Genomic And Expression Analysis Of Multiple Sry Loci From A Single Rattus Norvegicus Y Chromosome, Monte E. Turner, Carey Martin, Almir S. Martins, Jeffrey Dunmire, Joel Farkas, Daniel L. Ely, Amy Milsted Apr 2007

Genomic And Expression Analysis Of Multiple Sry Loci From A Single Rattus Norvegicus Y Chromosome, Monte E. Turner, Carey Martin, Almir S. Martins, Jeffrey Dunmire, Joel Farkas, Daniel L. Ely, Amy Milsted

Biology Faculty Research

Background: Sry is a gene known to be essential for testis determination but is also transcribed in adult male tissues. The laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus, has multiple Y chromosome copies of Sry while most mammals have only a single copy. DNA sequence comparisons with other rodents with multiple Sry copies are inconsistent in divergence patterns and functionality of the multiple copies. To address hypotheses of divergence, gene conversion and functional constraints, we sequenced Sry loci from a single R. norvegicus Y chromosome from the Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat strain (SHR) and analyzed DNA sequences for homology among copies. Next, to determine …

The Successful Eradication Of Introduced Roof Rats (Rattus Rattus) From Buck Island Using Diphacinone, Followed By An Irruption Of House Mice (Mus Musculus), Gary W. Witmer, Frank Boyd, Zandy Hillis-Starr Apr 2007

The Successful Eradication Of Introduced Roof Rats (Rattus Rattus) From Buck Island Using Diphacinone, Followed By An Irruption Of House Mice (Mus Musculus), Gary W. Witmer, Frank Boyd, Zandy Hillis-Starr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The United States National Park Service and the United States Wildlife Services made a planned and sustained effort to eradicate the introduced roof rats (Rattus rattus) from Buck Island Reef National Monument in the Caribbean Sea during 1998–2000. The rats were causing substantial damage to a variety of the 80-ha island’s floral and faunal resources. An island-wide grid of elevated bait stations containing anticoagulant (0.005% diphacinone; 50 ppm) rodenticide bait blocks were used to eradicate the rats. The bait stations were modified several times to assure ready access by rats while minimizing access by non-target animals, especially crabs …

The Deleterious Effects Of Bed Rest On Human Skeletal Muscle Fibers Are Exacerbated By Hypercortisolemia And Ameliorated By Dietary Supplementation, Robert H. Fitts, Janell Romatowski, Jim R. Peters, D. Paddon-Jones, R. R. Wolfe, A. A. Ferrando

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Prolonged inactivity associated with bed rest in a clinical setting or spaceflight is frequently associated with hypercortisolemia and inadequate caloric intake. Here, we determined the effect of 28 days of bed rest (BR); bed rest plus hypercortisolemia (BRHC); and bed rest plus essential amino acid (AA) and carbohydrate (CHO) supplement (BRAA) on the size and function of single slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers. Supplementing meals, the BRAA group consumed 16.5 g essential amino acids and 30 g sucrose at 1100, 1600, and 2100 h, and the BRHC subjects received 5 daily doses of 10–15 mg of oral hydrocortisone sodium succinate …

Use Of Implanted Radiotransmitters To Estimate Survival Of Greater Sage-Grouse Chicks, Michael A. Gregg, Mike R. Dunbar, John A. Crawford Apr 2007

Use Of Implanted Radiotransmitters To Estimate Survival Of Greater Sage-Grouse Chicks, Michael A. Gregg, Mike R. Dunbar, John A. Crawford

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Reduced chick survival has been implicated in declines of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations. Because monitoring survival of unmarked sage-grouse chicks is difficult, radiotelemetry may be an effective technique to estimate survival rates, identify causes of mortality, and collect ecological data. Previous studies have used subcutaneous implants to attach radiotransmitters to hatchlings of several species of birds with precocial young. Previous researchers who used subcutaneous implants in free-ranging populations removed chicks from the capture location and implanted transmitters at an alternate site. Because logistics precluded removing newly hatched greater sagegrouse chicks from the field, we evaluated a method for implanting …

Observer Bias In Anuran Call Surveys, Aaron Lotz, Craig R. Allen Apr 2007

Observer Bias In Anuran Call Surveys, Aaron Lotz, Craig R. Allen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Amphibian monitoring programs rarely question the quality of data obtained by observers and often ignore observer bias. In order to test for bias in amphibian call surveys, we sampled 29 clusters of wetlands from the Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, USA, totaling 228 functionally connected wetlands. Sampling consisted of 3-minute stops where volunteers recorded species heard and made digital recordings. Based on 627 samples, we examined 3 types of observer bias: omission, false inclusion (commission), and incorrect identification. Misidentification rates ranged from 4.2% to 18.3%. Relatively high and unquantified error rates can negatively affect the ability of monitoring programs to accurately detect …

Evolution And Medicine: The Long Reach Of "Dr. Darwin", Niall Shanks, Rebecca A. Pyles Apr 2007

Evolution And Medicine: The Long Reach Of "Dr. Darwin", Niall Shanks, Rebecca A. Pyles

ETSU Faculty Works

In this review we consider the new science of Darwinian medicine. While it has often been said that evolutionary theory is the glue that holds the disparate branches of biological inquiry together and gives them direction and purpose, the links to biomedical inquiry have only recently been articulated in a coherent manner. Our aim in this review is to make clear first of all, how evolutionary theory is relevant to medicine; and secondly, how the biomedical sciences have enriched our understanding of evolutionary processes. We will conclude our review with some observations of the philosophical significance of this interplay between …

Candidate Sex Pheromones Of The New World Screwworm Cochliomyia Hominivorax -- Summary & Abstract, David Carlson, Dennis Berkebile, Steven Skoda, S Russell Mihok Apr 2007

Candidate Sex Pheromones Of The New World Screwworm Cochliomyia Hominivorax -- Summary & Abstract, David Carlson, Dennis Berkebile, Steven Skoda, S Russell Mihok

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Females in established colonies of screwworm flies eventually lose the ability to make sex stimulant pheromone. This fact could result in the poor mating success observed during large sterile insect technique projects, such as the current Screwworm eradication program in Jamaica. Scientists at the Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology in Gainesville, Florida were sought out by the International Atomic Energy Agency to test for and identify the sex pheromone in colonized Screwworm flies. Six chemical structures from previously published works were selected and all five new compounds were synthesized. Tests were conducted on colony screwworm flies from USDA, …
