Psychometric Testing Of The Walker's Feelings And Thoughts About Weight Scale In Taiwan, Shu-Wen Chang Phd Apr 2007

Psychometric Testing Of The Walker's Feelings And Thoughts About Weight Scale In Taiwan, Shu-Wen Chang Phd

Dissertations

Background: The majority of women do not return to their pre-pregnant weight after six weeks postpartum in Taiwan. Excessive postpartum weight retention or gain can lead to long-term obesity and increase a woman's risk of major health problems. Trends among Taiwanese women reveal an increasing prevalence of obesity. Limiting postpartum weight retention is important for preventing long-term obesity development. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of postpartum weight gain among Taiwanese women using the modified Thriving Model (Walker & Kim, 2002) as the guiding conceptual framework and to examine the psychometric properties of a Chinese Version …

Navy Nurses' Experiences During Operation Unified Assistance Aboard The Usns Mercy: A Grounded Theory Study, Angelica L.C. Almonte Phd

Dissertations

On December 26, 2004, the most powerful earthquake in 40 years erupted under the Indian Ocean triggering a deadly tsunami that devastated 11 Asian and African countries and killed more than 280,000. The US Navy responded through Operation Unified Assistance (OUA). In a historic first on the hospital ship USNS MERCY, the U.S. Navy deployed one team with members from the Navy, the U.S Public Health Service, a non-government organization (NGO), and a civilian mariner crew to provide humanitarian aid. Despite these efforts, there is a dearth of scholarly research work published on nurses' experiences during the disaster. The purpose …

What’S So Hard About Algebra? A Grounded Theory Study Of Adult Algebra Learners, Michael Steele Reese Edd Apr 2007

What’S So Hard About Algebra? A Grounded Theory Study Of Adult Algebra Learners, Michael Steele Reese Edd

Dissertations

In California community colleges, fewer than half of students who enroll in basic algebra courses finish with a grade of C or better. Such a low success rate creates an intense demand on institutional resources, including faculty efforts, tutorial services, classroom availability, and financial aid. Furthermore, students who do poorly in algebra also tend to struggle in other quantitative courses. While research suggests that child algebra learners tend to exhibit specific misconceptions, not much is known about misconceptions held by adult algebra learners. Research does indicate, however, that certain general learning characteristics are common among adult learners. The present study …

The Evolution Of Modern North Carolina Environmental And Conservation Policy Legislation, Milton S. Heath Jr., Alex L. Hess Iii Apr 2007

The Evolution Of Modern North Carolina Environmental And Conservation Policy Legislation, Milton S. Heath Jr., Alex L. Hess Iii

Campbell Law Review

This essay ... will trace the evolution and legislative history of modern environmental policy declarations and their interaction with earlier conservation policy declarations. It will also examine two topics that illustrate the evolution of environmental policy through legislation on subjects that are important elements of environmental law: interbasin transfers of water and intergovernmental pollution control law (the "Hardison Amendments"). These two topics were selected to illustrate policy developments reflected in the legislation itself rather than in policy declarations because each of them has had significant legal and political consequences.

Signaling Through Galphai2 Protein Is Required For Recruitment Of Neutrophils For Antibody-Mediated Elimination Of Larval Strongyloides Stercoralis In Mice., Udaikumar M. Padigel, Louis Stein, Kevin Redding, James J. Lee, Thomas J. Nolan, Gerhard A. Schad, Lutz Birnbaumer, David Abraham

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding protein Galphai2 is involved in regulation of immune responses against microbial and nonmicrobial stimuli. Galphai2-/- mice have a selectively impaired IgM response consistent with a disorder in B cell development yet have augmented T cell effector function associated with increased production of IFN-gamma and IL-4. The goal of the present study was to determine if a deficiency in the Galphai2 protein in mice would affect the protective immune response against Strongyloides stercoralis, which is IL-4-, IL-5-, and IgM-dependent. Galphai2-/- and wild-type mice were immunized and challenged with S. stercoralis larvae and analyzed for protective immune responses …

