Adhesion-Delamination Mechanics Of A Prestressed Rectangular Film Adhered Onto A Rigid Substrate, Ming Fung Wong, Gang Duan, Kai-Tak Wan Mar 2007

Adhesion-Delamination Mechanics Of A Prestressed Rectangular Film Adhered Onto A Rigid Substrate, Ming Fung Wong, Gang Duan, Kai-Tak Wan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A prestressed rectangular film clamped at both ends delaminates from a rigid punch. based on a thermodynamic energy balance, the delamination mechanics is derived to relate the simultaneous external tensile force applied to the punch, punch displacement, and contact area. Effects of the coupled tensile residual membrane stress and adhesion energy at the punch-film interface are investigated. a "pinch off" (stable shrinking of the contact area to a line) is predicted, contrasting the nonzero "pull-off" radius in a clamped circular film. the model is useful in understanding the behavior of various adhesion-delamination phenomena, especially in one dimensional capacitive microelectromechanical systems …

Candidate Sex Pheromones Of The New World Screwworm Cochliomyia Hominivorax, D.A. Carlson, Dennis Berkebile, S.R. Skoda, K. Mori, S. Mihok

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Five novel homologous acetate derivatives of long-chain secondary alcohols and a related ketone were tested for their efficacy as contact mating stimulants for Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Full copulatory behaviour at a high percentage was found in tests with racemic 6-acetoxy-19-methylnonacosane at 2.5 – 20 μg using fertile males from three strains. Males of two strains responded nearly as well to 7-acetoxy-15-methylnonacosane, but an older strain first colonized in 1992 did not respond to this compound. Few or no copulatory responses were obtained to the other secondary alcohol acetates and a related ketone. These two acetate derivatives are the …

Use Of Tabu Search In A Solver To Map Complex Networks Onto Emulab Testbeds, Jason E. Macdonald Mar 2007

Use Of Tabu Search In A Solver To Map Complex Networks Onto Emulab Testbeds, Jason E. Macdonald

Theses and Dissertations

The University of Utah's solver for the testbed mapping problem uses a simulated annealing metaheuristic algorithm to map a researcher's experimental network topology onto available testbed resources. This research uses tabu search to find near-optimal physical topology solutions to user experiments consisting of scale-free complex networks. While simulated annealing arrives at solutions almost exclusively by chance, tabu search incorporates the use of memory and other techniques to guide the search towards good solutions. Both search algorithms are compared to determine whether tabu search can produce equal or higher quality solutions than simulated annealing in a shorter amount of time. It …

The Nestin Progenitor Lineage Is The Compartment Of Origin For Pancreatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia, Catherine Carriere, Elliot S. Seeley, Tobias Goetze, Daniel S. Longnecker, Murray Korc Mar 2007

The Nestin Progenitor Lineage Is The Compartment Of Origin For Pancreatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia, Catherine Carriere, Elliot S. Seeley, Tobias Goetze, Daniel S. Longnecker, Murray Korc

Dartmouth Scholarship

To determine the cell compartment in which initial oncogenic mutations occur in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), we generated a mouse model in which endogenous expression of mutated Kras (Kras(G12D)) was initially directed to a population of pancreatic exocrine progenitors characterized by the expression of Nestin. Targeting of oncogenic Kras to such a restricted cell compartment was sufficient for the formation of pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs), putative precursors to PDAC. PanINs appeared with the same grade and frequency as observed when Kras(G12D) was targeted to the whole pancreas by a Pdx1-driven Cre recombinase strategy. Thus, the Nestin cell lineage is highly …

While many studies have examined the barrier effects of large rivers on animal dispersal and gene flow, few studies have considered the barrier effects of small streams. We used displacement experiments and analyses of genetic population structure to examine the effects of first-order and second-order streams on the dispersal of terrestrial red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus (Green, 1818). We marked red-backed salamanders from near the edges of one first-order stream and one second-order stream, and experimentally displaced them either across the stream or an equal distance farther into the forest. A comparison of return rates indicated that both streams were partial …

A Pure Population Of Lung Alveolar Epithelial Type Ii Cells Derived From Human Embryonic Stem Cells, Dachun Wang, David L Haviland, Alan R Burns, Eva Zsigmond, Rick A Wetsel Mar 2007

