Neighborhood Defined Feature Selection Strategy For Improved Face Recognition In Different Sensor Modalitie, Satyanadh Gundimada Jan 2007

Neighborhood Defined Feature Selection Strategy For Improved Face Recognition In Different Sensor Modalitie, Satyanadh Gundimada

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel feature selection strategy for improved face recognition in images with variations due to illumination conditions, facial expressions, and partial occlusions is presented in this dissertation. A hybrid face recognition system that uses feature maps of phase congruency and modular kernel spaces is developed. Phase congruency provides a measure that is independent of the overall magnitude of a signal, making it invariant to variations in image illumination and contrast. A novel modular kernel spaces approach is developed and implemented on the phase congruency feature maps. Smaller sub-regions from a predefined neighborhood within the phase congruency images of the training …

Blackbeards Of The Twenty-First Century: Holding Cybercriminals Liable Under The Alien Tort Statute, Jennifer J. Rho

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Comment explores whether cybercrime constitutes a violation of the law of nations under the ATS. It argues that certain acts of cybercrime may be actionable, but cybercrime as a whole has not yet reached the level of a customary international norm. Part I presents Sosa's approach for recognizing a customary international norm as a private right of action under the ATS. Part II discusses the rising significance of cybercrime and international efforts to thwart it. Part III analogizes cybercrime to one of Sosa's paradigm offenses against the law of nations-piracy-and argues that cyberspace should be viewed as the modern …

This study was an investigation of the differences between three nonequivalent groups: Group A - Beginning Counselor Students, Group B -- Beginning Practicum Counselor Students, and Group C - Graduating Counselors to measure differences between the three groups. The study was researching their responses from the Unconditional Self-Acceptance Questionnaire-Revised (USAQ-R) as an individual assessment instrument. This investigator measured the effects of gender to determine if group differences in response …

Collegiate Aviation In China: Opportunities And Challenges, Richard O. Fanjoy, Yi Gao Jan 2007

Collegiate Aviation In China: Opportunities And Challenges, Richard O. Fanjoy, Yi Gao

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The rapid growth of the aviation industry in China over the last ten years has led to a dramatic shortfall in supporting personnel and infrastructure. By 2010, the need for commercial pilots, in particular, is predicted to far outstrip current levels of production. Chinese officials have focused on collegiate aviation programs as a primary source of new pilots for their evolving aviation industry, but those institutions are already hard pressed to meet the demand. This paper examines the current structure of collegiate aviation in China as well as challenges for production growth that include the absence of a general aviation …

The Effect Of Survey-Based Sentiment Measures On The Predictability And Volatility Of Stock Returns Conditioned On The Payout Yield And Issue Yield, Darryl Philip Samsell

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Survey-based sentiment indexes from the American Association of Individual Investors, Investors' Intelligence, and the Yale University International Center for Finance show strong in-sample monthly return predictability and are strong factors in explaining the cross-sectional variation in monthly returns and in explaining the excess volatility in returns beyond that explained by cash flow fundamentals proxied by the payout yield and the issue yield from Boudoukh, et al. (2007). These finding are robust to the use of numerous methods of sentiment variable computation. Sentiment is a more significant factor during the period from January 1997 to December 2005 when U.S. stock valuations …

Bridging The Gap Between Research And Practice: Involving Group Therapists In The Development Of Clinically Relevant Research Questions And Methodologies, Mandy Schleifer Jan 2007

Bridging The Gap Between Research And Practice: Involving Group Therapists In The Development Of Clinically Relevant Research Questions And Methodologies, Mandy Schleifer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1970 Irvin Yalom published his seminal work on group therapy, in which he presented an eleven-factor theory of psychotherapy group process. Since 1970, most research on group therapeutic factors has investigated their relative importance, depending on the therapeutic setting or modality, client population, or "developmental stage" of the group. However some authors have protested that there are methodological, definitional, or content-oriented problems with extant therapeutic factor research. The present author links these three issues by understanding them as symptoms of a research-practice gap. In order to explore the limitations of existing research and consider potential remedies, she conducted a …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Older And Younger Adults' Strategies For Solving Interpersonal And Individual Everyday Problems, Joseph P. Mcfall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Individual difference characteristics (i.e., age, gender, self-efficacy beliefs, exposure to problems) and contextual characteristics (i.e., problem domain) of the everyday problem-solving process were considered in an examination of individuals' strategy effectiveness. Although prior research has examined problem-solving strategy effectiveness according to independent judges or experts (Allaire & Marsiske, 2002; Blanchard-Fields, Mienaltowski, & Baldi, 2007; Cornelius & Caspi, 1987; Galambos, MacDonald, Naphtali, Cohen, & de Frias, 2005; Marsiske & Willis, 1995), methodological weaknesses in determining the effectiveness of the strategies may have invalidated the findings. A group of seven highly reliable expert raters were recruited to provide effectiveness ratings of strategies …

Psychophysical Measures Of Detection & Discrimination And Effects Of Gaba Blockade In The Moth Manduca Sexta, Esther K. Mwilaria Jan 2007

Psychophysical Measures Of Detection & Discrimination And Effects Of Gaba Blockade In The Moth Manduca Sexta, Esther K. Mwilaria

