The research and statistics present systematic development of small and medium enterprises (SME). Their significance is growing when compared to large firms. They became more competitive. The development is continuous, and yet the pace of growth since 2000 has been slower than in the 1990s. On the other hand, knowledge and innovation in Polish SMEs are relatively poorly developed. Innovations in SMEs result from typical investments. Acquiring knowledge used in an innovation activity must be assessed negatively. My thesis draws connections between today's network society and the workings of gothic literature in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century. Just as our society is formed and affected by the flow of information, the eighteenth-century culture of sensibility was formed by the merging and flow of scientific "technology" (or new scientific discoveries) and societal norms and rules. Gothic literature was born out of this science-society network, and in many ways embodies the ruptures implicit in it. Although gothic literature is not a network in the same sense as informationalism and the culture of sensibility are, gothic literature works according …

The effects of perceived mental/emotional problems (psychopathology) in the family-of-origin on adult offspring marital satisfaction was tested in a model considering the mediating variables of parental marital satisfaction, mother-child relationship quality, father-child relationship quality, and resolution of issues from the family-of-origin. The nationally representative sample (n = 802) drawn from the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE) database included mostly college educated, lower-middle-class individuals in their first marriage. This sample was used to test a structural equation model that results showed fit the data well. Results showed that historical (distal) factors (such as psychopathology in the family-of-origin) explain only a small portion of …

W artykule przeanalizowano – w oparciu o kluczowe koncepcje makroekonomiczne – mechanizm postępowania konsumentów w dziedzinie podejmowania decyzji konsumpcyjnych. Skoncentrowano się na hipotezie dochodu absolutnego J.M. Keynesa, hipotezie dochodu względnego J.S. Duesenberry.’ego, hipotezie dochodu permanentnego M. Friedmana oraz hipotezie cyklu życia F. Modiglianiego i A.K. Ando. Podstawowe założenia, odnoszące się do poszczególnych hipotez konsumpcji, skorelowano z mechanizmem zachowania się konsumentów na rynku, analizując jednocześnie kluczowe determinanty decydujące o postępowaniu konsumenta na rynku w omawianych makroekonomicznych koncepcjach konsumpcji.

The Role Of Secreted Phosphoprotein-24 In Osteoblast Differentiation And Matrix Mineralization, Samuel Ramage

Secreted Phosphoprotein-24 (Spp24) was initially isolated and characterized as a component of bovine cortical bone matrix. Subsequent characterization has shown it is multiply phosphorylated and homologous to cystatin and TGF-β receptor type II. Spp24 is a minor component of the serum fetuin mineral complex that binds calcium-phosphate minerals and prevents their deposition. The TGF-β receptor homology domain binds BMP-2 weakly in vitro and enhances BMP-2’s osteogenic effects in vivo. The ability of Spp24 to affect BMP activity suggests an important role for Spp24 as a native, bioactive componentof bone that regulates bone development.

System administrators for parallel computers face many difficulties when managing job scheduling systems. First, current production job schedulers use many parameters, which seem flexible but it is highly challenging to configure and tune these parameters. Second, fair share is an important scheduling goal, but it is not clear what kind of fair share can be expected under current schedulers and how fair share impacts scheduling performance. Third, several job runtime prediction methods were proposed to improve inaccurate user-estimated runtimes, but these methods could under-estimate runtimes by a large amount and it is not clear whether they are practical for use …

In the context of potential catastrophic climate change, it is vital that fundamental drivers of carbon dioxide emissions are pinpointed and addressed. One of the key drivers of these emissions is shown to be increased economic wealth. This paper highlights that links between wealth and carbon dioxide must be addressed, and that although highly debated, the links are not well considered, especially at the detailed level of what drives consumption preferences of the global wealthy. Niche separation may be the key to promoting the long-term coexistence of introduced and native species. Physical alterations to the environment (habitat manipulation) or re-introducing native species to former habitats can exploit the maladapted traits of introduced species to create a refuge for native species. No two species have identical niches because evolutionary constraints differ between species with different evolutionary histories. Our objectives were to determine if cold temperatures could promote coexistence between native least chub and introduced western mosquitofish.
