Equipping And Mobilizing The Laity In The New York Luso-Brazilian Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Gerson P. Santos Jan 2007

Equipping And Mobilizing The Laity In The New York Luso-Brazilian Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Gerson P. Santos

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The New York Luso-Brazilian congregation was organized on October 23, 1971, with approximately ten members. By December 2005, its membership was 329, including two new congregations formed recently. In spite of the growth during the first two or three decades, this church has not experienced much growth in the last ten years. Many members are not committed to the Great Commission. Only ten percent participate in some kind of outreach. Analyzing the profile of this church, it was verified that the growth came mainly through immigration. One of the main challenges, therefore, is to involve the laity in missionary …

Electromyographic Data Do Not Support A Progressive Recruitment Of Muscle Fibers During Exercise Exhibiting A Vo2 Slow Component, Daniel T. Cannon, Fred W. Kolkhorst, Daniel Cipriani Jan 2007

Electromyographic Data Do Not Support A Progressive Recruitment Of Muscle Fibers During Exercise Exhibiting A Vo2 Slow Component, Daniel T. Cannon, Fred W. Kolkhorst, Daniel Cipriani

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

The origin of the slow component (SC) of oxygen uptake kinetics, presenting during exercise above the ventilatory threshold (VT), remains unclear. Possible physiologic mechanisms include a progressive recruitment of type II muscle fibers. The purpose of this study was to examine alterations in muscle activity through electromyography (EMG) and mean power frequency (MPF) analysis during heavy cycling exercise. Eight trained cyclists (mean±S.E.; age=30±3 years, height=177±4 cm, weight=73.8±6.5 kg, VO2max=4.33±0.28lmin−1) completed transitions from 20 W to a workload equaling 50% of the difference between VT and VO2max. VO2 was monitored using a breath-by-breath measurement system, and EMG data were gathered from …

A Functional Calculus In A Non Commutative Setting, Fabrizio Colombo, Graziano Gentili, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa Jan 2007

A Functional Calculus In A Non Commutative Setting, Fabrizio Colombo, Graziano Gentili, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we announce the development of a functional calculus for operators defined on quaternionic Banach spaces. The definition is based on a new notion of slice regularity, see [6], and the key tools are a new resolvent operator and a new eigenvalue problem. This approach allows us to deal both with bounded and unbounded operators.

Improved Associated Conditions In Rapid Intensifications Of Tropical Cyclones, Ruixin Yang, J. Tang, Menas Kafatos Jan 2007

Improved Associated Conditions In Rapid Intensifications Of Tropical Cyclones, Ruixin Yang, J. Tang, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TC) is a major error source in TC intensity forecasting. In order to improve the estimates of RI probability, association rules are used to facilitate the process of mining for candidate sets of conditions. Compared to the relation analysis method, the technique of association rules can simply explore associations among multiple conditions. Our mining results identified a reduced predictor set with fewer factors identified in previous studies but improved RI probabilities. That is, the RI probability with three conditions satisfied: low vertical shear, high humidity, and the TC being in an intensification phase is …

Influences Of Winter Haze On Fog/Low Cloud Over The Indo-Gangetic Plains, Ritesh Gautam, N. C. Hsu, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The aerosol loading in south Asia has increased considerably because of the growing population, urbanization, and industrialization in recent years. To understand the effects of aerosols on cloud properties in this region, we have analyzed an extensive collection of aerosol and cloud properties, obtained from the Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, over the Indian subcontinent during winter 2000–2006. During these winter months, the Indo-Gangetic (IG) plains, in the northern part of India, are subjected to dense haze and fog on the basis of MODIS climatology of aerosol optical depth and cloud properties (cloud effective radius, cloud top pressure, and …

No Chance To Prove Themselves: The Rights Of Mentally Disabled Parents Under The Americans With Disabilities Act And State Law, Dale Margolin Cecka

Law Faculty Publications

This article explores the relationship between state child welfare laws that terminate parental rights and the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The article begins by analyzing the application of the ADA to termination of parental rights proceedings against parents with mental disabilities. It then surveys state child welfare laws, focusing on the treatment of parents under New York State law. The article concludes by advocating for a change to reflect the principles of the ADA in state laws and in practice.

