Biogeochemical Stoichiometry Of Antarctic Dry Valley Ecosystems, J. E. Barrett, R. A. Virginia, W. B. Lyons, D. M. Mcknight, J. C. Priscu, P. T. Doran, A. G. Fountain, D. H. Wall, D. L. Moorhead

Faculty Publications

Among aquatic and terrestrial landscapes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, ecosystem stoichiometry ranges from values near the Redfield ratios for C:N:P to nutrient concentrations in proportions far above or below ratios necessary to support balanced microbial growth. This polar desert provides an opportunity to evaluate stoichiometric approaches to understand nutrient cycling in an ecosystem where biological diversity and activity are low, and controls over the movement and mass balances of nutrients operate over 10-106 years. The simple organisms (microbial and metazoan) comprising dry valley foodwebs adhere to strict biochemical requirements in the composition of their biomass, and when activated …

A Bayesian Hierarchical Model For Spot Fluorescence In Microarrays, Federico Mattia Stefanini Mar 2007

A Bayesian Hierarchical Model For Spot Fluorescence In Microarrays, Federico Mattia Stefanini

COBRA Preprint Series

Microarray experiments are characterized by the presence of many sources of experimental bias and a remarkably large technical variability. The assessment of differential expression for genes transcribed into a small number of mRNA copies heavily depends on the proper quantification of background fluorescence within spot. The rough model `observed = hybridization plus background' fluorescence is at first reformulated at spot level, then it is embedded into a Bayesian hierarchical model suited for fitting control spots. The novelties of the approach include the background correction performed on the latent mean of replicated spots, and an explicit model for outlying observations at …

Pain Recall In Primary Dysmenorrhea, Robyn A. Drach Mar 2007

Pain Recall In Primary Dysmenorrhea, Robyn A. Drach

Theses and Dissertations

A fundamental issue hindering research in the area of primary dysmenorrhea is the lack of a gold standard for the diagnosis and assessment of dysmenorrhea. The current study seeks to further the research in the area of memory for menstrual pain and proposes a method of assessment for dysmenorrhea. In addition, this study provides preliminary data for the development of a measure specific to dysmenorrhea. Women with painful menstruation and women with low pain during menstruation were assessed twice, during menstruation and two weeks later, using three different assessment instruments. Participants (N=43) ranged in age from 18 to 24. In …

Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson Mar 2007

Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations

Many companies use product families in order to offer product variants that appeal to different market segments while minimizing costs. Because the market demand is generally not uniform for all possible product variants, during the design phase a decision must be made as to which variants will be offered and how many. This thesis presents a new approach to solving this problem. The product is defined in terms of performance parameters. The market demand is captured in a preference model and applied to these parameters in order to represent the total potential market. The number and placement of the product …

Frequency Of Sublethal Injury In A Deepwater Ophiuroid, Ophiacantha Bidentata, An Important Component Of Western Atlantic Lophelia Reef Communities, R. Allen Brooks, Martha S. Nizinski, Steve W. Ross, Kenneth J. Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The occurrence and relative abundance of tissue (arm) regeneration in the ophiuroid, Ophiacantha bidentata (Retzius), was examined in individuals collected primarily among colonies of the deep-water coral Lophelia pertusa off the southeastern United States. Seven deep-water coral sites (384–756 m), located between Cape Lookout, NC, and Cape Canaveral, FL, were sampled in June 2004 using a manned submersible. The presence of regenerative tissue was evaluated by visual inspection of each individual ophiuroid, and the proportion of regenerating arms per individual was examined relative to size of individual, geographic location, and depth of collection. Ophiacantha bidentata, the dominant brittle star collected, …

Phosphorylation And Regulation Of The Dopamine Transporter By Psychostimulant Substrates And Protein -Protein Interactions, Mark A. Cervinski Mar 2007

Phosphorylation And Regulation Of The Dopamine Transporter By Psychostimulant Substrates And Protein -Protein Interactions, Mark A. Cervinski