Network Rules, Susan P. Crawford Apr 2007

Network Rules, Susan P. Crawford

Law and Contemporary Problems

Crawford compares the debate between the telcos and the online companies over broadband access regimes often called the "network neutrality" debate to the ongoing tussle between intellectual property maximalists and "free culture" advocates which are strikingly parallel sets of arguments. The maximalists claim that creativity comes from lone genuises (the romantic author) who must be given legal incentives to works but intellectual property scholars have carefully examined the incentives of their arguments and have pointed out that granting overly strong property rights to copyright holders might not be socially appropriate. Moreover, the network providers claim that they (the romantic builders) …

The Invention Of Traditional Knowledge, Madhavi Sunder Apr 2007

The Invention Of Traditional Knowledge, Madhavi Sunder

Law and Contemporary Problems

Sunder argues that the failure of intellectual property to recognize the contributions of traditional and natural sources cannot be rectified by mere payment and she posits a non-monetizable, non-utilitarian benefit in terms of worth or dignity in having one's contribution as the subject labelled of an intellectual property right. Foregrounding the important role of "raw materials" in the process of innovation, cultural environmentalism helped provide a theoretical and political basis for recognition and recompense for the purveyors of those raw materials-often indigenous peoples who have cultivated the earth's biodiversity and who hold "traditional knowledge" about that biodiversity. Moreover, focus on …

Biodefense Research Supporting The Dod: A New Strategic Vision, Coleen K. Martinez Colonel Apr 2007

Biodefense Research Supporting The Dod: A New Strategic Vision, Coleen K. Martinez Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author examines the productivity of the Department of Defense’s biodefense research program over the course of more than 35 years, coupled with changes in the global research environment since the events of September 11, 2001. Where the deployment of a biologic agent of mass destruction is largely an unpredictable risk, the outcome certainly could be catastrophic for an unprotected population. An urgent moral imperative is cast upon the federal government, then, to objectively assess the application and management of its biodefense research resources.

Russian-American Security Cooperation After St. Petersburg, Richard Weitz Dr. Apr 2007

Russian-American Security Cooperation After St. Petersburg, Richard Weitz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Until Russia and the United States experience a change on government in 2008, the prospects for additional strategic arms control agreements, limits on destabilizing military operations, and joint ballistic missile defense programs appear unlikely. Yet, near-term opportunities for collaboration in the areas of cooperative threat reduction, third-party proliferation, and bilateral military engagement do exist.

North Korea's Military Threat: Pyongyang's Conventional Forces, Weapons Of Mass Destruction, And Ballistic Missiles, Andrew Scobell Dr., John M. Sanford Captain Usn

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

North Korea's conventional capabilities have eroded but remain significant, including its sizeable contingent of special operations forces. Meanwhile, Pyongyang continues the vigorous development of its nuclear and missile programs, and has ongoing chemical and biological weapons programs. Perhaps the biggest unanswered questions concern North Korea’s military intentions. Does the Korean People’s Army have an offensive or defensive doctrine? Does Pyongyang intend to use its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles to replace the threat posed by its eroding conventional forces? Or is its intention to use conventional and unconventional forces in what it might view as a winning combination? …

A Multiscale Curvature Algorithm For Classifying Discrete Return Lidar In Forested Environments, Jeffrey S. Evans, Andrew T. Hudak Apr 2007

A Multiscale Curvature Algorithm For Classifying Discrete Return Lidar In Forested Environments, Jeffrey S. Evans, Andrew T. Hudak

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

One prerequisite to the use of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) across disciplines is differentiating ground from nonground returns. The objective was to automatically and objectively classify points within unclassified LiDAR point clouds, with few model parameters and minimal post-processing. Presented is an automated method for classifying LiDAR returns as ground or nonground in forested environments occurring in complex terrains. Multiscale curvature classification (MCC) is an iterative multiscale algorithm for classifying LiDAR returns that exceed positive surface curvature thresholds, resulting in all the LiDAR measurements being classified as ground or nonground. The MCC algorithm yields a solution of classified returns …

Subject matter experts on Fort Hood were consulted and helped determine which areas of the installation contained suitable GCW habitat but were not already included in The Nature Conservancy’s intensive study program. Researchers then surveyed one of these areas, documenting the presence of GCW. This research was conducted to determine if data collected in the intensive study area has been successfully extrapolated to other areas of habitat on the installation.

