The economically important Louisiana Coastal Area (LCA) is susceptible to hurricane activity which is increasingly aggravated by the continuing erosion of wetlands. Various programs are aimed at building sophisticated models of meteorological, coastal, and ecological processes. The emerging paradigm of Dynamic Data Driven Application Systems (DDDAS) can be applied to these models leading to new scenarios for integrated, real-time simulations that include feedback control with sensors and simulations. This paper describes the motivation and components for a comprehensive DDDAS for coastal and environmental modeling and the implications this has for scientific libraries and high performance computing. © 2007 International Federation …

Substrate Engineering For High-Performance Surface-Channel Iii-V Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors, Y Xuan, P. D. Ye, T Shen

High-performance inversion-type enhancement-mode n-channel In0.65Ga0.35As metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with atomic-layer-deposited Al2O3 as gate dielectric are demonstrated. A 0.5 mu m gate-length MOSFET with an Al2O3 gate oxide thickness of 10 nm shows a gate leakage current less than 5x10(-6) A/cm(2) at 4 V gate bias, a threshold voltage of 0.40 V, a maximum drain current of 670 mA/mm, and transconductance of 230 mS/mm at drain voltage of 2 V. More importantly, a model is proposed to ascribe this 80% improvement of device performance from In0.53Ga0.47As MOSFETs mainly to lowering the energy level difference between the charge neutrality level and …

This paper reports on the application of systems modelling benchmarks to determine the viability of systems modelling software and its suitability for modelling critical infrastructure systems. This research applies the earlier research that related to developing benchmarks that when applied to systems modelling software will indicate its likely suitability to modelling critical infrastructure systems. In this context, the systems modeling benchmarks will assess the practicality of CPNTools to the task of modelling critical infrastructure systems.

The Intelligence profession requires effective management to function properly and professional discourse highlights the changing nature of intelligence work. Highlighted “failures” are linked to organizational structures and ethos, and proposals to address the problems include discussion of human and organizational factors with recommendations that address the issues. However, optimising the intelligence process may not be a simple case of applying management techniques as the work relies substantially on individual endeavour. Innovative management techniques are needed and these should be grounded in recognising the peculiar nature of analysis and the skill set required.

The present study examined the potential relationship between specific characteristics of organizational recruitment web sites and applicant attraction to the organization. Cober, Brown, Keeping, and Levy (2004) proposed a conceptual model that suggests web site aesthetics influence the applicant's attitude toward the web site which in turn influences applicant attraction. The current study provides a partial test of this model by examining web site aesthetics, prior attitudes toward the organization, initial affective reactions to the web site, perceptions of web site usability and post-viewing attitudes toward the site and the organization. A mathematical model for PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is developed using the law of mass action. Differential equations are written from the chemical equations, preserving the detail of the complementary DNA single strand being extended one bas e pair at a time. The equations for the annealing stage are solved analytically. The method of multiple scales is used to approximate solutions for the extension stage. A map is then developed from the solutions to simulate PCR. The advantage of this model is the ability to use the map to optimize the process. Effects Of Water Vapor On The Kinetics Of The Methylperoxy Radical Self-Reaction And Reaction With Hydroperoxy, Alecia Mower

The gas phase reactions of CH3O2 + CH3O2, HO2 + HO2, and CH3O2 + HO2 in the presence of water vapor have been studied at temperatures between 263 and 303 K using laser flash photolysis coupled with UV time-resolved absorption detection at 220 nm and 260 nm. Water vapor concentration was quantified using tunable diode laser spectroscopy operating in the mid-IR. The HO2 self-reaction rate constant is significantly enhanced by water vapor, consistent with what others have reported, whereas CH3O2 self-reaction and the cross-reaction (CH3O2 + HO2) rate constants are nearly unaffected. Relation between the elastic modulus and the diameter (D) of ZnOnanowires was elucidated using a model with the calculated ZnOsurface stresses as input. We predict for ZnOnanowires due to surface stress effect: (1) when D>20nm, the elastic modulus would be lower than the bulk modulus and decrease with the decreasing diameter, (2) when 20nm>D>2nm, the nanowires with a longer length and a wurtzite crystal structure could be mechanically unstable, and (3) when D<2nm, the elastic modulus would be higher than that of the bulk value and increase with a decrease in nanowire diameter.
