Facilitation By Drug States Does Not Depend On Acquired Excitatory Strength, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2007

Facilitation By Drug States Does Not Depend On Acquired Excitatory Strength, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three experiments examined the effects of drug-extinction when a drug state served as a conditional stimulus (CS) for sucrose delivery or as a positive feature for pairings between a discrete CS (e.g., 15-s light-on) and sucrose. Some conditioning models predict that drug-state will facilitate the conditional response (CR) based on an association with sucrose whether the drug is trained as a CS or as a facilitator. If so, repeated presentation of the drug state alone (drug-extinction) should decrease the CR in both situations. Nicotine (0.4 mg/kg), amphetamine (AMP, 1 mg/kg), and chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 5 mg/kg) facilitated a goal-tracking conditioned response …

The Effect Of Cpg-Odn On Antigen Presenting Cells Of The Foal, M. Julia B.F. Flaminio, Alexandre S. Borges, Daryl V. Nydam, David W. Horohov, Rolf Hecker, Mary Beth Matychak Jan 2007

The Effect Of Cpg-Odn On Antigen Presenting Cells Of The Foal, M. Julia B.F. Flaminio, Alexandre S. Borges, Daryl V. Nydam, David W. Horohov, Rolf Hecker, Mary Beth Matychak

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Cytosine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG-ODN) has been used successfully to induce immune responses against viral and intracellular organisms in mammals. The main objective of this study was to test the effect of CpG-ODN on antigen presenting cells of young foals.

METHODS: Peripheral blood monocytes of foals (n = 7) were isolated in the first day of life and monthly thereafter up to 3 months of life. Adult horse (n = 7) monocytes were isolated and tested once for comparison. Isolated monocytes were stimulated with IL-4 and GM-CSF (to obtain dendritic cells, DC) or not stimulated (to obtain macrophages). Macrophages and DCs …

The Legality Of The Use Of White Phosphorus By The United States Military During The 2004 Fallujah Assaults, Roman O. Reyhani Jan 2007

The Legality Of The Use Of White Phosphorus By The United States Military During The 2004 Fallujah Assaults, Roman O. Reyhani

ExpressO

The assaults on Fallujah by the United States military in April and November 2004 involved the use of white phosphorus. White phosphorus has extremely damaging effects on the health of victims, including severe burns and irritation of the respiratory system. This article examines whether the use of white phosphorus was a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, Protocol III to the Convention on Conventional Weapons and international humanitarian law. It concludes that the use of white phosphorus was illegal as it could be argued to be a chemical weapon, a riot control agent, or incendiary weapon. Furthermore, the methods and …

Scholarship In Action And The Expansive Mission Of Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Jan 2007

Scholarship In Action And The Expansive Mission Of Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Syracuse is a place for talent, desire, and opportunity to flourish, and that is what is at the heart of “Scholarship in Action”--the vision and agenda that emerged from our university and community-wide exploration of the Soul of Syracuse three years ago. As a concept and as a program, it is already giving us a high profile in the national search for ways higher education can address the accelerating changes in knowledge and technology and the seriousness of the challenges ahead for our society and our world.2 It is also the basis for our ambitious fundraising campaign, which is off …

Hugging The Middle: Teaching In An Era Of Testing And Accountability, 1980-2005, Larry Cuban Jan 2007

Hugging The Middle: Teaching In An Era Of Testing And Accountability, 1980-2005, Larry Cuban

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In the last quarter-century and especially the last decade, testing and accountability have come to dominate education policy at the state and national levels. The common concern about the effects of such testing is that it reshapes teaching in the classroom. But such claims do not look at the evidence of deeper classroom structures (the mix of teacher-centered and student-centered practices) in historical context. This article extends historical research in How Teachers Taught (Cuban, 1993) to the present in three metropolitan school districts. While testing and accountability have become more obvious concerns of teachers, the hybridized classroom environment documented in …

Set3p Monomethylates Histone H3 On Lysine 9 And Is Required For The Silencing Of Tandemly Repeated Transgenes In Chlamydomonas, Juan Casas-Mollano, Karin V. Van Dijk, John Eisenhart, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

SET domain-containing proteins of the SU(VAR)3-9 class are major regulators of heterochromatin in several eukaryotes, including mammals, insects, plants and fungi. The function of these polypeptides is mediated, at least in part, by their ability to methylate histone H3 on lysine 9 (H3K9). Indeed, mutants defective in SU(VAR)3-9 proteins have implicated di- and/or trimethyl H3K9 in the formation and/or maintenance of heterochromatin across the eukaryotic spectrum. Yet, the biological significance of monomethyl H3K9 has remained unclear because of the lack of mutants exclusively defective in this modification. Interestingly, a SU(VAR)3-9 homolog in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, SET3p, …

Full-Day Kindergarten: The Families Perspective, Brandy Anfang Jan 2007

Full-Day Kindergarten: The Families Perspective, Brandy Anfang

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study is to investigate why parents choose full-day kindergarten programs over half-day kindergarten programs. Five parents of full-day kindergartners elected to participate in this study. Interviews were conducted with each of the five parents in either their home or a local establishment in the spring of 2006. Interviews with their children were also conducted during the child's school day. Parents stated two major factors in deciding which kindergarten program to enroll their child in: daycare and academics.

The purpose of this study is to investigate why parents choose full-day kindergarten programs over half-day kindergarten programs. Five …