Theses and Dissertations

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is an integral membrane protein that clears dopamine (DA) from the synaptic space following neurotransmission. DATs amino acid sequence contains numerous serine, threonine and tyrosine residues, some of which are located in protein kinase consensus sites. While DAT phosphorylation and regulation in response to protein kinase C activation is well documented, evidence suggests that multiple signals and interacting proteins also mediate these processes. Previous research has also demonstrated that DAT regulation is influenced by the presence of the DAT substrates amphetamine (AMPH), methamphetamine (METH) and the uptake blocker cocaine. Using 32PO4 metabolic labeling and [3H]DA uptake …

Optimism As A Buffer Against The Negative Impact Of Discrimination, Betsi Little Mar 2007

Optimism As A Buffer Against The Negative Impact Of Discrimination, Betsi Little

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that the general expectancy for positive outcomes, optimism, has been linked closely with the ability to positively cope with adverse life events, such as cancer, stress and depression. Being discriminated against has been shown to be a stressful event that has a negative psychological impact such as lowering self-esteem. Traits that have been linked with optimism, such as hardiness and self-efficacy have also been found to help combat the effects of discrimination among women. Although these traits implicate the role of optimism, to date, the possible effect of optimism itself as a buffer against the negative effects …

Decreased Renal Basement Membrane Thickening Is Accompanied By Elevated Renal Antioxidants In The Ames Dwarf Mouse Model Of Delayed Aging, Mandy M. Meyer Mar 2007

Decreased Renal Basement Membrane Thickening Is Accompanied By Elevated Renal Antioxidants In The Ames Dwarf Mouse Model Of Delayed Aging, Mandy M. Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental evidence suggests that disease- and age-related thickening of glomerular (GBM) and tubular (TBM) basement membranes may be related to increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Studies also suggest that antioxidants may function as renoprotectants against such ROS-induced damage. The current study focuses on metallothionein-I/II (MT-I/II) and glutathione (GSH), both of which exhibit potent antioxidant functions. Ames dwarf mice, which exhibit elevated tissue antioxidant levels (catalase, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, GSH) and an average life span significantly greater (50-65%) than wild type controls, were used to test our hypothesis that increased levels of renal MT-I/II and GSH are concomitant with decreased …

Internalized Racism As A Moderator For Stereotype Threat: Effects On Self-Handicapping, Performance, And Cardiovascular Responses In Black Individuals, Nicole Ellis Jagusztyn Mar 2007

Internalized Racism As A Moderator For Stereotype Threat: Effects On Self-Handicapping, Performance, And Cardiovascular Responses In Black Individuals, Nicole Ellis Jagusztyn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between internalized racism, stereotype threat, self-handicapping, test performance, and cardiovascular responses in Black individuals. Stereotype threat, or apprehension about confirming a negative stereotype, has been shown to lead to self-handicapping, poor academic performance, as well as increased cardiovascular reactivity. Internalized racism, or the acceptance of negative stereotypes about one's group, is a factor that may moderate these relationships. One-hundred nine (84% female, 16% male) Black undergraduates participated in a laboratory study. Half of the participants were put in a stereotype-threatened condition and the other half were in a neutral …

Academic Capitalism In The Social Sciences: Faculty Responses To The Entrepreneurial University, Deanna Barcelona Bullard Mar 2007

Academic Capitalism In The Social Sciences: Faculty Responses To The Entrepreneurial University, Deanna Barcelona Bullard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores how faculty in the social sciences experience and respond to academic capitalism. Academic capitalism is about market and market-like activity at the university and professorial efforts to secure external money. This research expands existing literature which has focused on the hard or natural sciences, and other areas more closely aligned with the market.

Thirty-seven qualitative research interviews were conducted between March and July of 2006 with professors of sociology, criminology, economics at the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of South Florida. Results reveal academic capitalism in the social sciences is mostly about grant …