In this Article, I argue that patents, if obtained and exploited strategically, can have a beneficial effect on university research. I will describe the barriers to university participation in the patent arena-that is, lack of money, lack of knowledge, lack of infrastructure, and cultural concerns-and explain, with reference to business, how and why universities need to overcome these barriers. By breaking down these barriers and ably exploiting their intellectual property, I argue that the obstacles to university research will be lessened, resulting in increased research and innovation. I further provide a primer to provide university administrators, technology transfer offices, and …

Ants, Elephant Guns, And Statutory Subject Matter, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga Jan 2007

Ants, Elephant Guns, And Statutory Subject Matter, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga

Law Faculty Publications

Questions about whether software qualifies for patent protection are becoming increasingly more prevalent, despite the fact the issue seemed settled. The Supreme Court has indicated its interest in the topic and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office-which had previously been liberally issuing patents in the computer-related arts-now appears to be leading the groundswell against the subject-matter eligibility of these inventions, rejecting an increasing number of applications in this area for lack of statutory subject matter. Despite the broad definitions of patentable subject matter provided by the Constitution, Patent Act, and Supreme Court, the Patent Office has grafted various additional requirements …

The Process Due Indefinitely Detained Citizens, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2007

The Process Due Indefinitely Detained Citizens, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

A very controversial feature of the "war on terror" is the scope of the power which Congress has granted President George W. Bush to designate suspected terrorists enemy combatants and indefinitely detain them. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has most fully, if not clearly, resolved this question.

The United States incarcerated two citizens with little process for more than a year in the Charleston and Norfolk naval brigs. The first litigated three habeas corpus petitions before the Fourth Circuit and a fourth to the Supreme Court before the government released him. The second convinced a …

Quantum Dot Photolithography, Raghuveer Reddy Gadipalli

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents a simple method for the photolithographic patterning of silica hydrogel monoliths and planar substrates with quantum dots and inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles. We developed a method for surface patterning and bulk (3D) patterning of silica hydrogel monoliths and surface patterning of planar substrates with CdS, CdSe, PbS and PbSe quantum dots using infrared light, ultraviolet light, X-rays, and multi-photon ionization radiation. Precursor combinations were prepared which can readily dissociate with IR, UV, X-rays, and multi-photon ionization radiation. Different capping agents were used for improving quantum dot size distribution. The luminescence quantum yield of the composites can be increased …

Post-Realist Blues: Formalism, Instrumentalism, And The Hybrid Nature Of Common Law Jurisprudence, Marin Roger Scordato Jan 2007

Post-Realist Blues: Formalism, Instrumentalism, And The Hybrid Nature Of Common Law Jurisprudence, Marin Roger Scordato

Scholarly Articles

At the beginning of the twentieth century, it was widely believed that appellate courts determined the outcome of disputed issues of law predominately by the application of pre-existing precedent and time honored legal maxims. The primary work of the common law courts was thought to be this distinctive identification, maintenance, inductive development and case specific deductive application of the body of precedent in its jurisdiction, sometimes known as formalism.

Starting with the influence of the legal realists in the 1920s, a profound shift took place in the dominant conception of the nature of common law jurisprudence. Here, at the beginning …

Performance Analysis Of Security Protocols, Praveen Kumar Donta Jan 2007

Performance Analysis Of Security Protocols, Praveen Kumar Donta

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Security is critical to a wide range of applications and services. Numerous security mechanisms and protocols have been developed and are widely used with today’s Internet. These protocols, which provide secrecy, authentication, and integrity control, are essential to protecting electronic information.

There are many types of security protocols and mechanisms, such as symmetric key algorithms, asymmetric key algorithms, message digests, digital certificates, and secure socket layer (SSL) communication. Symmetric and asymmetric key algorithms provide secrecy. Message digests are used for authentication. SSL communication provides a secure connection between two sockets.

The purpose of this graduate project was to do performance …

Library Resource Sharing In The Early Age Of Google, Beth Posner Jan 2007

Library Resource Sharing In The Early Age Of Google, Beth Posner

Publications and Research

Library information resource sharing has traditionally been organized around the physical transfer of loans and copies from one location to another. Such interlibrary loan activities have become successively easier and more efficient because of the use of various technologies. Some of the latest and most successful of these include various web-based information services, such as Google, which help to facilitate both physical delivery and online access to information resources. The challenge now facing ILL librarians is to evaluate how to best incorporate these services into their existing operations and to determine whether these constitute additional ways to help patrons access …

Digenic Inheritance Of Anion Exchanger 1 (Slc4a1) And Human Alpha Globin (Hba) Mutation Results In Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis And Hemolytic Anemia In A Thai Patient, Sookkasem Khositseth Khositseth, Jaackchai Jungthirapanich, Duangrurdee Wattanasirichaigoon, Pa-Thai Yenchitsomanus

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Background: Mutations of SLC4A1 gene encoding anion (Cl-/HCO3-) exchanger 1 (AE1) are responsible for majority of distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) in Thailand where thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies are also prevalent. It is possible that mutations in both genes may interact with each other and result in modification of hematologic phenotypes of the thalassemic patients and carriers.

Objective: To investigate AE1 and alpha-globin gene mutations in patients with dRTA concomittent with anemia and hepatosplenomegaly

Methods: A patients with dRTA and anemia with hepatosplenomegly was examined by automated CBC, peripheral blood smear analysis, osmotic fragility test, hemoglobin typing, and serum iron study. …