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Olfactory systems must detect and discriminate odors while maintaining a degree of perceptual invariance of identity in a highly variable environment. Studies have suggested that olfactory systems of both vertebrates and invertebrates detect odors based on the interaction of specific molecular features of odorant molecules with olfactory receptor neurons. It has also been shown that changing stimulus concentration can elicit substantive changes in spatial representations of odorants. The first goal of our studies was to psychophysically characterize the ability of the moth Manduca sexta to detect and discriminate odors as a function of concentration using a Pavlovian olfactory-learning paradigm. Our …

A Reference Price Model Of Sugar Consumption With Implications On Obesity, Cary Marshall Effertz Jan 2007

A Reference Price Model Of Sugar Consumption With Implications On Obesity, Cary Marshall Effertz

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Obesity has increased dramatically in the past 25 years. The consumption of added sugar has increased significantly during the same time period. Previous research indicates a direct correlation between the consumption of added sugar and the prevalence of obesity. Sugar has been identified in multiple studies as having addictive or opiate-like qualities. Unquestionably, added sugar consumption has contributed to the current obesity epidemic. Here, we apply a reference price economic model to attempt to describe sugar consumption. Using consumption and price data from the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, we made a reference price estimation …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To what extent has been continuity and change in the revolutionary Iran foreign policy since 1979? This question is examining the Iranian foreign policy over the last twenty-seven-year by using two major theories in the fields of International relations and comparative foreign policy explanations. While the systemic theory, represented by neorealism theory in this research, argues that international system drives states foreign policies, domestic and statist explanations argue that domestic political factors play major role in driving and shaping states foreign behaviors. My research will use these different approaches to study the Islamic Republic foreign policy under different leaderships – …

Examining Therapists' Perceptions Of Confidentiality Across Various Therapeutic Environments, Professional Organizations, And Client Development (An Exploratory Study)., Traci Aaron Berry-Harris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Confidentiality is at the cornerstone of what can make or break the therapeutic relationship. Ethical guidelines are constantly changing, and therapists need to consider their ethical code and other variables including their state law and organizational policy when making decisions related to confidentiality. When working with clients of varying developmental levels, the decisions therapists make regarding confidentiality issues are often not clear. In addition, therapists’ views and experiences concerning confidentiality can play a large role in their decisions concerning obtaining informed consent, duty to protect, and breaching confidentiality in therapy. This exploratory study examined the differences among therapists of diverse …

For women with MS, the challenge of negotiating paid and non-paid work responsibilities often leads to difficult choices about how to navigate these changing lifeworlds. For …

Response And Time Allocation On Concurrent Variable -Interval Schedules Of Signaled And Unsignaled Reinforcement, Jeffrey Everly Jan 2007

Response And Time Allocation On Concurrent Variable -Interval Schedules Of Signaled And Unsignaled Reinforcement, Jeffrey Everly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present experiments were designed to evaluate accounts of how behavior is allocated on concurrent variable-interval (VI) VI schedules. The generalized matching law assumes that the proportion of behavior allocated to the two schedules will match the proportion of reinforcers obtained on the two schedules (Baum, 1974). An alternate view holds that under ideal conditions, behavior should "fix" almost exclusively at the richer schedule. The leaner schedule is only visited, or "sampled", when a reinforcer becomes available on that schedule (Houston & McNamara, 1981). Attempts were made to create optimal conditions for producing an ideal fix-and-sample response pattern. Pigeons were …

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole Jan 2007

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

Before The Acts: The Romantic Sublime, Gender, Art, And The Modern In Virginia Woolf's "Between The Acts"., Erin K. Johns Jan 2007

Before The Acts: The Romantic Sublime, Gender, Art, And The Modern In Virginia Woolf's "Between The Acts"., Erin K. Johns

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A moment that fills a person with awe, terror, agony, and silence is the simplest way to describe Edmund Burke s conception of the sublime, which stems from the Greek rhetorician, Longinus, and undergoes philosophical critique by Immanuel Kant. The male poets of the British Romantic period, like William Wordsworth, P.B. Shelley, and John Keats, created a literary conversation critiquing Burke s binary of the beautiful and the sublime. Although the sublime is often grounded among these poets, the contemporary critic, Anne K. Mellor, argues for a feminist reading of the sublime, which centers around female writers of the Romantic …

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle Jan 2007

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research has consistently shown a relation between attention and the experience of pain. Pain disrupts and demands attention, interfering with the ability to direct attention to other stimuli in the environment. Yet, various studies of pain management strategies, including studies which have yielded mixed results for the strategy of distraction, often have not specifically examined the relation of pain management, attention, and pain behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of different pain management strategies and the relation between strategy efficacy and attention in a laboratory pressure pain-induction experiment. Using 96 college undergraduates, the study employed …

A comparison was done with NGOs that work with violence against women in Argentina and Brazil from the 1990’s to the present day to establish if the efforts of these groups have had a positive impact given recent statistical increases. Historical background was given on the nature and severity of violence against women in these two nations. International and national conferences as well as domestic changes in legislation were examined in comparison to the historical trajectory of …

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley Jan 2007

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An estimated 3.3 (Carlson, 1984) to 10 million (Straus, 1992) children are exposed to intimate partner violence per year. Exposure to IPV has been shown to have a profound impact upon children’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. Until recently, the majority of research examining children’s experiences of IPV approached the field from a deficits perspective; choosing to examine the negative impacts IPV had upon children. This study instead explored the effects of IPV upon children from a resiliency perspective; choosing to examine the adaptive functioning children displayed despite experiencing this trauma. This study explored previously identified constructs such as maternal …
