Molecular methods for rapid detection and differentiation of serogroups(A, B, D and Untypeables)of Pasteurella muliocida (PM) isolated from 1996 to 2004 in Malaysia were studied. A total of 125 strains were isolated from different domestic animal species (cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats), avian species (chickens, ducks and turkeys) and wild animals such as deer, tigers, orang-utan (primates, Pangopygmaeus) and marmosets. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) serotyping was 100% species-specific, more robust, accurate and highly specific in differentiating serogroups of P. multocida. All the P. multocida strains exhibited drug resistance against triple-sulfonamides and streptomycin and were sensitive to …

Preliminary Investigations Of The Endoparasite Component Communities Of Stray Cats From Kuala Lumpur, S.A.A. Syed-Khalil, S.N. Mohd Zain

Investigations into the endoparasite fauna of stray cats from Kuala Lumpur were carried out to determine the present population and diversity. Post-mortem examinations of selected organ from 85 cats revealed that 87.1% cats harbored endoparasites, with an average of 36.65 worms per infected cat. Endoparasite recovered consists of five nematode species (Toxocara catti, Toxocara malayensis, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Ancylostoma braziiiensie and Strongyloides sp.), two cestode species (Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaformis) and one trematode species (Platynosomum fastosum). Toxocara sp. was shown to have the highest prevalence and mean intensity values. Present observations provided additional insights to the environment, behavior and diet …

Against Expediency: The Ethics Of Education, Gerard Mannion

This article suggests that church-linked universities and colleges can and should show that there is an alternative to the expediency and pseudo-utilitarian thinking which currently dominates higher education. Such institutions can and should serve as beacons of a virtuous approach to education which can show others a more positive way forward. Theology and ethics”both disciplines mutually informing the other”hold the key to fostering and promoting a true culture of ministry both in the day-to-day existence of universities and colleges and in nurturing young minds to take that culture of ministry out into the wider community.

Pneumococcal adherence to surface mucosa of human lung nasopharynx is the first step before progression to colonization and invasion leading to pneumococcal diseases. This study was undertaken to evaluate the adherence capacities of two clinically important serotypes (23-valent Pneumovax vaccine types) of pneumococci at different states of growth to human lung epithelial cells (in vitro).

In order for saving constrained resources and preservation of environment, natural gas has been found as a proven low cost and low emission alternative fuel to petroleum fuels for all types of motor vehicles. It is being widely used throughout the globe. In Malaysia, still millions of vehicles are plying on use of petroleum fuels. These fuels release huge anti-body and anti-environment gases to the environment. Definitely, this adversely affects the natural ecosystem.
