Using Distance Education To Prepare School Administrators: Pitfalls And Effective Practice, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 2007

Using Distance Education To Prepare School Administrators: Pitfalls And Effective Practice, Theodore J. Kowalski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The employment of practitioners and the expansion of distance education courses have become controversial issues in the preparation of school administrators. In large measure, both actions have been condemned by many senior professors, primarily because they believe that college administrators have pursued them for economic reasons rather than for educational improvement. First, the merits of this perception are examined. Second, the pitfalls and promises of each issue are identified and then recommendations are made for improving practice. The potentialities of involving practitioners in professional preparation and making pre-service and in-service education more accessible via distance education will not be realized …

Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Instructional Scaffolding For Writing Instruction, Sharan A. Gibson Jan 2007

Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Instructional Scaffolding For Writing Instruction, Sharan A. Gibson

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study reports on an analysis of preservice teachers’ dialogue journal entries for evidence of ways in which teachers develop conceptual understanding for writing instruction. Teachers’ propositional statements were identified and coded at a specific level for three themes: (1) level of instructional scaffolding, (2) focus of proposed instruction, and (3) hierarchical levels of language. The study identified a set of dilemmas faced by teachers as they developed pedagogical content knowledge for writing instruction, centered on participants’ assumptions regarding a direct, causal relationship between the provision of models for effective writing and the improvement of students’ expertise for writing.

The Clep Program: An Evaluation And Assessment At A Small Private University, William Beaver, Stephen T. Paul Jan 2007

The Clep Program: An Evaluation And Assessment At A Small Private University, William Beaver, Stephen T. Paul

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) created the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) in 1965 and over the years it has become a staple of American higher education. In order to better understand the ramifications of the CLEP program, this article provides a brief history of CLEP and reexamines some of the findings of earlier research. The present study investigates new areas by addressing several research questions. For instance, what are the impacts of a student’s age, academic ability, gender, and previous learning experiences in regard to passing a CLEP exam? How much time do students spend in preparing for CLEP, …

Discrimination Across The Sectors: A Comparison Of Discrimination Trends In Private And Public Organizations, Megan K. Leasher

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Differences and similarities between public and private sector organizations have been hypothesized and researched for several decades (Murray, 1975). This study investigated the differences in claims of employment discrimination reported for employees within the private and public sectors. A longitudinal database of statewide discrimination claims was analyzed to determine if differences in employment discrimination patterns or levels exist between the sectors. Theoretical and practical implications are presented in addition to propositions for future research.

Parameters Affecting Mental Workload And The Number Of Simulated Ucavs That Can Be Effectively Supervised, Bryan A. Calkin Jan 2007

Parameters Affecting Mental Workload And The Number Of Simulated Ucavs That Can Be Effectively Supervised, Bryan A. Calkin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated performance and mental workload when an operator supervises multiple UCAVs. This study focused on the parameters that affect the operator's performance during a simulated UCAV suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) mission, which is expected to be the primary function of the UCAV. All three manipulated factors, including the number of vehicles to be supervised, vehicle airspeed, and difficulty level of attacks (targets engaged by either a single vehicle or multiple vehicles), affected both performance and subjective mental workload measures. A performance mental workload redline was defined as the point at which accomplishment scores no longer …

The Effects Of Physical Activity And A Single Gender Learning Community On The Success Of First Year College Males, Cory D. Taylor Jan 2007

The Effects Of Physical Activity And A Single Gender Learning Community On The Success Of First Year College Males, Cory D. Taylor

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970's and the passing of Title IX of the educational amendments to the Civil rights Act of 1964, the gender demographic at American colleges and universities has changed dramatically. Today the average American college or university is over 57% female, a number that is projected to exceed 60% by 2020. In addition to the fact that in comparison to their female counterparts, less male students are coming to college, we are also seeing that once in college, male students are less likely to persist through to graduation. This study investigated the effects of weekly physical activity within the …

Paths To Quality: A Child Care Quality Rating System For Indiana. What Is It's Scientific Basis?, James Elicker Jan 2007

Paths To Quality: A Child Care Quality Rating System For Indiana. What Is It's Scientific Basis?, James Elicker

Center for Families Publications

Paths to QUALITY is Indiana’s new statewide child care quality rating system (QRS), first implemented in 2008. The main components of most state QRS programs are: 1) a set of quality standards that apply to home-based and center-based child care; 2) a process for objectively assessing child care quality and maintaining accountability; 3) a system of training and technical assistance to help child care providers improve quality; 4) incentives to encourage providers to reach higher levels of quality; and 5) public information to inform parents about what the QRS is and how to use it when they make child care …

Acoustic Startle At Baseline And During Acute Alcohol Withdrawal In Replicate Mouse Lines Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Gustavo D. Barrenha Jan 2007

