The Role Of Mentors/Advisors In The Doctoral Training Of African American Students At Predominately White Universities: Implications For Doctoral Training, James T. Kador, Chance W. Lewis

Essays in Education

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship and the importance of connecting the African American doctoral students and their advisors in the mentor roles. More specifically, this study brings to the forefront the importance as well as the impact of mentors/advisors and their roles in facilitating academic success for African American doctoral students. Many African American doctoral students are typically misunderstood and misdirected in the types of support that they may need to succeed in graduate school (Gallien & Peterson, 2005). Mentors/advisors and the roles that they have are essential to the success of African American doctoral …

Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring Smoking Behavior, Melissa D. Blank Jan 2007

Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring Smoking Behavior, Melissa D. Blank

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the factors that influence regular tobacco use often involves detailed assessment of individuals' smoking behavior (i.e., puff topography), including measuring puff number, volume, duration, and inter-puff interval (IPI) via mouthpiece-based, computerized devices. For example, puff topography measurement has been used to study smoking cessation medications, as well as to demonstrate brand-induced changes in smoking behavior. However, some research suggests that the use of a mouthpiece to evaluate puff topography may alter natural smoking behavior. Thus, this study was designed to compare topography measurement using mouthpiece-based methods (i.e., desktop and portable computerized devices) to methods that do not use a …

Camping In The Classroom: Ridiculous Theatre As Serious Drama, John Kenneth Deboer Jan 2007

Camping In The Classroom: Ridiculous Theatre As Serious Drama, John Kenneth Deboer

Theses and Dissertations

My first semester pursuing my MFA in Voice and Speech Pedagogy I vocal-coached an openly gay student playing a straight character who would mask his sexual identity in such a manner that his performance became stiff and uninteresting. Rather than using his personal identity as an asset in the pursuit of a successful performance, his chosen vocal tactics removed any sense of theatricality from his performance. I confronted the student and suggested such extreme vocal suppression diminished the quality of his overall performance. He replied, "So you want me to get the gay out."His use of the phrase, "get the …

Work Hope As A Mediator Between Proactive Coping And Career Planfulness In Domestic And International University Students, Juan Juana Wu Jan 2007

Work Hope As A Mediator Between Proactive Coping And Career Planfulness In Domestic And International University Students, Juan Juana Wu

Theses and Dissertations

This study applied proactive coping theory (E. R. Greenglass, 2002; R. Schwarzer, 2000) to the domain of career development in domestic and international student transition-to-university. Participants were recruited from a large southeastern state university. No significant between-group differences were identified in the present study. Within both groups, proactive coping, work hope, and career planfulness were positively correlated. The role of work hope as a mediator between proactive coping and career planfulness was tested in domestic and international students respectively. For domestic students, a partial mediation model was established with a direct effect of proactive coping on career planfulness and an …

Civilly Committing Criminals: An Analysis Of The Expressive Function Of Nebraska's "Dangerous Sex Offender" Commitment Procedure, Marc W. Pearce Jan 2007

Civilly Committing Criminals: An Analysis Of The Expressive Function Of Nebraska's "Dangerous Sex Offender" Commitment Procedure, Marc W. Pearce

Nebraska Law Review

In 2006, the State of Nebraska adopted legislation that authorizes the civil commitment of convicted sex offenders who are "substantially unable to control [their] criminal behavior" and who "suffer[] from a mental illness .. .or .. .a personality disorder which makes [them] likely to engage in repeat acts of sexual violence." This legislation, which has its origins in the "sexually violent predator" commitment statutes of Washington and Kansas, authorizes the continuous, indefinite confinement of sex offenders who have completed their prison terms and who do not meet the state's traditional "mentally ill and dangerous civil commitment standard." Courts reviewing the …

The Structure Of Preemption Decisions, Garrick B. Pursley Jan 2007

The Structure Of Preemption Decisions, Garrick B. Pursley

Nebraska Law Review

Intuition suggests that preemption is a constitutional issue-when we ask whether a state law has been nullified because it conflicts with a federal law, we seem to be asking a constitutional question. But to an outsider, some of our commentary and practice would suggest that preemption has little to do with the Constitution at all. Professor Meltzer, for example, calls preemption a "subconstitutional" issue, and Professor Hoke urges that preemption be "de-constitutionalized." The Supreme Court treats preemption as a constitutional issue at one moment and as a statutory issue the next. Unlike other constitutional issues, some courts hold that preemption …

The Impact Of Stress Management On Nurse Productivity And Retention, Tammi F. Milliken, Paul T. Clements, Harry J. Tillman Jan 2007

The Impact Of Stress Management On Nurse Productivity And Retention, Tammi F. Milliken, Paul T. Clements, Harry J. Tillman

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

Throughout the history of nursing there is a seeming legacy of personnel shortage, lack of funds, and, based on the nature of the role and related services, heightened levels of stress involved in patient care.

