Forensics Image Background Matching Using Scale Invariant Feature (Sift)Transform And Speeded Up Robust Features (Surf), Paul N. Fogg Ii

Theses and Dissertations

In criminal investigations, it is not uncommon for investigators to obtain a photograph or image that shows a crime being committed. Additionally, thousands of pictures may exist of a location, taken from the same or varying viewpoints. Some of these images may even include a criminal suspect or witness. One mechanism to identify criminals and witnesses is to group the images found on computers, cell phones, cameras, and other electronic devices into sets representing the same location. One or more images in the group may then prove the suspect was at the crime scene before, during, and/or after a crime. …

Practical Defenses Against Bgp Prefix Hijacking, Zheng Zhang, Ying Zhang, Y. Charlie Hu Dec 2007

Practical Defenses Against Bgp Prefix Hijacking, Zheng Zhang, Ying Zhang, Y. Charlie Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Prefix hijacking, a misbehavior in which a misconfigured or malicious BGP router originates an IP prefix that the router does not own, is becoming an increasingly serious security problem on the Internet. In this paper, we conduct a first comprehensive study on incrementally deployable mitigation solutions against prefix hijacking. We first propose a novel reactive detection-assisted solution based on the idea of bogus route purging and valid route promotion. Our simulations based on realistic settings show that purging bogus routes at 20 highest-degree ASes reduces the polluted portion of the Internet by a random prefix hijack from 50% down to …

Sendorcomm: An Energy-Efficient Priority-Driven Communication Layer For Reliable Wireless Sensor Networks, Vinaitheerthan Sundaram, Jae-Woo Lee, Saurabh Bagchi, Yung-Hsiang Lu, Zhiyuan Li Dec 2007

Sendorcomm: An Energy-Efficient Priority-Driven Communication Layer For Reliable Wireless Sensor Networks, Vinaitheerthan Sundaram, Jae-Woo Lee, Saurabh Bagchi, Yung-Hsiang Lu, Zhiyuan Li

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In many reliable Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications, messages have different priorities depending on urgency or importance. For example, a message reporting the failure of all nodes in a region is more important than that for a single node. Moreover, traffic can be bursty in nature, such as when a correlated error is reported by multiple nodes running identical code. Current communication layers in WSNs lack efficient support for these two requirements. We present a priority-driven communication layer, called SeNDORComm, that schedules transmission of packets driven by application-specified priority, buffers and packs multiple messages in a packet, and honors latency …

Acceleration Of The Maturation Of Tissue Engineered Grafts By Dynamic Force Stimulation Or Gene Therapy, Shila Taylor

All Theses

Over 16 million people suffer from osteoarthritis (OA). As the body ages OA and other cartilage diseases create an imbalance of anabolic and catabolic cell activities in cartilage and or over time the cartilage is damaged and wears away which creates lesion that resulting in pain. Most clinical surgeries are either temporary or have not gone through trials to test their success. For a long term solution researchers have been looking at replacing cartilage with a tissue engineered graft. One of the major problems to date has been is the strength of the scaffold.
Natural cartilage needs loading for its …

Interfacial Coherency And Ferroelectricity Of Batio3/Srtio3 Superlattice Films, Y. L. Li, S. Y. Hu, Dmitri Tenne, A. Soukiassian, D. G. Schlom, X. X. Xi, K. J. Choi

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We studied the phase transitions, domain morphologies, and polarizations in BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Using the phase field approach, we discovered the remarkable influence of film/substrate interfacial coherency on the ferroelectricity of the SrTiO3 layers within a superlattice: it is an orthorhombic ferroelectric for an incoherent interface while it exhibits only induced polarization by the adjacent BaTiO3 layers for a coherent interface. We presented the domain morphologies within individual BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 layers which have different ferroelectric symmetries. The results are compared to ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy and variable temperature x-ray …

This invention relates to representation of one and multidimensional signal vectors in nonorgothonal domains and design of Vector Quantizers that can be chosen among these representations. There is presented a Vector Quantization technique in multiple nonorthogonal domains for both waveform and model based signal characterization. An iterative codebook accuracy enhancement algorithm, applicable to both waveform and model based Vector Quantization in multiple nonorthogonal domains, which yields further improvement in signal coding performance, is disclosed. Further, Vector Quantization in in nonorthogonal domains is applied to speech and exhibits clear performance improvements of reconstruction quality for the same bit rate compared to …

Rising Minimum Daily Flows In Northern Eurasian Rivers: A Growing Influence Of Groundwater In The High‐Latitude Hydrologic Cycle, Laurence C. Smith, Tamlin M. Pavelsky, Glen M. Macdonald, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Richard B. Lammers Dec 2007

