Atp Activates A Reactive Oxygen Species-Dependent Oxidative Stress Response And Secretion Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines In Macrophages, Christiane M. Cruz, Alessandra Rinna, Henry Jay Forman, Ana L. M. Ventura, Pedro M. Persechini, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18, usually requires two signals. The first, due to microbial products such as lipopolysaccharide, initiates transcription of the cytokine genes and accumulation of the precursor proteins. Cleavage and secretion of the cytokines is mediated by caspase-1, in association with an inflammasome containing Nalp3, which can be activated by binding of extracellular ATP to purinergic receptors. We show that treatment of macrophages with ATP results in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which stimulate the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway and subsequent Akt and ERK1/2 activation. ROS exerts its effect through glutathionylation of PTEN …

Ips Pini (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Is A Vector Of The Fungal Pathogen, Sphaeropsis Sapinea (Coelomycetes), To Austrian Pines, Pinus Nigra (Pinaceae), Justin G.A. Whitehall, Jeffery S. Lehman, Pierluigi Bonello

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Sphaeropsis sapinea (Fr.:Fr.) Dyko and Sutton, is among the most common and widely distributed pathogens of conifers worldwide. S. sapinea is disseminated over short distances by rain splash and moist wind, but significant knowledge gaps regarding long-range dispersal remain. Our objective was to determine whether or not the pine engraver beetle, Ips pini Say, is a vector of the pathogen onto Austrian pines (Pinus nigra Arnold). In 2004 and 2005, individuals of I. pini were collected with pheromone traps at two locations in central Ohio (197 and 1,017 individuals for 2004 and 2005, respectively) and screened for the presence of …

Certain factors currently complicate the shift to electronic formats and challenge their widespread acceptance. Future scenarios spanning skill ecosystems, technologies and workflows, and societal implications are explored as logical outgrowths of present circumstances.

Supporting Children, Balancing Lives, Katharine K. Baker Feb 2007

Supporting Children, Balancing Lives, Katharine K. Baker

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines how U.S. child support policy validates traditional divisions of labor and thereby hinders individual attempts to achieve an acceptable work/family balance. It argues that by using the household as the relevant unit of measurement for child support purposes, family law doctrine legitimates the specialization contracts that arise within households. These specialization contracts, used most extensively in wealthy, elite households, undermine attempts to distribute caretaking and provider roles more equally between parents. The article suggest that by dispensing with the household as the relevant unit of measurement and treating all parents individually, each with a responsibility to caretake …

High Dietary Fat Intake Is Not Associated With High Levels Of Circulating Lipoproteins Or Total Cholesterol, C. Jayne Brahler, C. Wilson, Janine Baer Feb 2007

High Dietary Fat Intake Is Not Associated With High Levels Of Circulating Lipoproteins Or Total Cholesterol, C. Jayne Brahler, C. Wilson, Janine Baer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine the association between dietary intake of fats, waist to hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), and blood lipoproteins and total cholesterol (TC) using food frequency data in one group of apparently healthy, urban African American women and their daughters (n = 110). Subjects were fasted when blood was drawn, waist and hip circumferences and body weight and height were measured, and WHR and BMI were calculated.

Average daily total fat intakes were 91.46 g and 77.83 g for mothers and daughters, respectively, but average LDL levels of 104.4 g/L and 103.1 …

On The Applicability Of Random Mobility Models For Swarm Robot Movements, Siddharth Sail Feb 2007

On The Applicability Of Random Mobility Models For Swarm Robot Movements, Siddharth Sail

Theses

Random mobility models have been traditionally used to represent cellular or ad hoc movement patterns for PDA and laptop users. These models are critical for network traffic and protocol analysis. As robotics move to a paradigm where wireless network protocols are being utilized, it is unclear whether the same mobility models are applicable for analyzing these wireless network protocols. This thesis examines the similarity and differences between the traditional random mobility models and the mobility patterns exhibited by a team of randomly moving robots. Though the movements are driven by the same random functions, the robots need to detect and …