The future of the profession and more imminently, patient care and the health of nurses, may be significantly impacted by repeated challenges where current levels of stress and burnout are contributing to organizational problems, burnout, and attrition.

Employee stress and burn out commonly lead to myriad health-related problems that result in significant organizational consequences.

There are many methods of stress management, and sometimes the best …

Teachers' Stories Of Change: Stress, Care And Economic Rationality, Chris Easthope, Gary Easthope Jan 2007

Teachers' Stories Of Change: Stress, Care And Economic Rationality, Chris Easthope, Gary Easthope

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The impact of economic rationalism on teachers’ working lives has been documented extensively, particularly in the UK. This article provides a case study of its impact in the early 1990s in a small Australian state, Tasmania, to illustrate that although the particular institutional forms through which it is expressed may differ its impact is similar. We do this by focusing on teachers' stories of change that have stress as a major theme. Stress is partially explained by increased workloads, teachers teaching outside their specialist areas and a changing student population. However, the ideology of economic rationalism has heightened stress because …

"Khmer Pride": Being And Becoming Khmer-American In An Urban Migrant Education Program, Theresa Ann Mcginnis

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This article focuses on the ways an urban migrant education program becomes a space where middle school Khmer students can explore who they are as Khmer youth living in an urban American context. I discuss how the youth are able to take a transformative, interactional stance to the literacy and sign-making practices within the program. I argue that the Khmer youth's identities are reflected within these literacy and expressive practices. Further, I suggest the experiences of these Khmer middle school children of agricultural workers provide rich examples of how immigrant youth draw on a variety of cultural resources (from urban …

The Best Defense: Why Elected Courts Should Lead Recusal Reform, Deborah Goldberg, James Sample, David E. Pozen Jan 2007

The Best Defense: Why Elected Courts Should Lead Recusal Reform, Deborah Goldberg, James Sample, David E. Pozen

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, we have seen an escalation of attacks on the independence of the judiciary. Government officials and citizens who have been upset by the substance of judicial decisions are increasingly seeking to rein in the courts by limiting their jurisdiction over controversial matters, soliciting pre-election commitments from judicial candidates, and drafting ballot initiatives with sanctions for judges who make unpopular rulings. Many of these efforts betray ignorance at best, or defiance at worst, of traditional principles of separation of powers and constitutional protections against tyranny of the majority.

The attacks are fueled in part by the growing influence …

Prosecutorial Passion, Cognitive Bias, And Plea Bargaining, Alafair Burke Jan 2007

Prosecutorial Passion, Cognitive Bias, And Plea Bargaining, Alafair Burke

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

With the number of criminal defendants exonerated by DNA evidence nearing the two hundred mark, and with multiple states flirting with death penalty moratoriums in part to avoid killing the innocent, we appear to stand at a milestone in our treatment of claims by criminal defendants that they have been wrongly convicted. Some have declared the dawn of a new movement to support claims of innocence. Others have gone so far to call the movement a revolution. Regardless of what we call this burgeoning movement-slash-revolution, it is increasingly attempting to fold in the prosecutors who have traditionally been depicted as …

Class Actions And Group Litigation In Switzerland, Samuel P. Baumgartner Jan 2007

Class Actions And Group Litigation In Switzerland, Samuel P. Baumgartner

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Class actions have gone global. Foreign parties are no longer a rarity in U.S. class litigation, among other developments. In addition to being named as defendants, foreigners increasingly form a significant part of the group of absent class members. U.S. courts have thus begun to consider some novel issues, including whether due process requires foreigners to be treated as an opt-in rather than an opt-out class; whether a judgment or settlement in the suit is capable of being enforced or recognized as res judicata abroad and thus whether class certification is justified in the first place; and whether a foreign …

Making Judicial Recusal More Rigorous, James Sample, David E. Pozen Jan 2007

Making Judicial Recusal More Rigorous, James Sample, David E. Pozen

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The right to an impartial arbiter is the bedrock of due process. Yet litigants in most state courts face judges subject to election and reelection - and therefore to majoritarian political pressures that would appear to undermine the judges' impartiality. This tension has existed for as long as judges have been elected (and, to some extent, for as long as they have been appointed, in which case campaigns often take a less public but equally politicized form). In recent years, however, this tension has become more acute. Today, state courts around the country increasingly resemble - and are increasingly perceived …

Refiguring History : The Works Of Faith Ringgold And Kara Walker, Amy Bradshaw Jan 2007

Refiguring History : The Works Of Faith Ringgold And Kara Walker, Amy Bradshaw

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I seek to investigate various elements that the works of Faith

Ringgo ld (b 1930) and Kara Walker (b 1969) have in common as well as explore the

differences. My method is to begin with an examination of the work of Ringgold on its

own and follow with an analy sis of the work of Walker. While dealing with Walker, I

continue an examination of Ringgold so that the work of both artist s and the connections

and differences between the two become clearer.
