Monarch Butterfly Oviposition On Swallow-Worts (Vincetoxicum Spp.), Richard A. Casagrande, J. E. Dacey

Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications

As black swallow-wort, Vincetoxicum nigrum L. Moench, and pale swallow-wort, V. rossicum (Kleopow) Barbar., spread throughout the northeastern United States and southern Canada, there is concern about the impact of these invasive plants on populations of the native North American monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus L. Recent laboratory studies in New York and Ontario, Canada, have found little or no oviposition by monarch butterflies on the two Vincetoxicum species. In Rhode Island, we found 10.5–21.7% oviposition on Vincetoxicum species relative to common milkweed Asclepias syriaca L. in choice tests and 11.9–20.3% in no-choice tests in 2 yr of laboratory testing. These …

Transtheoretical Principles And Processes For Quitting Smoking: A 24-Month Comparison Of A Representative Sample Of Quitters, Relapsers, And Non-Quitters, Xiaowa Sun, James O. Prochaska, Wayne F. Velicer, Robert G. Laforge

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

This longitudinal study compared 14 principles and processes of change applied by successful quitters, relapsers and non-quitters over 24 months in a representative sample of 4144 smokers in intervention and control groups. The successful quitters showed a decrease in the use of experiential processes (cognitive, affective and effective) and an increase in behavioral processes (e.g., counter-conditioning and stimulus control). The non-quitters showed little change in their use of almost all of the processes. The relapsers' use of the processes tended to initially parallel the successful quitters, but over time, their use ended up between the quitters and the non-quitters. In …

Role Of Cd36 In Platelet Function, Arunima Ghosh Jan 2007

Role Of Cd36 In Platelet Function, Arunima Ghosh

ETD Archive

CD36 is a scavenger receptor expressed on a wide variety of cells including platelets. It recognizes multiple ligands, yet its function on platelets is incompletely characterized. Endothelial cell-derived microparticles (EMP) have been identified in diseases where platelet activation plays a pivotal role. Because EMP express phosphatidylserine (PS) on their surfaces, a CD36 ligand, we hypothesized that MP may bind to platelets via a PS-CD36 interaction. Human platelets were shown to bind EMP by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Binding was significantly inhibited by anti-CD36 antibody or using platelets from CD36 null donors. We observed a significant increase in the rate …

This background paper Children’s early learning and development, sets out the theory and research underpinning children’s early learning and development in the Framework for Early Learning. The paper essentially responds to the question - how should we envision and understand the child as a young learner? The paper begins by outlining the context for early childhood care and education in Ireland by referring to our economic and social climate, the increasingly multicultural nature of society and relevant legislation and policy. Drawing on centuries of research, the modern day view of the child is one of him/her being a competent learner, …

Background

Eltrombopag is a new, orally active thrombopoietin-receptor agonist that stimulates thrombopoiesis. We evaluated its ability to increase platelet counts and facilitate treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with thrombocytopenia associated with HCV-related cirrhosis.

Methods

Seventy-four patients with HCV-related cirrhosis and platelet counts of 20,000 to less than 70,000 per cubic millimeter were randomly assigned to receive eltrombopag (30, 50, or 75 mg daily) or placebo daily for 4 weeks. The primary end point was a platelet count of 100,000 per cubic millimeter or more at week 4. Peginterferon and ribavirin could then be initiated, with continuation …

Don't Shelve The Questions: Defining Good Customer Service For Shelvers, Luke Vilelle Jan 2007

Don't Shelve The Questions: Defining Good Customer Service For Shelvers, Luke Vilelle

WRL Faculty Scholarship

Many library customers’ questions never reach designated service points such as circulation and reference desks. These questions may be addressed to personnel untrained in customer service such as student shelving staff in an academic library. This article presents data from a 2005 study investigating where and when shelvers received questions (and what types of questions they received) in Newman Library at Virginia Tech. Results showed that these students primarily received directional and item location questions. Follow-up workshops helped shelvers improve their ability to accurately refer questions when needed, and to increase their accompaniment rate when answering customers’ queries.

Dendritic Cells With Tgf-Β1 Differentiate Naïve Cd4 +Cd25- T Cells Into Islet-Protective Foxp3+ Regulatory T Cells, Xunrong Luo, Kristin V. Tarbell, Hua Yang Jan 2007

Dendritic Cells With Tgf-Β1 Differentiate Naïve Cd4 +Cd25- T Cells Into Islet-Protective Foxp3+ Regulatory T Cells, Xunrong Luo, Kristin V. Tarbell, Hua Yang

Publications

CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (T regs) are important for preventing autoimmune diabetes and are either thymic-derived (natural) or differentiated in the periphery outside the thymus (induced). Here we show that β-cell peptide-pulsed dendritic cells (DCs) from nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice can effectively induce CD4 +CD25+Foxp3+ T cells from naïve islet-specific CD4+CD25- T cells in the presence of TGF-β1. These induced, antigen-specific T regs maintain high levels of clonotype-specific T cell receptor expression and exert islet-specific suppression in vitro. When cotransferred with diabetogenic cells into NOD scid recipients, T …