The collected data showed that the territory density was lower than those …

The Infected Cell Protein 0 Encoded By Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (Bicp0) Induces Degradation Of Interferon Response Factor 3 And, Consequently, Inhibits Beta Interferon Promoter Activity, Kazima Saira, You Zhou, Clinton J. Jones Apr 2007

The Infected Cell Protein 0 Encoded By Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (Bicp0) Induces Degradation Of Interferon Response Factor 3 And, Consequently, Inhibits Beta Interferon Promoter Activity, Kazima Saira, You Zhou, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The ICP0 protein (bICP0) encoded by bovine herpesvirus 1 is the major viral regulatory protein because it stimulates all viral promoters and, consequently, productive infection. Like other ICP0 analogues encoded by Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily members, bICP0 contains a zinc RING finger near its amino terminus that is necessary for activating transcription, regulating subcellular localization, and inhibiting interferon-dependent transcription. In this study, we discovered that sequences near the C terminus, and the zinc RING finger, are necessary for inhibiting the human beta interferon (IFN- β) promoter. In contrast to herpes simplex virus type 1-encoded ICP0, bICP0 reduces interferon response factor 3 (IRF3), …

Potential Of Agricultural Residues And Hay For Bioethanol Production, Ye Chen, Ratna R. Sharma-Shivappa, Deepak R. Keshwani, Chengci Chen

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Production of bioethanol from agricultural residues and hays (wheat, barley, and triticale straws, and barley, triticale, pearl millet, and sweet sorghum hays) through a series of chemical pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation processes was investigated in this study. Composition analysis suggested that the agricultural straws and hays studied contained approximately 28.62–38.58% glucan, 11.19–20.78% xylan, and 22.01–27.57% lignin, making them good candidates for bioethanol production. Chemical pretreatment with sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% indicated that concentration and treatment agent play a significant role during pretreatment. After 2.0% sulfuric acid pretreatment at 121°C/15 psi for …

Small Frogs Get Their Worms First: The Role Of Nonodonate Arthropods In The Recruitment Of Haematoloechus Coloradensis And Haematoloechus Complexus In Newly Metamorphosed Northern Leopard Frogs, Rana Pipiens, And Woodhouse's Toads, Bufo Woodhousii, Matthew G. Bolek, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Studies on the life cycles and epizootiology of North American frog lung flukes indicate that most species utilize odonates as second intermediate hosts; adult frogs become infected by ingesting odonate intermediate hosts. Newly metamorphosed frogs are rarely infected with these parasites, predominantly because they are gape-limited predators that cannot feed on large intermediate hosts such as dragonflies. We examined the role of the frog diet and potential intermediate hosts in the recruitment of the frog lung fluke, Haematoloechus coloradensis, to metamorphosed northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens), Woodhouse’s toads (Bufo woodhousii), and bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana …

An Introduction Into Proteomics And Its Clinical Applications, Mamoun Ahram Apr 2007

An Introduction Into Proteomics And Its Clinical Applications, Mamoun Ahram

Saudi Medical Journal

The completion of the human genome project has marked the official start of the post-genomic era. Due to limitations in DNA and RNA studies, the advent of proteomics, or large-scale analysis of proteins, is considered a crucial consequence and a chief player of post-genomic initiatives. An immediate goal of proteomic studies is the understanding of proteins including their expression, function, interaction, and structure with an endpoint of discovery of protein biomarkers. Such biomarkers can be used in detection, prognostication, and treatment of diseases. However, the challenge of studying complete sets of cellular proteins, or proteomes, is driving the development of …

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Of Paranasal Sinuses, Khalid Al-Sindi, Mohamed H. Al-Shehabi, Salman A. Al-Khalifa

Saudi Medical Journal

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors IMTs are clinico-pathologically distinctive but biologically controversial entities; they rarely affect the head and neck region and usually follow a benign clinical course after radical excision. We reviewed the literatures of IMTs and present a rare case of IMT arising from the maxillary paranasal sinus of an 11-year-old girl. Moreover, we elaborate on the morpho-immunophenotypic characteristics of this lesion. Microscopic examination revealed a spindle cell proliferation set in a highly vascular stroma with numerous inflammatory cells. Tumor cells were immunoreactive for vimentin, and smooth muscle actin, negative for desmin, S-100, p53, Cyclin D1, and bcl-2. The potential …
