Attosecond Control Of Ionization By Wave-Packet Interference, P. Johnsson, J. Mauritsson, T. Remetter, A. L'Huillier, K. J. Schafer

A train of attosecond pulses, synchronized to an infrared (IR) laser field, is used to create a series of electron wave packets (EWPs) that are below the ionization threshold in. helium. The ionization probability is found to strongly oscillate with the delay between the IR and attosecond fields twice per IR laser cycle. Calculations that reproduce the experimental results demonstrate that this ionization control results from interference between transiently bound EWPs created by different pulses in the train. In this way, we are able to observe, for the first time, attosecond wave-packet interference in a strongly driven atomic system. © …

Immigration from the Latin American nations has become a prominent topic of discussion nationwide. Illinois is, to be sure, not an exception. The Latino population of Bloomington-Normal has grown drastically in recent years. To address these new developments, coalitions and organizations have been formed which endeavor to understand, and even provide for, the needs of this new community. Some hope this may facilitate their contribution to their new neighborhood.

The Drosophila melanogaster photoreceptor cell has long served as a model system for researchers focusing on how animal sensory neurons receive information from their surroundings and translate this information into chemical and electrical messages. Electroretinograph (ERG) analysis of Drosophila mutants has helped to elucidate some of the genes involved in the visual transduction pathway downstream of the photoreceptor cell, and it is now clear that photoreceptor cell signaling is dependent upon the proper release and recycling of the neurotransmitter histamine. Water chestnut (Trapa natans L.) is native to southern Europe and tropical Africa and Asia and was first introduced into North America in 1874. Since then, wild populations have quickly become established in many locations in the northeastern United States. T. natans is referred to as a noxious aquatic weed since its aggressive growth usually results in complete coverage of the water surface with floating rosettes of leaves. This study investigated the potential of the ultrasonic control of water chestnut since ultrasound has been documented to effectively damage plant cells and tissues. The mathematical isomorphism between the layer index in a bilayer system and the spin index in a spin-polarized system is used to draw an analogy between phenomena that occur in the two systems as a result of the electron-electron (e-e) interaction. First, the classical case of the Coulomb drag, a phenomenon resulting from momentum transfer through e-e collisions, is reviewed for both bilayer systems and spin-polarized systems. Then, the spin-backflow phenomenon, a result of the interaction-induced changes in the local quasiparticle energy that affects the charge transport in spin-polarized systems is presented. OXFORD, Miss. - The faculty at the University of Mississippi is firmly supporting Chancellor Robert Khayat in his efforts to encourage a more equitable method of allocating funds for the state's eight universities. This week, UM's Faculty Senate passed a resolution urging Khayat to continue his efforts to encourage the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning to revise the funding allocation process.

The Tryphê Of The Sybarites: A Historiographical Problem In Athenaeus, Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa Gorman

A large number of the most informative fragments of the Hellenistic Greek historians are transmitted by Athenaeus. Unlike the frequently jejune evidence provided by scholiasts, lexicographers, and the like, these texts allow us to draw historiographical conclusions about lost writers: on this basis, scholars have posited, for example, the place of a given author in the Hellenistic “schools” of history. The importance of Athenaeus as a source for history-writing between Xenophon and Diodorus calls for detailed study of the Deipnosophist’s method of citing these lost authors. The present article focuses on Athenaeus’ testimony concerning the downfall of Archaic Sybaris through …

In an effort to better understand the mental processing connected to different kinds of CALL activities, this study collected data on time subjects spent, as well as buttons subjects clicked while doing 10 different CALL activities accompanying a beginning French text book. In addition, a group of subjects thought out loud as they completed the same activities. These subjects were recorded on video, their thinking out loud was transcribed and the transcriptions were coded according to how they indicated they were dealing with the language input. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential benefits of a primitive wilderness skills intervention (POST) on the therapeutic change process of adolescent females enrolled in a residential treatment center. A qualitative data analysis approach was used. A convenience sample of eight female adolescents was selected by therapist referral. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Data analysis was used to assess participants' progress in the therapeutic change. Further analysis revealed a core theme connecting participants' POST experience with feelings of self-empowerment and reflective connections to their individual therapeutic change process. The purpose of the first part of the study was to develop a simplified near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy method for detecting insect larvae in individual wheat kernels. Discriminant analysis, based on Mahalanobis distances calculated from log 1/R data at only four discrete wavelengths, yielded better results for classification of sound and insect infested wheat kernels than principal component analysis (PCA) using the spectral region from 1100 to 1900 nm. This simplified technique was then used to detect 3- and 4-week-old larvae of granary and maize weevils in wheat kernels. A model developed from a calibration set containing sound kernels and …

Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) results in the upregulation of several intracellular systems which help to prepare a cell for a high energy challenge. The magnitude of the AMPK response to a 10 min bout of exercise has been found to decrease in red quadriceps (RQ) following training, while putative AMPK roles seem to be maintained; specifically, the biogenesis of mitochondria and higher levels of hexokinase II and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4). If the AMPK response to exercise is responsible in part for these adaptations, how can they be maintained if the AMPK response is attenuated? The purpose of …

Researchers have proposed clustered microarchitectures to capture the benefits of high performance and high energy efficiency. Typically, clustered microarchitectures offer fast local bypasses (i.e., value forwarding between instructions) within clusters and require global bypasses to take longer, more than one cycle. With communication locality (i.e., most communication is within the clusters) the clustered designs capture the benefits of both improved instructions per cycle and increased clock-frequency. Traditional clustered microarchitectures are implemented by partitioning the register file and associated functional units to clusters.
