Complexities Of Urban Coyote Management: Reaching The Unreachable, Teaching The Unteachable, And Touching The Untouchable, Robert H. Schmidt Apr 2007

Complexities Of Urban Coyote Management: Reaching The Unreachable, Teaching The Unteachable, And Touching The Untouchable, Robert H. Schmidt

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Urban coyote (Canis latrans) management is often complicated, but the technical portion of any management program is only one part of the equation. The use of lethal (traps, snares, shooting, toxicants) and non-lethal (exclusion, guard animals, husbandry practices, harassment) coyote management strategies can be successful, less than successful, or not successful depending on the appropriate match of technical skill and technology available in a particular situation. However, technical sophistication is only a portion of the management dilemma. Issues of policy, law, politics, and economics, as well as human values, attitudes, and ethics play an obvious and profound role …

Coyotebytes.Org: A New Educational Web Site, Robert M. Timm

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

A web site, www.CoyoteBytes.org, has been developed as a tool to provide sciencebased management recommendations to homeowners and municipal officials on methods to reduce conflicts with coyotes (Canis latrans) in urban and suburban areas. Such conflicts include aggression toward or attacks on children and adults; attacks on pet dogs and cats; attacks on hobby animals, such as poultry, sheep, and goats; and damage to drip irrigation systems, garden crops, and to other resources. In addition to providing information, the website allows individuals to upload photos or video clips of urban and suburban coyotes, and to submit firsthand reports …

Renewable Energy Technologies: A Promising Energy Alternative, Ursula Kazarian Apr 2007

Renewable Energy Technologies: A Promising Energy Alternative, Ursula Kazarian

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Creating legal instruments that incorporate renewable energy policy interests is a complex, but not insurmountable, challenge. Renewable energy technologies (“RETs”) provide clean, safe, and lasting energy supplies. The finite nature of hydrocarbon fuels, the controversy surrounding carbon sequestration, the debate over “clean coal,” and the safety and waste management concerns regarding nuclear energy have resulted in RETs emerging as promising alternatives. Successful examples of the implementation of RETs demonstrate the importance of integrating this technology into local, national, and international legislation.

The Dwarfing Of Men In Victorian Fairy-Tale Literature, Heather Victoria Vermeulen Apr 2007

The Dwarfing Of Men In Victorian Fairy-Tale Literature, Heather Victoria Vermeulen

Honors Theses

As Jack Zipes explains in his preface to Victorian Fairy Tales: The Revolt of the Fairies and the Elves, "The Victorian fairy-tale writers always had two ideal audiences in mind when they composed their tales -young middle-class readers whose minds and morals they wanted to influence, and adult middle-class readers whose ideas they wanted to challenge and reform" (xiv). "It was through the fairy tale," he continues, "that a social discourse about conditions in Victorian England took form, and this discourse is not without interest for readers today" (xi). My project begins with a critical analysis of the Grimm Brothers' …

Rna Gene Finding With Biased Mutation Operators, Jennifer A. Smith Apr 2007

Rna Gene Finding With Biased Mutation Operators, Jennifer A. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of genetic algorithms for non-coding RNA gene finding has previously been investigated and found to be a potentially viable method for accelerating covariance-model-based database search relative to full dynamic-programming methods. The mutation operators in previous work chose new alignment insertion and deletion locations uniformly over the length of the model consensus sequence. Since the covariance models are estimated from multiple known members of a non-coding RNA family, information is available as to the likelihood of insertions or deletions at the individual model positions. This information is implicit in the state-transition parameters of the estimated covariance models. In the …

The Myth Of Factual Innocence, Morris B. Hoffman Apr 2007

The Myth Of Factual Innocence, Morris B. Hoffman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The movie 12 Angry Men is part of a larger American myth about the frequency of wrongful criminal convictions. This essay examines the broader contours of that myth, including its most recent incarnation in the form of innocence projects, suggests more realistic upper and lower bounds for the real wrongful conviction rate, and argues that exaggerations about the frequency of wrongful convictions threaten to become self-fulfilling.

The German Response To 12 Angry Men, Stefan Machura Apr 2007

The German Response To 12 Angry Men, Stefan Machura

Chicago-Kent Law Review

12 Angry Men was well received by the German audience. It would be hard to find a German equivalent, since Germany is not a jury country. However, writer Bodo Kirchhoff and director Niki Stein created a film along the lines of 12 Angry Men. The TV film Die Konferenz (2004) depicts the deliberation of a teachers' conference on the fate of a young man accused of raping a fellow student. Like 12 Angry Men, Die Konferenz addresses key social problems of its time. The main topic is gender relations. Tellingly, Die Konferenz has no dominant hero like Henry …

Fathers In Law: Violence And Reason In 12 Angry Men, Austin Sarat Apr 2007

Fathers In Law: Violence And Reason In 12 Angry Men, Austin Sarat

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this article I argue that 12 Angry Men is as much a film about fatherhood and law as about juries and civic virtue. It is a powerful presentation of sons subject to paternal brutality, of fathers tormented by their sons, and of the very real possibility of sons murdering their brutal fathers. This film thus deploys complex images of fatherhood as a site and source of violence and anger. By presenting those images it reminds us of law's own complex relationship to reason and violence.

Fabrication And Compressive Behavior Of Corrugated Aramid-Epoxy Cellular Solids, Jeffrey Arthur Schneider Apr 2007

Fabrication And Compressive Behavior Of Corrugated Aramid-Epoxy Cellular Solids, Jeffrey Arthur Schneider

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Cellular solids are materials whose base material does not always occupy the entire solid fraction available. A number of cellular solids can provide blast protection and absorb impact energy, but few perform well resisting blunt object (ballistic) penetration. In this thesis, a method is proposed for fabricating cellular solids from aramid-epoxy composites that can absorb impact energy and resist blunt object penetration. The aramid-epoxy samples were fabricated using wet-layup techniques, with two different styles of Kevlar 49 woven fabric in a variety of orientations. Test sample density ranged from 0.08 0.23 g/cm3. Different lamination orientations, assembly techniques, and bonding adhesives …

The State Of The Art In Evaluating The Performance Of Department Chairs And Division Heads., David G. Dunning, Timothy M. Durham, Mert N. Aksu, Brian M. Lange

Journal Articles: College of Dentistry

This study explores the little understood process of evaluating the performance of department chairs/division heads in dental schools. Specifically, this research aimed to elucidate the methods, processes, and outcomes related to the job performance of department chairs/division heads. Forty-three deans and 306 chairs completed surveys with both close-ended and open-ended questions. In addition, ten deans and ten chairs were interviewed. Results indicate that 80 to 90 percent of department chairs are formally evaluated, although as many as 50 percent may lack job descriptions. Recommended best practices for performance appraisal--such as having at least yearly appraisals, holding face-to-face meetings, and setting …

Institutional Repositories And The Principle Of Open Access: Changing The Way We Think About Legal Scholarship, Carol A. Parker

New Mexico Law Review

Open access to scholarship, that is, making scholarship freely available to the public via the Internet without subscription or access fees, is a natural fit for legal scholarship given our tradition of making government and legal information available to citizens, and the many benefits that flow from freely disseminating information for its own sake. Law schools, journals and scholars should espouse the principle of open access to legal scholarship, not only for the public good, but also for the enhanced visibility it provides journals and authors. Open access can be accomplished by archiving digital works in online institutional repositories. Legal …