A Subset Of Dendritic Cells Induces Cd4+ T Cells To Produce Ifn-Γ By An Il-12-Independent But Cd70-Dependent Mechanism In Vivo, Helena Soares, Haena Waechter, Nicolas Glaichenhaus

Publications

Interferon (IFN)-γ, a cytokine critical for resistance to infection and tumors, is produced by CD4+ helper T lymphocytes after stimulation by cultured dendritic cells (DCs) that secrete a cofactor, interleukin (IL)-12. We have identified a major IL-12-independent pathway whereby DCs induce IFN-γ-secreting T helper (Th)1 CD4+ T cells in vivo. This pathway requires the membrane-associated tumor necrosis family member CD70 and was identified by targeting the LACK antigen from Leishmania major within an antibody to CD205 (DEC-205), an uptake receptor on a subset of DCs. Another major DC subset, targeted with 33D1 anti-DCIR2 antibody, also induced IFN-γ in …

Lack Of Melanized Keratin And Barbs That Fall Off: How The Racketed Tail Of The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Eumomota Superciliosa Is Formed, Troy G. Murphy Jan 2007

Lack Of Melanized Keratin And Barbs That Fall Off: How The Racketed Tail Of The Turquoise-Browed Motmot Eumomota Superciliosa Is Formed, Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

The racket-tipped tail of the motmots is uniquely shaped and its formation has attracted much attention. Barbs that grow along the wire of the motmot’s two central tail feathers are weakly attached and shed soon after development. The cause of the weak attachment of these barbs is unclear. I induced feather growth by plucking the central tail feathers from seven turquoise-browed motmots Eumomota superciliosa and then collected the regrown feathers before the barbs along the wire had fully shed. I compared the barb-rachis junction (petiole of the ramus) along the distal flag (the racket-tip of the tail) where barbs are …

Analysis Of A Model Of Nutrient Driven Self-Cycling Fermentation Allowing Unimodal Response Functions, Guihong Fan Jan 2007

Analysis Of A Model Of Nutrient Driven Self-Cycling Fermentation Allowing Unimodal Response Functions, Guihong Fan

Faculty Bibliography

A system of impulsive ordinary differential equations is used to model the growth of microorganisms in a self-cycling fermentor. The microorganisms are being used to remove a non-reproducing contaminant that is limiting to growth at both high and low concentrations. Hence it is the concentration of the contaminant that triggers the emptying and refilling process. This model predicts that either the process fails or the process cycles indefinitely with one impulse per cycle. Success or failure can depend on the choice of microorganisms, the initial concentration of the microorganisms and contaminant, as well as the choice for the emptying/refilling fraction. …

Applying The Levels Of Conceptual Interoperability Model In Support Of Integratability, Interoperability, And Composability For System-Of-Systems Engineering, Charles D. Turnitsa

Faculty Bibliography

The Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM) was developed to cope with the different layers of interoperation of modeling & simulation applications. It introduced technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual layers of interoperation and showed how they are related to the ideas of integratability, interoperability, and composability. The model was successfully applied in various domains of systems, cybernetics, and informatics.

Mlck/Actin Interaction In The Contracting A7r5 Cell And Vascular Smooth Muscle, Sean Eric Thatcher Jan 2007

Mlck/Actin Interaction In The Contracting A7r5 Cell And Vascular Smooth Muscle, Sean Eric Thatcher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) is an enzyme that phosphorylates the serine-19 residue on myosin regulatory light chains (MLCs) which serves to activate the Mg2+-ATPase of myosin. This catalytic activity is thought to be the primary role of MLCK; however, it has recently been suggested that MLCK’s actin binding and bundling properties may also be of importance in smooth muscle contraction. In the absence of calcium and calmodulin (CaM), MLCK will bundle actin filaments with its N-terminus. During calcium influx and subsequent CaM activation, MLCK binding to actin decreases resulting in unbundling of actin filaments and allows myosin and actin …

Acquiring Three-Dimensional Data From Small Mammalian Teeth : Laser Scanning Eocene Marsupials, Nicholas E. Smith Jan 2007

Acquiring Three-Dimensional Data From Small Mammalian Teeth : Laser Scanning Eocene Marsupials, Nicholas E. Smith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Three-dimensional laser scanning is an effective method of digitization in paleontology, but has traditionally been restricted to larger specimens. The goal of this study was to develop a laser scanning technique applicable to small mammalian (< 5 mm) dentition. Modeling protocols were developed, and a morphometric error study showed the system highly accurate (percent error = 1D- 0.4%, 2D- 0.05%, 3D- 1.74%). Automation and standardization were accomplished by implementation of a multiscan platform and autosurfacing macro reducing modeling time by 60%. To highlight one morphometric application, 3D models (n=61) of three sympatric Eocene marsupials were digitized, and traditionally qualitative diagnostic characters were quantified and assessed. All but two of the 19 characters examined proved diagnostic (p < 0.05), and exploratory canonical discriminant analysis confirmed three distinct species. Incorporating type specimens revealed a familial overlap, therefore, this novel modeling technique can be employed in a full revision of early Eocene marsupials.

