The Role Of Bone Marrow Derived Cells In A Model Of Hepatic Regeneration, Maria Mazzeo Mar 2007

The Role Of Bone Marrow Derived Cells In A Model Of Hepatic Regeneration, Maria Mazzeo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

To examine the relationship between liver injury and the appearance of bone marrow derived hepatic cells we performed sex-mismatched bone marrow transplants in mice, with subsequent liver injury. Co-labeling for a marker of donor bone marrow origin and a marker of liver epithelial phenotype allowed us to identify rare marrow-derived hepatocytes at various time points following liver damage. The number of marrow-derived hepatocytes was low, however, and did not allow us to determine if liver-specific injury upregulated this process from baseline. We conclude that while marrow-derived hepatocytes are found, the low level of occurrence in this study makes it impossible …

Developing Standards For Dissolved Iron In Seawater, Kenneth Johnson, Virginia Elrod, Steve Fitzwater, Joshua Plant, Edward Boyle, Bridget Bergquist, Kristen N. Buck

Marine Science Faculty Publications

In nearly a dozen open‐ocean fertilization experiments conducted by more than 100 researchers from nearly 20 countries, adding iron at the sea surface has led to distinct increases in photosynthesis rates and biomass. These experiments confirmed the hypothesis proposed by the late John Martin [Martin, 1990] that dissolved iron concentration is a key variable that controls phytoplankton processes in ocean surface waters However, the measurement of dissolved iron concentration in seawater remains a difficult task [Bruland and Rue, 2001] with significant interlaboratory differences apparent at times. The availability of a seawater reference solution with well‐known dissolved …

Fairfax County's Commitment: A Housing And Health Continuum For Seniors, Judith D. Moore, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

This one-day site visit focused on the range of services made available to seniors by Fairfax County, Virginia, including senior centers, adult day health care, and assisted living and independent housing. Services to low-income residents were emphasized. Participants were introduced to the different agencies and funding streams involved and were able to observe how county officials have acted on a stated commitment to help seniors who wish to age in place, staying in the county and in their own homes rather than in a nursing home or other institution. The day included tours of two Fairfax County multiservice sites, in …

Semiparametric Bivariate Quantile-Quantile Regression For Analyzing Semi-Competing Risks Data, Daniel O. Scharfstein, James M. Robins, Mark Van Der Laan Mar 2007

Semiparametric Bivariate Quantile-Quantile Regression For Analyzing Semi-Competing Risks Data, Daniel O. Scharfstein, James M. Robins, Mark Van Der Laan

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper, we consider estimation of the effect of a randomized treatment on time to disease progression and death, possibly adjusting for high-dimensional baseline prognostic factors. We assume that patients may or may not have a specific type of disease progression prior to death and those who have this endpoint are followed for their survival information. Progression and survival may also be censored due to loss to follow-up or study termination. We posit a semi-parametric bivariate quantile-quantile regression failure time model and show how to construct estimators of the regression parameters. The causal interpretation of the parameters depends on …

Nmr Structural Characterization Of Substrates Bound To N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase V, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Maria Kamar, Gerardo Alvarez-Manilla, Andre Venot, John Glushka, J. Michael Pierce, James H. Prestegard Mar 2007

Nmr Structural Characterization Of Substrates Bound To N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase V, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Maria Kamar, Gerardo Alvarez-Manilla, Andre Venot, John Glushka, J. Michael Pierce, James H. Prestegard

Faculty Publications

N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase V (GnT-V) is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of asparagine-linked oligosaccharides. It is responsible for the transfer of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) from the nucleotide sugar donor, uridine 5'-diphospho-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), to the 6 position of the α-1-6 linked Man residue in N-linked oligosaccharide core structures. GnT-V up-regulation has been linked to increased cancer invasiveness and metastasis and, appropriately, targeted for drug development. However, drug design is impeded by the lack of structural information on the protein and the way in which substrates are bound. Even though the catalytic domain of this type II membrane protein can be expressed in mammalian …

An Artificial Immune System-Inspired Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm With Application To The Detection Of Distributed Computer Network Intrusions, Charles R. Haag Mar 2007

An Artificial Immune System-Inspired Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm With Application To The Detection Of Distributed Computer Network Intrusions, Charles R. Haag

