Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Many professional organizations have initiatives to increase the awareness and use of informatics in the practice of pharmacy. Within education we must respond to these initiatives and make technology integral to all aspects of the curriculum, inculcating in students the importance of technology in practice. This document proposes 5 central domains for organizing planning related to informatics and technology within pharmacy education. The document is intended to encourage discussion of informatics within pharmacy education and the implications of informatics in future pharmacy practice, and to guide colleges of pharmacy in identifying and analyzing informatics topics to be taught and methods …

Seasonal Variation In Dune Vegetation At South Padre Island, Texas., Frank W. Judd, Robert I. Lonard, Kenneth R. Summy, Ruben A. Mazariegos Jan 2007

Seasonal Variation In Dune Vegetation At South Padre Island, Texas., Frank W. Judd, Robert I. Lonard, Kenneth R. Summy, Ruben A. Mazariegos

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Seasonal variation in vegetative cover, species richness, species composition and species importance were compared in the backshore and primary dunes topographic zones at a dune protection area and an unprotected site on South Padre Island, Texas, from May 2004 to April 2005. Cover was greatest in fall, but there was no significant variation among seasons in percent cover in the backshore or primary dunes at either site. Species richness was significantly greater at the dune protection site, but there was no significant seasonal variation in species richness in either topographic zone at either site. Species composition differed between topographic zones …

Refugee Roulette: Disparities In Asylum Adjudication, Andrew I. Schoenholtz, Jaya Ramji-Nogales, Philip G. Schrag

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study analyzes databases of merits decisions from all four levels of the asylum adjudication process: 133,000 decisions by 884 asylum officers over a seven year period; 140,000 decisions of 225 immigration judges over a four-and-a-half year period; 126,000 decisions of the Board of Immigration Appeals over six years; and 4215 decisions of the U.S. Courts of Appeal during 2004 and 2005. The analysis reveals significant disparities in grant rates, even when different adjudicators in the same office each considered large numbers of applications from nationals of the same country. In many cases, the most important moment in an asylum …

Affirmative Inaction, Girardeau A. Spann Jan 2007

Affirmative Inaction, Girardeau A. Spann

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Perhaps the most exasperating aspect of racial discrimination in the United States is the self-righteous manner in which it is practiced. After a history of facilitating white exploitation of minority interests, the Supreme Court intimated in Grutter v. Bollinger that time was running out for racial minorities to take advantage of the opportunities for equality that the culture has offered in the form of affirmative action. Justice O'Connor's majority opinion seemed to say that in another twenty-five years, the Court would cease to tolerate such special favors for racial minorities, thereby leaving minorities only a limited amount of time remaining …

The Impact On Director And Officer Behavior: Reflective Essays, Donald C. Langevoort Jan 2007

The Impact On Director And Officer Behavior: Reflective Essays, Donald C. Langevoort

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

I fall on the side of the skeptics about whether criminal liability in financial reporting cases is a healthy tool because I have doubts about whether judgments are likely to be proportionate. And proportionality is a very important measure in criminal law for two reasons. First, we expect the punishment to fit the crime as a matter of justice. Secondly, if we have disproportionately harsh treatment, then the behavior of officers and directors in response to over-deterrence is that they will pay too much attention to matters that are precautionary as opposed to profit-generating. And the point of a business …

Panel 1: Ksr V. Teleflex: The Nonobviousness Requirement Of Patentability, John R. Thomas, John Richards, Herbert F. Schwartz, Steven J. Lee Jan 2007

Panel 1: Ksr V. Teleflex: The Nonobviousness Requirement Of Patentability, John R. Thomas, John Richards, Herbert F. Schwartz, Steven J. Lee

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

KSR is a big case because it addresses the only significant patentability requirement that exists under U.S. law. I count four fundamental patentability requirements: statutory subject matter, utility, novelty, and nonobviousness. It is plain that in the United States statutory subject matter is as broad as human experience itself. Utility, a very lenient requirement, is also easily met in most areas of technology. Novelty too is also easily satisfied. So what we are really left with is the fundamental gatekeeper to patentability. Should the Supreme Court raise that standard, it will effectively cede a great deal of proprietary subject matter …

Optical Properties And Determination Of Thermal Transformation Parameters For Se_{0.65}Te_{0.35} High Reflectance Thin Films, Ayman Ahmed El-Amin, Aly Mohammed Badr, Foaud Abdel-Wahaab Jan 2007

Optical Properties And Determination Of Thermal Transformation Parameters For Se_{0.65}Te_{0.35} High Reflectance Thin Films, Ayman Ahmed El-Amin, Aly Mohammed Badr, Foaud Abdel-Wahaab

Turkish Journal of Physics

Chalcogenide glasses Se-Te have been prepared from the high purity constituent elements. Thin films of these materials have been deposited by vacuum evaporation. The thickness effects on the optical properties have been performed for the as-deposited films. The impact of varying thickness on the value of the optical gap is also reported and discussed. The resultant films were in amorphous nature. The reflectance and transmittance spectra were measured for the mentioned films and analyzed in the incident photon energy range from 1.16 to 2.47 eV. The refractive indices were determined as a function of wavelength via the transmittance analysis in …