A Pure Population Of Lung Alveolar Epithelial Type Ii Cells Derived From Human Embryonic Stem Cells, Dachun Wang, David L Haviland, Alan R Burns, Eva Zsigmond, Rick A Wetsel

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cells are small, cuboidal cells that constitute approximately 60% of the pulmonary alveolar epithelium. These cells are crucial for repair of the injured alveolus by differentiating into alveolar epithelial type I cells. ATII cells derived from human ES (hES) cells are a promising source of cells that could be used therapeutically to treat distal lung diseases. We have developed a reliable transfection and culture procedure, which facilitates, via genetic selection, the differentiation of hES cells into an essentially pure (>99%) population of ATII cells (hES-ATII). Purity, as well as biological features and morphological characteristics …

Hydrodynamic And Rheology Of Active Polar Filaments, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. Cristina Marchetti Mar 2007

Hydrodynamic And Rheology Of Active Polar Filaments, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. Cristina Marchetti

Physics - All Scholarship

The cytoskeleton provides eukaryotic cells with mechanical support and helps them perform their biological functions. It is a network of semiflexible polar protein filaments and many accessory proteins that bind to these filaments, regulate their assembly, link them to organelles and continuously remodel the network. Here we review recent theoretical work that aims to describe the cytoskeleton as a polar continuum driven out of equilibrium by internal chemical reactions. This work uses methods from soft condensed matter physics and has led to the formulation of a general framework for the description of the structure and rheology of active suspension of …

Modified Test Statistics By Inter-Voxel Variance Shrinkage With An Application To Fmri, Shu-Chih Su, Brian Caffo, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Susan Bassett

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive technique which is commonly used to quantify changes in blood oxygenation and flow coupled to neuronal activation. One of the primary goals of fMRI studies is to identify localized brain regions where neuronal activation levels vary between groups. Single voxel t-tests have been commonly used to determine whether activation related to the protocol differs across groups. Due to the generally limited number of subjects within each study, accurate estimation of variance at each voxel is difficult. Thus, combining information across voxels in the statistical analysis of fMRI data is desirable in order …

Asil Guide To Electronic Resources For International Law: International Environmental Law, Anne E. Burnett

Articles, Chapters and Online Publications

This chapter of the ASIL Guide to Electronic Resources for International Law discusses electronic resources of international environmental law. The types of resources covered emphasize the Internet but also include CD-ROMs, library catalogs, and on-line subscription/commercial services. The emphasis here is on English-language sources. Although a number of primary and secondary sources are discussed below, the rapidly expanding list of electronic resources in this field precludes any claim to this being an inclusive guide. With that in mind, search strategies for conducting research in this area are included in Section III.

Unraveling The Catalytic Mechanism Of Nitrile Hydratases, Sanghamitra Mitra, Richard C. Holz Mar 2007

Unraveling The Catalytic Mechanism Of Nitrile Hydratases, Sanghamitra Mitra, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

To elucidate a detailed catalytic mechanism for nitrile hydratases (NHases), the pH and temperature dependence of the kinetic constants kcat and Km for the cobalt-type NHase from Pseudonocardia thermophila JCM 3095 (PtNHase) were examined. PtNHase was found to exhibit a bell-shaped curve for plots of relative activity versus pH at pH 3.2–11 and was found to display maximal activity between pH 7.2 and 7.8. Fits of these data provided pKES1 and pKES2 values of 5.9 ± 0.1 and 9.2 ± 0.1 (kcat′ = 130 ± 1 …

The Effects Of Orthophosphate As A Copper Corrosion Control Inhibitor In High Alkalinity Drinking Water Systems, Stephen Grace Mar 2007

The Effects Of Orthophosphate As A Copper Corrosion Control Inhibitor In High Alkalinity Drinking Water Systems, Stephen Grace

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to investigate orthophosphate as a corrosion inhibitor for copper pipe in a high-alkalinity drinking water system. Specifically, this thesis sought to answer three research questions regarding the impact of orthophosphate treatment, the nature of the mechanism by which orthophosphate controls copper corrosion, and the value of equilibrium modeling in predicting orthophosphate’s effects. The research questions were answered through a comprehensive literature review and experimental methodology integrating laboratory jar tests, water sampling and analysis from a field investigation, qualitative solids analysis, and equilibrium model application. This study analyzed field data obtained over the course of …