Analysis Of Powdery Mildew-Resistant Dogwood Accessions Using Aflp, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Roger J. Sauvé Feb 2007

Analysis Of Powdery Mildew-Resistant Dogwood Accessions Using Aflp, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Roger J. Sauvé

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Twenty-five dogwood accessions (one Cornus kousa, three C. kousa × C. florida hybrids, and 21 C. florida) were characterized using amplified fragment length polymorphism. Among the C. florida accessions, four were named cultivars and 17 were selections from Tennessee State University's dogwood breeding program. Amplified fragment length polymorphism band profiles obtained from 13 EcoRI/MseI (+3/+3) primer pairs showed the presence of high genetic diversity between species and within the C. florida accessions. Each accession was distinctly different from each other, and the resistant clones clustered into distinct groups.

Fathers participated in parent education programs (17%), group socializations (15%), father-only activities (6%), policy councils and program committees (9%), home visits (32% ever, 17% monthly), and in dropping children off at the Early Head Start center (24% ever, …

Cost-Effective Engineering Of A Small-Scale Bioreactor, John Tansey, Sadie R. Bartholomew Feb 2007

Cost-Effective Engineering Of A Small-Scale Bioreactor, John Tansey, Sadie R. Bartholomew

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Several methods exist for increasing the scale of cell culture in the laboratory. While these methods provide significant increases in biomass, they are often prohibitively expensive for many laboratories. We have engineered a small-scale bioreactor with a novel means of introducing oxygen through the catalytic breakdown of hydrogen peroxide using a manganese oxide catalyst. We have also adapted and modified an existing assay for dissolved oxygen to be compatible with culture conditions. In this system we have been able to culture CHO cells at densities of up to 107 cells/mL without the use of automated feedback systems.

The Concept Of Population Health Within The Nursing Profession, Sharon Radzyminski Feb 2007

The Concept Of Population Health Within The Nursing Profession, Sharon Radzyminski

Nursing Faculty Publications

Population health is a concept that has been developed over several centuries by many disciplines. Over time various aspects of the concept have dominated as issues related to behaviors and beliefs surrounding health practices have emerged. This has created a cadre of terms that are often used interchageably but have different meanings among various disciplines. This paper will review the concept of population health within the discipline of nursing and discuss its relationship with public health, community health, and population-focused care.

Prevention Of Angiotensin Ii-Induced Cardiac Remodeling By Angiotensin-(1-7), Justin L. Grobe, Adam P. Mecca, Melissa Lingis, Vinayak Shenoy, Tonya A. Bolton, Juline M. Machado, Robert C. Speth, Mohan K. Raizada, Michael J. Katovich

HPD Articles

Cardiac remodeling, which typically results from chronic hypertension or following an acute myocardial infarction, is a major risk factor for the development of heart failure and, ultimately, death. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has previously been established to play an important role in the progression of cardiac remodeling, and inhibition of a hyperactive RAS provides protection from cardiac remodeling and subsequent heart failure. Our previous studies have demonstrated that overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) prevents cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy during chronic infusion of angiotensin II (ANG II). This, coupled with the knowledge that ACE2 is a key enzyme in the …

Enhancing Nest Sites For Native Bee Crop Pollinators, Mace Vaughan, Scott Hoffamn Black Feb 2007

Enhancing Nest Sites For Native Bee Crop Pollinators, Mace Vaughan, Scott Hoffamn Black

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

The European honey bee receives most of the credit for crop pollination, but the number of managed honey bee hives is half of what it was in the 1950s; and this number continues to decline primarily because of honey bee pests and diseases. Native bees, however, contribute significantly to crop pollination and, on farms with sufficient natural habitat located nearby, may even provide all of the required pollination for some crops. In order to support the native bee community, it is essential to provide nesting sites in addition to floral resources. Unfortunately, intensively managed farm landscapes often lack the untilled …
