Predicting The Consequences Of Selecting On Prp Genotypes On Prp Frequencies, Performance And Inbreeding In Commercial Meat Sheep Populations, Wing-Young N. Man, Ronald M. Lewis, Kay Boulton, Beatrize Villanueva Jan 2007

Predicting The Consequences Of Selecting On Prp Genotypes On Prp Frequencies, Performance And Inbreeding In Commercial Meat Sheep Populations, Wing-Young N. Man, Ronald M. Lewis, Kay Boulton, Beatrize Villanueva

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Selection programmes based on prion protein (PrP) genotypes are being implemented for increasing resistance to scrapie. Commercial meat sheep populations participating in sire-referencing schemes were simulated to investigate the effect of selection on PrP genotypes on ARR and VRQ allele frequencies, inbreeding and genetic gain in a performance trait under selection. PrP selection strategies modelled included selection against the VRQ allele and in favour of the ARR allele. Assuming realistic initial PrP frequencies, selection against the VRQ allele had a minimal impact on performance and inbreeding. However, when selection was also in favour of the ARR allele and the frequency …

Chimeras: Double The Dna - Double The Fun For Crime Scene Investigators, Prosecutors, And Defense Attorneys?, Catherine Arcabascio

Faculty Scholarship

This article first explores the mythological origins of the term "chimera." It then explores the causes and scientific explanations of chimerism and the various conditions covered by the term chimera in the area of genetics. Although this article will discuss the various chimeric conditions that are thought to exist, its primary focus is on chimerism that is the result of the fusing of embryos in utero. Next, the article will discuss recent cases of chimerism - and of alleged chimerism - and how the genetic differences between chimeras and the general population came to light. It also will discuss …

"In A Case, On The Screen, Do They Remember What They've Seen?" Critical Electronic Reading In The Law Classroom, Debra Moss Curtis

Faculty Scholarship

In 2005, we produced a well-received article and presentation entitled, "'In a Case, In a Book, They Will Not Take a Second Look!' Critical Reading in the Legal Writing Classroom." The article examined the educational foundations of critical reading, as well as, critical reading techniques. The purpose was to establish that law students need instruction in critical reading. In the article, we offered creative solutions that had been successfully used in our legal writing classes. In the two years since, we have found it necessary to reconsider the problem of critical reading in the law school classroom, in light of …

Potential Effects Of Sediment Dredging On Internal Phosphorus Loading In A Shallow, Subtropical Lake, K. R. Reddy, M. M. Fisher, Y. Wang, J. R. White, R. Thomas James Jan 2007

Potential Effects Of Sediment Dredging On Internal Phosphorus Loading In A Shallow, Subtropical Lake, K. R. Reddy, M. M. Fisher, Y. Wang, J. R. White, R. Thomas James

Faculty Publications

Long-term phosphorus (P) loading to lakes has resulted in accumulation of P in sediments. Internal nutrient loading from sediments of shallow lakes such as Lake Okeechobee, Florida, has become a major concern in restoration programs. The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the potential impact of dredging on dissolved reactive P (DRP) flux out of sediments and (2) the equilibrium P concentration (EPCw) of post-dredge sediments. Intact sediment cores from one location representing P-laden mud sediments of the lake were obtained. Four simulated dredging treatments were implemented: control (no dredging-current conditions); top 30 cm; 45 cm; and 55 …

Hurricane Signals In Salt Marsh Sediments: Inorganic Sources And Soil Volume, R. Eugene Turner, E M. Swenson, C S. Milan, J M. Lee Jan 2007

Hurricane Signals In Salt Marsh Sediments: Inorganic Sources And Soil Volume, R. Eugene Turner, E M. Swenson, C S. Milan, J M. Lee

Faculty Publications

The inorganic content of 51 dated sediment cores from Mississippi River deltaic plain salt marsh wetlands peaks with the landfall of hurricanes. Variations in the inorganic sediment content demonstrate no temporal coherence with changes in either the Mississippi River suspended matter concentration or discharge, or with wetland losses on this coast. The inorganic matter brought to wetlands during hurricanes is sufficient to account for the accumulated inorganic sediment, and the volume averages 9% of the soil volume. A sediment deficit'' hypothesis, which makes a causal connection between a changing inorganic supply and the dramatically high wetland losses on this coast, …

Coastal ecosystems are increasingly dominated by humans. Consequently, the human dimensions of sustainability science have become an integral part of emerging coastal governance and management practices. But if we are to avoid the harsh lessons of land management, coastal decision makers must recognize that humans are one of the more coastally dependent species in the biosphere. Management responses must therefore confront both the temporal urgency and the very real compromises and sacrifices that will be necessary to achieve a sustainable coastal ecosystem, one that is economically feasible, socially just, and ecologically sound.