Acoustic Startle At Baseline And During Acute Alcohol Withdrawal In Replicate Mouse Lines Selectively Bred For High Or Low Alcohol Preference, Julia Chester, Gustavo D. Barrenha

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Previous data in both rat and mouse genetic models suggest that there is a genetic relationship between acute alcohol withdrawal responses and innate alcohol drinking behavior. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether acute alcohol withdrawal responses, as measured by acoustic startle and prepulse inhibition (PPI) of acoustic startle, may be genetically related to innate differences in alcohol preference in two mouse lines selectively bred for high (HAP1 and HAP2) or low (LAP1 and LAP2) alcohol preference. Line differences in startle responses at baseline, prior to alcohol or saline treatment, were also measured. Methods: Alcohol-naive, male …

Restorative Justice And The Pre-Conditions For Grace: Taking Victim's Needs Seriously, Ellen Waldman Jan 2007

Restorative Justice And The Pre-Conditions For Grace: Taking Victim's Needs Seriously, Ellen Waldman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This essay surveys the question of victim need from a different vantage point. It takes as its starting point the voices of actual victims as recorded by researchers in the field. It reports on three studies and the linkage they uncover between victim distress and attitudes toward justice and reconciliation. What they reveal belies a simple notion of victim need and suggests that restorativists should move warily as they seek to reshape the criminal justice system into more harmony-producing forms. Victim-offender encounters, truth-telling, and moves toward apology and reconciliation are appealing in the abstract; but data suggests that victims whose …

Strike Three - You're Out! Revamping The New York State Taylor Law In Response To Three Transport Workers' Strikes, Erin Audra Russ

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

For almost three days in late December 2005, millions of New York City commuters braved frigid temperatures as they trekked to work. Armed with their iPods and winter coats appropriate for an arctic expedition, the public walked, rode their bikes, and scooted on Segways to get where they needed to go. Some New Yorkers even did the unthinkable-they shared cabs and cars with complete strangers. These commuters did not abandon their usual overcrowded, rickety bus or subway to enjoy a very blistery winter wonderland just days before Christmas. They changed their routine because they had no choice: The Transit Workers …

Evaluation Of An Education Intervention For The Staff On The Head Of The Bed Elevation In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Randall Johnson Jan 2007

Evaluation Of An Education Intervention For The Staff On The Head Of The Bed Elevation In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Randall Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elevating the head of bed (HOB) reduces risks for aspiration and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in the adult population. Educational interventions have resulted in improvements in achieving a target HOB elevation of 30° in adults. Limited research has addressed this intervention in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The aim of this study was to determine if an educational intervention for the PICU staff would result in improvement in the HOB elevation in the PICU. Four research questions were studied: 1) What is the common practice related to the elevation of the HOB in the PICU? 2) Is there a …

Quality Of Life In Older Breast Cancer Survivors, Victoria Loerzel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quality of life (QoL) in cancer survivors is an important area of research. While data are available about QoL and breast cancer, there is a paucity of research regarding older breast cancer survivors. The purpose of this research was to examine QoL in older women with early stage breast cancer, within the first year of post-treatment survivorship. The specific aims of this study were to: 1) Describe the changes in overall QoL and the four QoL domains of Physical, Psychological, Social, and Spiritual well-being; 2) Examine the effects of a psychoeducational support intervention on QoL outcomes in older women; and …

Research Strategies To Reduce Bovine Tuberculosis Transmission From Wildlife To Cattle, Are R. Brentensen, Mike R. Dunbar, Robert G. Mclean

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mycobaterium bovis, and is transmissible to humans, wildlife and domestic livestock. In the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) serve as a reservoir for the disease and pose a significant threat to domestic cattle and captive cervids. Scientists at USDA, APHIS, Wildlife Services, National Wildlife Research Center have designed a variety of laboratory and field studies aimed at reducing or eliminating bTB infection in cattle by interrupting the transmission of the disease from wildlife reservoirs. These strategies include reducing bTB in deer by delivery of …

The Devil In The Details: On Intelligent Design, Racial Conspiracy Theories, And The Theology Of Whiteness, Brant T. Lee Jan 2007

The Devil In The Details: On Intelligent Design, Racial Conspiracy Theories, And The Theology Of Whiteness, Brant T. Lee

Akron Law Faculty Publications

It is a central problem in the great American conversation about race to explain persistent racial inequality. The dominant narrative tells us that, historically, racial inequality was caused directly and simply, by explicit and intentional racial discrimination based on unreasoning race hatred. The paradigmatic examples are slavery and segregation; the icon is Bull Connor. Together, the Civil War and the civil rights movement comprise America's delivery from this original sin. In law, this redemption is reflected in the Emancipation Proclamation and in the fulfillment of the Civil War-era constitutional amendments [FN6] through Brown v. Board of Education and the antidiscrimination …