Shear Stress Induced Mtor Signaling In Cultured A7r5 Aortic Smooth Muscle Cell Line, Sriram Prasad Mupparaju Jan 2007

Shear Stress Induced Mtor Signaling In Cultured A7r5 Aortic Smooth Muscle Cell Line, Sriram Prasad Mupparaju

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Vascular intervention procedures such as balloon angioplasty and stent implantation lead to denudation of endothelium exposing the underlying smooth muscle layer to effects of blood shear stress. The effect of shear stress on smooth muscle cell signaling has not been studied in depth. In this study, we examined time dependent changes in activation of Akt, mTOR and p70S6k related signaling in response to orbital shear stress on cultured A7r5 cells. A7r5 cells cultured to subconfluence on 150mm culture dishes were subjected to orbital shear of 9.8dynes/cm 2 for zero, 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, 1h, 4h and 24h. The …

Population Modeling By Differential Equations, Hui Luo Jan 2007

Population Modeling By Differential Equations, Hui Luo

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A general model for the population of Tibetan antelope is constructed. The present model shows that the given data is reasonably logistic. From this model the extinction of antelopes in China is predicted if we don’t consider the effects of humans on the population. Moreover, this model shows that the population is limited. A projected limiting number is given by this model. Some typical mathematical models are introduced such as exponential model and logistic model. The solutions of those models are analyzed.

Chronic Acetaminophen Treatment Influences Indices Of Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation In The Aging Fisher 344 X Brown Norway Rat Aorta, Sarath Meduru Jan 2007

Chronic Acetaminophen Treatment Influences Indices Of Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation In The Aging Fisher 344 X Brown Norway Rat Aorta, Sarath Meduru

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

We have previously reported that aging in the Fisher 344 X Brown Norway (FBN) rat aorta is characterized by increased levels of ROS and alterations in cell signaling. Acetaminophen was found to scavenge free radicals in recent ischemia-reperfusion studies. Here we examined if chronic treatment with a therapeutic dose of acetaminophen attenuates age-associated increase in aortic ROS accumulation and signaling. FBN rats (27 month old; n=8) were subjected to 6 months of treatment with a therapeutic dose of acetaminophen (30mg/kg/day), with age-matched untreated FBN rats as controls. Protein oxidation levels were altered in control and treated aortae compared to aortae …

The Expression And Function Of Ppar And Hif-1 In Human Melanoma, Caroline Mills Jan 2007

The Expression And Function Of Ppar And Hif-1 In Human Melanoma, Caroline Mills

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The first part of my dissertation focuses on the expression and function of PPARs in human melanoma. I found that the A375 cells were significantly growth inhibited in response to PGJ2 and troglitazone treatment. HEMn-LP showed significant growth inhibition in response to troglitazone. I found that PPARγ and PPARδ mRNA is present in both the SK-Mel 28 and A375 cells. The relative level of PPARα mRNA expression is highest in SK-Mel 28 cells, ~3 fold higher relative to both the normal human melanocytes and A375 cells. PPARγ protein was ~50% higher in both SK-Mel 28 and A375 cells relative to …

Turtle Assemblages In The Eastern Panhandle Of West Virginia With An Emphasis On Pseudemys Rubriventris (Leconte), Ashley Renea Fisher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Little is known about turtle assemblages in West Virginia, especially in the eastern panhandle. The only published work on Pseudemys rubriventris (Le Conte) in the state is by Green and Pauley (1987). Pseudemys rubriventris are considered an S2 species by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources which means they are considered rare and imperiled in the state (WVDNR, Wildlife Diversity Program). Their range includes the Coastal Plains rivers of the mid-Atlantic region, from northern North Carolina to central New Jersey (Ernst et al. 1994). In West Virginia, they inhabit the Ridge and Valley physiographic province, which is the only …

Investigation Of Environmental Microorganisms Associated With The Intrinsic Microbial Contamination Of An Alcohol-Free Mouthwash, Michelle D. Trickett Jan 2007

Investigation Of Environmental Microorganisms Associated With The Intrinsic Microbial Contamination Of An Alcohol-Free Mouthwash, Michelle D. Trickett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Microbial Limits Test and Preservative Effectiveness Test were validated and completed on an alcohol-free mouthwash using standard USP recommended microorganisms and selected organisms isolated from the manufacturing environment. The microbial limits test using environmental isolates was found equivalent to the USP Microbial Limits Test currently used for release of the product. The preservative effectiveness test was performed to determine the efficacy of the parabens system against environmental isolates compared to those recommended in the USP test. In both tests Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates exhibited resistance to the preservative system. All other isolates failed to grow after …
