and rivers within the Ob'-Iriysh, Nadym, and Pur river drainage basins. The sampled sites span ∼106 km2, a large climatic gradient (∼55°N-68°N), and include 41 cold, permafrost-influenced and 55 warm, permafrost-free watersheds. Concentrations …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present Doppler images and surface differential rotation measurements for the primary of the RS CVn binary IM Pegasi, the guide star for the Gravity Probe B experiment. The data used is a subset of that taken during optical support of the mission and was obtained almost nightly over a near three year period from the Automatic Spectroscopic Telescope operated by Tennessee State University. Using the technique of least-squares deconvolution to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the data, we have reconstructed 31 maximum entropy Doppler images of the star. The images show that the spot features are relatively stable for …

Acetylation In Nuclear Receptor Signaling And The Role Of Sirtuins, Chenguang Wang, Michael J. Powell, Vladimir M. Popov, Richard G. Pestell Dec 2007

Acetylation In Nuclear Receptor Signaling And The Role Of Sirtuins, Chenguang Wang, Michael J. Powell, Vladimir M. Popov, Richard G. Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

It has been known since the early 1970s that nuclear receptor complexes bind DNA in association with co-regulatory proteins. Characterization of these nuclear receptor coregulators has revealed diverse enzymatic activities which temporally and spatially coordinate nuclear receptor activity within the context of local chromatin in response to diverse hormone signals. Chromatin modifying proteins, which dictate the higher order chromatin structure in which DNA is packaged, in turn orchestrate orderly recruitment of nuclear receptor complexes. Modifications of histones include acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, sumoylation, ADP ribosylation, deimination and proline isomerization (1). At this time, we understand how a subset of these …

Earth Sciences

We assess the quality of the version 2.2 (v2.2) HNO3 measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Earth Observing System Aura satellite. The MLS HNO3 product has been greatly improved over that in the previous version (v1.5), with smoother profiles, much more realistic behavior at the lowest retrieval levels, and correction of a high bias caused by an error in one of the spectroscopy files used in v1.5 processing. The v2.2 HNO3 data are scientifically useful over the range 215 to 3.2 hPa, with single-profile precision of ∼0.7 ppbv throughout. Vertical resolution is 3–4 km …

Phase Dynamics Of Inas/Gaas Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, T. Piwonski, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al. Dec 2007

Phase Dynamics Of Inas/Gaas Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, T. Piwonski, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

The gain and phase dynamics of InAs∕GaAs quantum dot amplifiers are studied using single and two-color heterodyne pump probe spectroscopy. The relaxation of the wetting layer carrier density is shown to have a strong effect on the phase dynamics of both ground and excited state transients, while having a much weaker effect on the gain dynamics. In addition, the dynamical alpha factor may also display a constant value after an initial transient. Such behavior is strongly encouraging for reduced pattern effect operation in high speed optical networks.

We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ boson production. The boson pairs are produced in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wγ boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18<λ<0.17 and -0.46<Δκ<0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cutoff scale Λ=1.5TeV. © 2007 The American Physical Society.