Theses and Dissertations

Today's predominantly-employed signature-based intrusion detection systems are reactive in nature and storage-limited. Their operation depends upon catching an instance of an intrusion or virus after a potentially successful attack, performing post-mortem analysis on that instance and encoding it into a signature that is stored in its anomaly database. The time required to perform these tasks provides a window of vulnerability to DoD computer systems. Further, because of the current maximum size of an Internet Protocol-based message, the database would have to be able to maintain 25665535 possible signature combinations. In order to tighten this response cycle within storage constraints, …

Biological Cell Identification By Integrating Micro-Fluidics, Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy And Stochastic Estimation, Karl R. Schwenn Mar 2007

Biological Cell Identification By Integrating Micro-Fluidics, Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy And Stochastic Estimation, Karl R. Schwenn

Theses and Dissertations

The integration of micro-fluidics, electrical impedance spectroscopy and stochastic estimation will lead to a device with enhanced detection capabilities. The goal of this thesis was to build a micro-fluidic electrical impedance measurement device that can be used in combination with a stochastic estimator to accurately identify living cells. A microdevice capable of making impedance measurements on individual living cells was designed and built using a series of standard microelectronic fabrication techniques. A microchannel was patterned in SU-8 photoresist between two gold microelectrodes on a two inch Pyrex 7740 wafer. The design process, the fabrication techniques for the microchannel, the fluid …

Inverse Regulation Of Biofilm Formation And Swarming Motility By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pa14, Nicky C. Caiazza, Judith H. Merritt, Kimberly M. Brothers, George A. O'Toole Mar 2007

Inverse Regulation Of Biofilm Formation And Swarming Motility By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pa14, Nicky C. Caiazza, Judith H. Merritt, Kimberly M. Brothers, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

We previously reported that SadB, a protein of unknown function, is required for an early step in biofilm formation by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Here we report that a mutation in sadB also results in increased swarming compared to the wild-type strain. Our data are consistent with a model in which SadB inversely regulates biofilm formation and swarming motility via its ability both to modulate flagellar reversals in a viscosity-dependent fashion and to influence the production of the Pel exopolysaccharide. We also show that SadB is required to properly modulate flagellar reversal rates via chemotaxis cluster IV (CheIV cluster). …

Food Science and Nutrition

The fetal origins hypothesis states that nutritional deprivation in utero affects fetal development and contributes to the incidence of diseases associated with the metabolic syndrome in later life. This study investigated whether haemoglobin (Hb) A1c, an indicator of blood glucose, varied among healthy male adolescents according to their fetal growth rate, in a middle-income setting. Participants were men aged 18 years, belonging to the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort. Complete data, including gestational age and Hb A1c at age 18 years, were available for 197 individuals. There was an inverse association between mean Hb A1c and birthweight …

The discovery of the unique catalytic effects of gold nanoparticles on oxide substrates[1] has stimulated a flurry of research into the structures and properties of free gold nanoclusters, which may hold the key to elucidating the catalytic mechanisms of supported gold clusters. One of the most remarkable results has been the discovery of planar gold cluster anions (Aun-) of up to twelve gold atoms and the 2D to 3D transition for clusters with n larger than 12.[2]– [4] Among larger gold clusters, Au20 has been found to be a perfect tetrahedron.[5] A more recent study of …

The Equality Paradise: Paradoxes Of The Law’S Power To Advance Equality, Marcia L. Mccormick Mar 2007

The Equality Paradise: Paradoxes Of The Law’S Power To Advance Equality, Marcia L. Mccormick

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This paper will compare the history of two of the three major civil rights movements in the United States, comparing the victories and defeats, and their results. The movement for Black civil rights and for women's rights followed essentially the same pattern and used similar strategies. The gay and lesbian civil rights movement, on the other hand, followed some of the same strategies but has differed in significant ways. Where each movement has attained success and where each has failed demonstrates the limits of American legal structures to effectuate social change.

Protecting Gay And Lesbian Families From Eviction From Their Homes: The Quest For Equality For Gay And Lesbian Families In Braschi V. Stahl Associates, Paris R. Baldacci

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

As indicated above, much of the Author's professional life has been involved in writing about and litigating Braschi-related matters. However, the theme of this Conference-how law and its practitioners affect issues of freedom, equality, and justice-has given the Author the opportunity to begin to address questions raised when the Author first watched the tape of the Braschi oral argument and then read the ACLU briefs, but which the Author has not had the opportunity to address since then. Those questions are: 1) What role did Braschi's lawyers play in the Court's formulation of a functional definition of family? 2) Was …