Recognition-Based Motion Capture And The Humaneva Ii Test Data, Nicholas Howe Jan 2007

Recognition-Based Motion Capture And The Humaneva Ii Test Data, Nicholas Howe

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Quantitative comparison of algorithms for human motion capture have been hindered by the lack of standard benchmarks. The development of the HumanEva I & II test sets provides an opportunity to assess the state of the art by evaluating existing methods on the new standardized test videos. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of a monocular recognition-based pose recovery algorithm on the HumanEva II clips. The results show that the method achieves a mean relative error of around 10-12 cm per joint.

Synthesis Towards Novel Boron Modified Polypeptides As Potential Hiv-1 Protease Inhibitors, Tajinder Heer Jan 2007

Synthesis Towards Novel Boron Modified Polypeptides As Potential Hiv-1 Protease Inhibitors, Tajinder Heer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Although current HIV-1 protease inhibitors on the market show high specificity, a number of side effects can result from their administration. Furthermore, quick drug resistance is developed due to mutations of the protease. Consequently, there exists a great and urgent need for the development of a novel HIV-1 protease inhibitors that have less toxicity, greater bioavailability, and exhibit distinct resistance profiles. Recent studies have shown that borinic acid HIV-1 protease inhibitors, which can act both associatively and competitively, have a higher affinity for HIV-1 protease variants than compounds that are strictly transition state analogs. Furthermore, such inhibitors were found to …

Completed Chloroplast Genome Sequence Of Welwitschia Mirabilis: Analyses Of Gene Order And Content, Skip Mccoy

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While the use of complete chloroplast genome sequences in plant classification and phylogenetic studies has increased dramatically since the publication of the first genome in 1986, the position of the Gnetales within seed plants had been problematic due to lack of data. Here I report on the first Gnetalean to have its chloroplast genome sequenced, Welwitschia mirabilis. the genome is 119,726 base pairs in length, displaying large and small single copy regions (LSC and SSC), two copies of an inverted repeat region (IR), and contains only 99 unique gene species. The genome is the most compact genome sequenced to date, …

Ultrafine Particle Initiation Of Lipid Peroxidation In Mitochondria, Josephine Kimberly Wells Jan 2007

Ultrafine Particle Initiation Of Lipid Peroxidation In Mitochondria, Josephine Kimberly Wells

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Studies have shown that car exhaust particles increase cellular oxidative stress (Li, 2002), and people who live in highly polluted areas have shown a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (Beck, 2005). Recently a theory has been developed that ultrafine particles (< 0.1 µm in diameter) contained in the atmospheric pollution are responsible for initiating the adverse effects of damage and disease (Li, 2003).

Ultrafine particles (UFP), which make up 72% of the particle concentration in the air (Beck, 2005), typically originate from sources involving combustion, such as cars, forest fires, volcanoes and industry (USDHHS, 1995). The small size and abundance of UFPs provide ample surface area with an increased absorption for damaging substances such as iron or reactive organic compounds (Beck, 2005; …

Sap Flow Characteristics Of Neotropical Mangroves In Flooded And Drained Soils, Ken W. Krauss, P. Joy Young, Jim L. Chambers, Thomas W. Doyle, Robert R. Twilley Jan 2007

Sap Flow Characteristics Of Neotropical Mangroves In Flooded And Drained Soils, Ken W. Krauss, P. Joy Young, Jim L. Chambers, Thomas W. Doyle, Robert R. Twilley

Faculty Publications

Effects of flooding on water transport in mangroves have previously been investigated in a few studies, most of which were conducted on seedlings in controlled settings. In this study, we used heat-dissipation sap probes to determine if sap flow (Js) attenuates with radial depth into the xylem of mature trees of three south Florida mangrove species growing in Rookery Bay. This was accomplished by inserting sap probes at multiple depths and monitoring diurnal flow. For most species and diameter size class combinations tested, Js decreased dramatically beyond a radial depth of 2 or 4 cm, with little sap flow beyond …