Rising Minimum Daily Flows In Northern Eurasian Rivers: A Growing Influence Of Groundwater In The High‐Latitude Hydrologic Cycle, Laurence C. Smith, Tamlin M. Pavelsky, Glen M. Macdonald, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Richard B. Lammers

Faculty Publications

A first analysis of new daily discharge data for 111 northern rivers from 1936–1999 and 1958–1989 finds an overall pattern of increasing minimum daily flows (or “low flows”) throughout Russia. These increases are generally more abundant than are increases in mean flow and appear to drive much of the overall rise in mean flow observed here and in previous studies. Minimum flow decreases have also occurred but are less abundant. The minimum flow increases are found in summer as well as winter and in nonpermafrost as well as permafrost terrain. No robust spatial contrasts are found between the European Russia, …

Box Boats: How Container Ships Changed The World, Brian J. Cudahy Dec 2007

Box Boats: How Container Ships Changed The World, Brian J. Cudahy

Transportation

Fifty years ago—on April 26, 1956—the freighter Ideal X steamed from Berth 26 in Port Newark, New Jersey. Flying the flag of the Pan-Atlantic Steamship Company, she set out for Houston with an unusual cargo: 58 trailer trucks lashed to her top deck.

But they weren’t trucks—they were steel containers removed from their running gear, waiting to be lifted onto empty truck beds when Ideal X reached Texas. She docked safely, and a revolution was launched—not only in shipping, but in the way the world trades. Today, the more than 200 million containers shipped every year are the lifeblood of …

Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore Dec 2007

Electrical Activation Studies Of Silicon Implanted Aluminum Gallium Nitride With High Aluminum Mole Fraction, Elizabeth A. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

This research demonstrates a method for producing highly conductive Si-implanted n-type aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1-xN) alloys, and represents a comprehensive analysis of the resulting material's electrical and optical properties as a function of Al mole fraction, anneal temperature, anneal time, and implantation dose. Highly conductive alloys are critical to the fabrication of devices operating in deep UV, high-temperature, high-power, and high-frequency environments, and thus this research is significant in regard to the application of such devices. The AlxGa1-xN wafers of this study, with Al concentrations of 10 to 50%, were implanted at …

An RFID system provides a means to capture information inexpensively and accurately. This system allows real-time accessibility and delivery of object information, which helps track assets and shipments globally. A transponder integrated circuit (IC) is used for storing and retrieving information about a remote object. A passive RFID tag consists of an antenna and a radio frequency compatible transponder IC labeled, or attached, onto products for unique identification. This thesis deals with passive RFID tag antenna design and analysis of the read range performance of …

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si Dec 2007

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si

Engineering

This thesis addresses the development of a flight-ready telemetry encoder for the Alaska Student Rocket Project (ASRP) sounding rocket payload. The Frame Oriented eXpandable Integrated circuit Encoder-2007 (FOXIE-07) was developed to resolve crosstalk, timing, and thermal issues in the original FOXIE-03 encoder prototype. A pre-modulation low-pass filter was implemented between the encoder and the FM transmitter to minimize undesired sidebands from the transmitted signal. Complete testing of the FOXIE-07 encoder and pre-modulation filter was performed to certify them as flight-ready components for the SRP5 payload launch from Poker Flat Research Range in 2009.

Analysis Of A Chemically-Bonded Phosphate Ceramic As An Alternative Oilfield Cementing System For Arctic Regions, Nilesh Limaye Dec 2007

Analysis Of A Chemically-Bonded Phosphate Ceramic As An Alternative Oilfield Cementing System For Arctic Regions, Nilesh Limaye

Engineering

Novel chemically bonded phosphate ceramic borehole sealant, i.e. Ceramicrete, has many advantages over conventionally used permafrost cement at Alaska North Slope (ANS). However, in normal field practices when Ceramicrete is mixed with water in blenders, it has a chance of being contaminated with leftover Portland cement. In order to identify the effect of Portland cement contamination, recent tests have been conducted at BJ services in Tomball, TX as well as at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with Ceramicrete formulations proposed by the Argonne National Laboratory. The tests conducted at BJ Services with proposed Ceramicrete formulations and Portland cement contamination have …

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin Dec 2007

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin

Theses and Dissertations

Multiagent task assignment problem descriptors do not fully represent the complex interactions in a multiagent domain, and algorithmic solutions vary widely depending on how the domain is represented. This issue is compounded as related research fields contain descriptors that similarly describe multiagent task assignment problems, including complex domain interactions, but generally do not provide the mechanisms needed to solve the multiagent aspect of task assignment. This research presents a unified approach to representing and solving the multiagent task assignment problem for complex problem domains. Ideas central to multiagent task allocation, project scheduling, constraint satisfaction, and coalition formation are combined to …
